Elmira Over Oswego 5-2

0
Oswego, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team was downed 5-2 by the nationally-ranked Elmira College Soaring Eagles on Friday night in the Campus Center. Oswego’s loss drops its record to 10-5-1 on the year and 6-2-1 in ECAC West play, while No. 3 Elmira improves to 12-3-1, 7-0-0.

Statistically, the two teams were similar, with the Soaring Eagles only holding a one-shot advantage over the Lakers (27-26) while Oswego controlled three more face-offs (31-28) than Elmira.

Despite the likeness in the box score, Elmira jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the game’s first 23 minutes. Phoebe Piku’s goal at 3:11 in the second period proved to be the game-winner, although Oswego would fight back.

Kendall Appelbaum got the Lakers on the board in the second period when she netted a goal at18:16 off a pass from Emma Smetaniuk. The goal cut the Soaring Eagle lead to two at 3-1 heading into the final intermission.

Elmira scored exactly one minute into the third period but Jocelyn St. Clair answered back 49 second later to keep it a two-goal margin at 4-2. The goal by St. Clair was assisted by Lizzy Marks. Just under two minutes later, however, the Soaring Eagles added the final score of the contest.

Catherine Cote earned the start between the pipes for the Lakers, saving 22 attempts in the losing effort.

Oswego will return to the ice at 3 p.m. on Saturday when it looks to avenge Friday’s loss when it faces the Soaring Eagles to close out the weekend series.

Colgate Win Makes It Six in a Row

HAMILTON – Rookie Andrew Black broke a 2-2 tie late in the third period to lift the Raiders over 13th-ranked Clarkson, 3-2, on Friday night.

Colgate (12-9-3, 8-3-1 ECAC) continued its winning ways in 2014 and moved to 5-0-1 on the new year. Black added an assist as well for his first two-point night of his career. Tylor Spink tallied his 10th of the year to join Darcy Murphy in double digits. Joe Wilson got the scoring started in the first with his third of the season. Charlie Finn moved to 9-4-2 on the year and is 7-1-1 in league player this year.

Clarkson (15-8-2, 8-3-0 ECAC) got goals from Paul Geiger and Will Frederick. Frederick was the team’s high point scorer with two after getting an assist on Geiger’s tally. Steve Perry got the start in net and made 25 saves with 11 coming in the second period.

“I thought it was a heck of a game,” head coach Don Vaughan said. “A point separates us in the standings and you can see why as both teams play a similar style. It was up and down and a heck of game to be a part of. “

The Raiders took the early lead with Wilson scoring on a crazy bounce off the back boards. Andrew Black forced a turnover at center ice and put the puck in the zone. It popped out off the boards to Wilson, who was in the slot and wide open. He buried it top shelf for the first lead of the game with 15:43 left in the first.

Colgate then capitalized on its first power play of the game with great puck movement from the Cornwall power play. Tyson Spink was in the right corner and slipped a backhanded pass out to Kyle Baun at the faceoff dot. Baun tthen found Tylor Spink at the opposite circle. He smoked a one-timer that beat a diving Perry for the 2-0 lead with 7:37 remaining in the opening frame.

Vaughan was happy with the early results and effort.

“We had great energy early and the power play goal was a special goal,” Vaughan said. “Those guys move the puck so well and know where each other are at all times. We had a good jump early and we have had that recently. We talk a lot about getting off to good starts and we did yet again tonight against a very good team.”

The Golden Knights fired back with a pair of scores in the second period to tie the game. The first came on the power play midway through the frame. Geiger simply fired a wrister from the high slot that went through traffic and into the net to make it 2-1.

Clarkson tied the game with Frederick scoring on a rush up ice. Jarrett Burton got the puck into the zone and took it deep to almost the goal line and dropped a pass back to Frederick and the senior beat Finn to the glove side. The goal was a 4-on-4 score and came with 12 seconds left in the middle stanza.

With the Golden Knights tying the game in the second period, the Raiders and coach Vaughan didn’t panic and preached supporting the puck and not turning it over in the dressing room in between periods

“We talked about taking care of the puck, especially when we got the lead,” Vaughan said. “Andrew Black’s shot was phenomenal, but once we got the lead it was all about not turning the puck over in the gray areas and having great puck management. I thought our bench did a good job not letting Clarkson’s guys get behind us as they were stretching.”

Black gave the Raiders the 3-2 lead with a snipe from the right side. Kevin Lough broke up a play in the defensive zone and Black swooped in and rushed the length of the ice. He faked the slapper and roofed a wrister just under the cross bar for the eventual gamewinner.

“He has had some great looks and he is going to create because he has speed and handles the puck well,” Vaughan said. “I have seen him score that goal before in practice and he had one very similar to this one earlier this year. That type of goal is in his arsenal and it was a great individual effort.”

Both teams were 1-for-4 on the power play and Clarkson had a slim 29-28 lead in shots.

The Raiders played in front of the Colgate students for the first time in over a month and Vaughan was appreciative of the support.

“It was a great crowd tonight and I want to tip my hat to them and it was great to have the students in the building,” Vaughan said. “The energy was great and one of the best crowds we have had here in a while and I hope they come out tomorrow night.”

Colgate is back on the ice tomorrow night against St. Lawrence at 7 p.m. with tickets still available. The Colgate Ticket Office will be open during the women’s basketball game tomorrow at 4 p.m. and fans can buy tickets then and also an hour before the men’s hockey game.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (January 23, 2014) — HARBORCENTER VP and Director of the Academy of HockeyKevyn Adams today announced that Marty Biron has joined the Academy of Hockey coaching staff, and will serve as it’s Director of Goaltending.

“Marty Biron has had success at every level of hockey,” Adams said.  “He was a first round pick in the NHL, fostered that talent through a tremendous work ethic, and over many years developed an understanding of hockey that’s second to none.  With the benefit of all of his accomplishments, Marty is well-positioned to provide world class instruction that will make the HARBORCENTER Academy of Hockey a destination for goaltenders.”

Biron has been connected to Buffalo for almost 20 years.  He was selected by the Sabres in the first round of the 1995 draft and made his debut that same season, at the age of 18.  Biron went on to spend parts of nine seasons in blue and gold, and currently ranks fourth in franchise history with 300 games played.  Biron posted a 134-115-37 record with the Sabres, with a 2.53 goals against average and .909 save percentage.  In 2007, he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers and led the team to the 2008 Eastern Conference Finals.  Following his time in Philadelphia, Biron went on to join the Islanders and Rangers, retiring from the NHL on October 20th of last year, almost 19 years after playing his first NHL game.  In all, Biron played in 508 NHL games and compiled a record of 230-191-80.

“I want to help improve and develop goaltenders at all levels at the Academy of Hockey,” Biron said.  “As a father of four, I am very passionate about youth hockey development and am excited to work with young players.  I’m equally eager to help goaltenders at the junior and professional levels to advance their game to an elite level.  I am very excited to return to Buffalo and give back to the people and community who were so supportive throughout my career.”

As the Academy of Hockey’s Director of Goaltending, Biron will work to create an innovative approach to coaching that position.  He will help shape and implement all goaltending aspects of the Academy of Hockey.  Biron will work to form programs, create specialized instruction plans and drills, and aid in The Academy’s advanced use of video.  Biron will develop the Academy of Hockey’s goaltending philosophy, and formulate both in-season and offseason goaltending development programs.

“With Marty and Adam Mair now on my staff, we make all the more clear our commitment to provide best-in-class teaching and a differentiating experience for every player and coach that visits HARBORCENTER”, Adams noted.  “And in the months ahead, we look forward to rounding out our coaching team with other well-qualified and highly-credentialed coaches at all levels”.

The HARBORCENTER Academy of Hockey is dedicated to being the premier development destination for hockey players and coaches.  The Academy will provide development programs, premier training both on and off the ice, plus skill-specific lectures and private classes to make for a unique and differentiating experience for hockey players and coaches.

Canisius Falls to Mercyhurst

0

After the Canisius College hockey team took a 1-0 lead with just 3:23 remaining in regulation, Mercyhurst scored three unanswered goals in the final 2:51 to stun the Griffs for a 3-1 victory. The loss drops Canisius to 8-13-2 on the season and 7-7-2 in Atlantic Hockey play, while the Lakers improve to 14-9-4 and 12-1-3 against league foes.

The schools played a scoreless first 56 minutes of the game before Canisius grabbed the lead with a tally by senior Kyle Gibbons (Westlake, Ohio). From down low on the power play, junior Cody Freeman (Toronto, Ontario) found Gibbons open in the opposite face-off circle and the senior buried his chance with an open look for the 1-0 lead with just 3:23 left in the game. Sophomore Ralph Cuddemi (Concord, Ontario) also recorded an assist on Gibbons’ 10th goal of the season and his sixth power-play tally.

However, the Lakers quickly responded. Just 32 seconds later, Matthew Zay’s shot from the blue line hit a stick in front and deflected into the back of the net to tie the contest at one with 2:51 remaining. Daniel Bahntge then finished a chance from the low slot off a pass from behind the net with just 57 seconds remaining for the 2-1 Mercyhurst advantage.

The Lakers then sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with just 18 seconds left in the game.

Mercyhurst owned a 40-30 advantage in shots on the night, including a 17-5 edge in the third period. Canisius was 1-for-4 on the power play, while killing all four Lakers extra-man chances.

Senior Tony Capobianco (Mississauga, Ontario) was strong in net for the Griffs with 37 saves, including a number of stops on 1-on-1 breaks. Jimmy Sarjeant recorded 29 saves to earn the win for the Lakers.

The schools wrap up the season series on Saturday in Erie, Pa. with game time slated for 7:05 p.m.

Game Notes: Canisius is now just 8-6-2 this season in games when it holds a lead, including a 4-6-2 record when it scores first … Canisius fired 18 shots in the second period, the most for the Griffs in any period this season (topping the previous standard of 17) … Capobianco lost in conference play for the first time since Nov. 8, ending a six-game unbeaten streak … Canisius is the only team to hand Mercyhurst a loss in conference play this season, earning a 4-3 win on Nov. 9 … The Lakers’ win ended a six-game winning streak by the home team in the series … The Griffs have never played to a 0-0 tie in school history.

Colgate Hot in 2014; Host Clarkson Friday/St. Lawrence Saturday

0

HAMILTON – This has been one of the most enjoyable and fun years for Colgate men’s hockey head coach Don Vaughan.

The Raiders have been on a tear lately, going unbeaten since the turn of the new year with a 4-0-1 record, including their second-straight league weekend sweep at Dartmouth and Harvard. Colgate went a while without getting two ECAC Hockey wins in a weekend and they now have four-straight with each win coming on the road.

The road success has been quite a surprise for a team that features 17 sophomores and rookies. Colgate is 7-2-3 away from Starr Rink and is unbeaten in its last seven games away from Hamilton. They have scored two or more goals in all five games, which included putting four goals on Dartmouth and Harvard last weekend.

It is always hard to win on the road in league and coach Vaughan credits his team’s leadership for the success so far this season.

“I believe some of the success this year has a lot to do with great leadership from our captains Spiro Goulakos and Joe Wilson,” Vaughan said. “Those two, combined with a big sophomore class that gained a lot of experience last year as freshmen in learning how consistent the effort must be to win on the road. I also believe we have good depth and a group of guys who have bought into their roles. Of course we have had some great goaltending and timely saves as well. “

Rookie Charlie Finn has been impressive as of late with a 4-0-1 record and over the last five he has a 1.38 goals against average and a .947 save percentage. Finn has allowed seven goals in the five games and has not allowed more than two goals during the recent win streak. He has dropped his GAA from 3.27 to 2.57 over the past five games.

“Charlie was one of the best Tier 2 Junior A goalies in Canada two years running,” Vaughan said. “We knew what we had. Like any player there is an adjustment period coming from junior or prep school. Charlie had to get use to the pace of the game and how quick guys release the puck on shots.”

“It’s good for us that he is a quick study. He is doing now exactly what we expected of him and then some.”

The top six scorers for the Raiders are sophomores after Ryan Johnston tallied three points last weekend with a goal and an assist. All six skaters have 10 or more points and are led by Mike Borkowski, who is having a breakout year with 20 points on seven goals and 13 assists.

“The sophomores are a very talented group that saw a lot of playing time as freshmen in all situations,” Vaughan said. “In many programs it takes until junior year to gain that experience but for us with a relatively small roster compared to other schools our freshman play. Their talent level and experience gained last year helped them get off to a good start this year.”

It is not just the sophomore class making contributions. The Raiders have been able to roll four lines for most of the season and recently the fourth line has stepped in to provide a major role in the recent winning ways.

“It’s great to be able to roll four lines and its something we always want to do,” Vaughan. “For example the so called fourth line who are perhaps more of a checking line might be exactly what we need some nights to win. They can quickly become the first line on a night like that. It’s about depth and balance in terms of role definition and if you look at all of the great teams we have had at Colgate you will find this quality.”

The defense has been exceptional over the last nine games, allowing only 1.7 goals per game, which is well below the season average. The Raiders have played great defense and have not given up a lead in the final period. They are 9-0-3 when tied or ahead after the second period. The Raiders are also 7-2-1 when scoring first this season.

Vaughan has brought up many times that he really enjoys coaching this team.

“They are such a low maintenance team because there is just a great combination of talent and personalities in our locker room,” Vaughan said. “This group is all about team first and they really care about each other. Perhaps it’s the youth but I can’t remember a team that wants to learn and work at improving as much as this group. Coaching is what Brad, Jason, Mike and I love and with this group it’s a joy to come to the rink every day.”

The Raiders are still on the outside of the rankings, but look to continue their momentum this weekend with No. 13 Clarkson and St. Lawrence. Friday night’s game will be live on Time Warner Cable Sports Channel in Central New York (Channel 55 in Hamilton). Both games are going to be on the Patriot League Network online and tickets are still available by calling the Colgate Ticket Office at 315-228-7600.

Friday night is also a white out, so fans are encouraged to wear white to the game in support of the Raiders. The first 100 fans will receive a free t-shirt.

SCOUTING THE GRIFFS
• Canisius (8-12-2, 7-6-2 AHA) took one point from a series with Bentley last weekend, losing 4-1 and playing to a 2-2 tie.
• Kyle Gibbons leads the Griffs with 20 points and nine goals. Gibbons and defender Ben Danford are tied for the team lead with 11 assists.
• Senior Tony Capobianco (3.21 gaa, .906 sv pct.) and junior Keegan Asmundson (2.43 gaa, .932 sv pct.) have split time in goal this year.

WISEMAN SCORES A SCHOOL RECORD
• Junior Tyler Wiseman is always a threat to score, especially when the team is short-handed.
• Wiseman is tied for the national lead with three short-handed goals this season (one of eight players in the country). His three man-down tallies are also tied for the most in the program’s Division I history.
• Overall, Wiseman has six points and four goals this season.

TWO GREAT GOALTENDING OPTIONS
• When first looking at the Griffs’ goaltenders, one might see a drop off in performance from last season. However, that isn’t necessarily the case.
• After a slow start, Tony Capobianco has rebounded to his 2012-13 form. The senior has not lost a conference game since Nov. 8 and is 4-0-2 with a 2.20 gaa and .930 save percentage in his last seven starts.
• Junior Keegan Asmundson has also provided the Griffs with a spark. In six league games, Asmundson owns a 1.90 goals against average and .940 save percentage with a 3-3-0 record.

GIBBONS LISTED ON HOBEY BAKER BALLOT

THIS WEEK: CLARKSON & ST. LAWRENCE AT HOME
The Raiders are back on home ice this weekend with a visit from No. 13 Clarkson and St. Lawrence. The Golden Knights had struggled a bit since the beginning of December, but they are coming off a weekend sweep of Yale and Brown at home. St. Lawrence has hit on hard times with seven-straight losses, including being swept by the Bulldogs and Bears last weekend.

NEXT UP: LEAGUE SLATE CONTINUES ON THE ROAD
Colgate is back on the road next weekend with a trip to Brown and Yale. The Bears have been a hot team as of late with a 4-1-2 mark over the last seven games. The lone loss was against Clarkson in a 3-2 loss last Saturday. Yale has been on the identical streak with a 4-1-2 record in the last seven. They also lost 3-2 to Clarkson, but on Friday.

ANOTHER ROAD SWEEP
Colgate had struggled recently on the road in league contests, but the Raiders have turned that around with two-straight ECAC Hockey road sweeps. Colgate has been impressive on the road in league with a 5-1-1 mark away from Starr Rink.

ROAD WARRIORS
Colgate has been a great team away from Starr Rink with a 7-2-3 mark on the road. The Raiders are unbeaten in their last seven games away from Hamilton. They have scored two or more goals in all five games, which included putting four goals on Dartmouth and Harvard last weekend.

THE PUCK STOPS HERE
Charlie Finn has been impressive as of late with a 4-0-1 record and over the last five he has a 1.38 goals against average and a .947 save percentage. Finn has allowed seven goals in the five games and has not allowed more than two goals during the recent win streak. He has dropped his GAA from 3.27 to 2.57 over the past five games.

JOHNSTON JUMPS UP
Sophomore Ryan Johnston had a great weekend at Dartmouth and Harvard with two goals and an assist and has 10 points overall to lead all defenseman. He has three goals and seven assists this season and his 10 points is a career high. He started 2014 out great with the shootout goal that beat No. 1 Minnesota and has five points in his last six games. He is riding a career long three-game point streak.

DOMINATING CLASS
After leading the team in total points last season, the sophomore class has been putting the goals and assists on the board once again. The Class of 2016 has recorded 98 points out of the 165 scored this season, which is 59 percent of the scoring output. They have scored 41 of the 61 goals this year and all top six scorers for Colgate are sophomores. All seven sophomore skaters have tallied points this season. The sophomores scores four of the eight goals last weekend with Ryan Johnston getting two of the four.

GOAL SCORER’S TOUCH
Darcy Murphy has emerged as a great goal scorer for the Raiders and leads the team with 11 on the year. He has already eclipsed his goal output from a season ago. Murphy has scored goals since arriving on campus as he has 30 career points with 21 goals and nine assists. He has six goals in his last 11 games with two coming on the power play.

POWERING UP THE POWER PLAY
Colgate has struggled on the power play this season, but the Raiders saw some improvement over the last four games with six goals with the extra man on 20 chances. The Raiders are still at the bottom of the league in power play efficiency at 14.4 percent. Colgate scored twice on the man advantage to defeat Dartmouth by a 4-1 tally, but couldn’t find the net against Harvard.

TEAM DEFENSE
The Raiders have buckled down recently on the defensive end allowing only 1.7 goals per game in their last nine games. The defense was a major reason for the Maricucci Classic win as Colgate held two of the top scoring teams in the nation to just two goals in two games. The Raiders have played great defense with a lead in the third period as they are 9-0-3 being tied or ahead after the second period. The Raiders are also 7-2-1 when scoring first this season.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
Clarkson has won three of its last four and is ranked 13th in the nation. After wins over Yale and Brown last weekend the Golden Knights improved their record to 15-7-2 and 8-2-0 in the conference.

The Golden Knights are paced offensively by Ben Sexton and Allan McPherson. Sexton leads the team with 19 points from five goals and a team-high 14 assists. McPherson is just a step behind at 18 points from a team-best eight goals, including three game-winners, to go along with 10 assists. Clarkson has also gotten strong contributions from Jeff DiNallo, who has 14 points on seven goals and seven assists, and Joe Zarbo, who has scored five goals, including three game-winners, and eight assists for 13 points.

Ten different players have scored for Clarkson on the power play, with Sexton’s four advantage goals leading the pack. As a whole, the Golden Knights are scoring on 20 percent of their power plays, with 19 goals in 95 advantages. Their penalty kill, however, has not been as effective; opponents have cashed in on 22 of Clarkson’s 100 penalties.

While sophomore Greg Lewis has seen the majority of the time as the team’s goaltender this season, Clarkson has turned to freshman Steve Perry more of late. Perry has started four of the Golden Knights’ last six games, and for the season is posting a .919 save percentage and 2.02 goals against average over 11 games, 10 of those starts. His record is 6-3-2. Meanwhile, Lewis sports an 8-4 record in 13 starts while owning a .895 save percentage and 2.60 goals against average.

SERIES HISTORY
These two long-time hockey schools are playing for the 146th time since Colgate and Clarkson met back in 1927-28. Clarkson has an 81-48-16 advantage in the series. The Raiders have put a dent in the series by going unbeaten in 14 of the last 17 games, including a three-game unbeaten streak. Colgate came from behind up in Potsdam earlier this season with three goals in the final period to earn a 4-3 win on Nov. 16.

SCOUTING THE SAINTS
A once-promising season for St. Lawrence has collapsed, as the Saints have lost seven in a row and 10 of 12 to fall to 8-12-2. St. Lawrence has not won a game in nearly two months; their last victory was a 5-2 triumph at North Dakota on November 29.

The Saints’ main issue has come on the defensive end, as St. Lawrence gives up a whopping 3.8 goals per game. With 18 starts and 951:20 minutes in net, Matt Weninger has spent the majority of the season as the team’s goaltender. He has surrendered 60 goals against 377 stops, a save percentage of .863, while posting a 3.78 goals against average.

Despite their defensive shortcomings, St. Lawrence has put up some prolific offensive numbers. The Carey brothers have a whopping 67 points between them, with Greg contributing 40 to the cause from 14 goals and 26 assists and Mike putting up 14 goals, including eight on the power play, and 13 assists for 27 points. Jeremy Wick has scored 11 goals, with a team-best nine on the power play, to go along with 11 assists for 22 points. Meanwhile, Justin Baker and Gavin Bayreuther have each scored five goals, with the former dishing out 15 assists for 20 points and the later tallying 14 helpers for 19 points. St. Lawrence also has three other players with double-digit points.

With Wick and freshman Matt Carey, the Saints’ power play has been especially lethal, scoring on 30.2 percent of their advantages from 32 goals in 106 opportunities. However, like their five-on-five defensive issues, their penalty kill unit has also struggled, allowing 29 power play goals in 106 chances, killing off only 72.6 percent of their penalties.

SERIES HISTORY
These two upstate New York schools will be playing for the 144th time since Colgate and St. Lawrence met back in 1927-28. The series is just about even with the Saints holding a 75-64-4 advantage. The Raiders halted a five-game unbeaten streak by the Saints in November with a 5-3 win at Appleton Arena. Colgate has a 39-28-9 advantage at home and Coach Vaughan is 22-30-3 against his alma mater.
