Canisius/Bentley Game One: Bentley Victorious

0

Bentley used three power-play goals to go along with an empty-net tally in a 4-1 victory against the Canisius College hockey team on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Griffs to 8-12-1 and 7-6-1 against Atlantic Hockey foes, while the Falcons improve to 12-8-2 and 10-3-2 in league play.

“We knew coming into the weekend that Bentley was a great transition and power-play team and we weren’t able to stop them today,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. “We had decent energy and we did a good job early taking the puck hard to the net, which drew some scoring chances and penalties. We need to remain committed and stay consistent with that and also do a better job in the special-teams game if we want to be successful tomorrow.”

Junior Tyler Wiseman (Burlington, Ontario) scored the lone goal for the Griffs, while junior Keegan Asmundson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) recorded 26 saves in defeat.

Canisius grabbed the early lead in the contest when Wiseman netted his third tally of the season. On a rush, Wiseman gathered a loose puck in the slot and sent a wrist shot over the left shoulder of the Bentley netminder for the 1-0 advantage. Freshman Shane Conacher (Burlington, Ontario) and sophomore Ralph Cuddemi (Concord, Ontario) both posted assists on the tally just 1:43into the contest.

The Griffs then should have extended their lead to two six minutes into the game but the referee waved off a Canisius goal. SeniorKyle Gibbons (Westlake, Ohio) blocked a Bentley shot, gathered the puck and skated into the Falcons zone, sending a shot on goal. The puck deflected off the Bentley goalie and trickled toward the net. Gibbons then skated behind the goalie and tapped the puck into the net with his stick but the referee saw it differently and ruled he kicked it in, preventing Canisius from taking its 2-0 lead.

The Falcons were able to take advantage of the official’s decision with success on the power play. Bentley scored its first extra-man goal with just 42 seconds remaining in the first period when Jared Rickord knocked the puck in from close range, squaring the contest at one after 20 minutes of play.

Bentley then took the lead when Andrew Gladiuk scored his first of two power-play goals on the day. He netted the go-ahead tally9:37 into the second frame after a Bentley player knocked the puck across the goal crease to Gladiuk, who then scored with an open look for the 2-1 advantage.

The game remained a one-goal contest until the closing minutes when Canisius was whistled for a five-minute major penalty with just7:58 left in regulation. The Falcons once again took advantage of the extra man when Gladiuk scored with 5:02 remaining in the game for the 3-1 lead. Bentley then sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with 30 seconds left for the 4-1 final score.

The Falcons finished the game with a 30-21 advantage in shots. Bentley controlled the special-teams battle, going 3-for-5 with the extra-man advantage and killing all four Canisius power plays.

Branden Komm recorded 20 saves in the winning effort for Bentley.

Colgate Men Defeat Harvard

0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Three first period goals proved to be the difference at Harvard on Saturday night as the Raiders defeated the Crimson, 4-2, for their fourth-straight win.

Colgate (11-9-3, 7-3-1 ECAC) was led by Ryan Johnston with a goal and an assist. His goal ended the night as it came on an empty net with 13 seconds left. His assist was the primary on the eventual gamewinner.

“We were able to get off to a hot start and that really set the tone for the night,” head coach Don Vaughan said. “We have had excellent starts to games in the last three weeks. It is tough to play from behind and we did too much of that earlier on in the year.

“We were able to jump on Harvard early and hang on, but I am really proud of our guys tonight and it’s great to get a win on the road.”

Charlie Finn improved his record to 7-4-2 with 23 saves and is unbeaten in his last five starts. He was tested in the third with nine saves and has not given up more than two goals during his unbeaten streak.

He continues to come up big for Colgate and he did down the stretch with the Crimson putting the pressure on late in the game.

“Huge,” said Vaughan when asked about his two saves in the final minutes. “I tell our goalies that they don’t have to make all the saves, but you have to make the right saves and he did that tonight as they were coming hard late in the game.”

Harvard (5-10-3, 3-7-3 ECAC) got its two goals on the power play from Kyle Criscuolo. Peter Traber got the start in net and lasted only the first period before being relieved by Steve Michalek. Traber made 12 stops in the first, while Michalek didn’t allow a goal on 23 shots.

The Raiders took the early 1-0 lead just 2:54 into the game with Mike McCann scoring on a one-timer from the slot. John Lidgett muscled the puck behind the net and found McCann all alone in front. The lone senior skater beat Traber on the glove side with traffic around the crease. Derek Freeman was given the secondary assist on the goal.

Colgate kept coming and Tylor Spink took advantage of a bad play in front of the Harvard net. Traber made a stop and looked for his defenseman to clear the puck, but he didn’t. Tylor Spink swooped in and shot it past Traber to make it 2-0 with 10:50 left in the first.

The Raider advantage increased to 3-0 with 3:53 left in the first period with a great tip-in from Daniel Gentzler off a pass from Johnston. The sophomore defensemen saw Gentzler streaking in from the opposite side and put the puck in front. Gentzler redirected it into the open net for his second of the season.

It was the third time this season that Colgate had scored three goals in a period with the last coming against Clarkson in a 4-3 win onNov. 16.

Harvard brought the pressure in the second period and played a better 20 minutes than the first frame. Criscuolo was able to get the Crimson on the board early in the second period with a power play goal coming on a setup play. Luke Esposito fed Criscuolo from the below the goal line after Alexander Kerfoot dropped it down to Esposito from the point.

The Crimson were able to get to within one goal with 1:52 left in the game with Criscuolo scoring on the power play again. It was a 6-on-4 man advantage score and Criscuolo was in the slot and redirected a Jimmy Vesey shot from the point.

Harvard pulled the goalie again after getting possession of the puck and Darcy Murphy looked to have iced the game, but the puck rang off the post from about 120 feet.

That almost turned out to be a big unlucky bounce in the game, but Finn stepped up huge in the final minute. The rookie netminder made two big stops on the Crimson down the stretch and he thanked his defense for a great effort all night.

“The defense did a fantastic job for me tonight,” Finn said. “They allowed me to see the puck and be honest. They were solid, along with the forwards on their back checks and made my job a lot easier.”

Johnston sealed the deal with 13 seconds left in the game with an empty net goal from center ice. The defenseman made a really nice play to get free from the Harvard attackers and fired it into the net for the 4-2 win.

“Johnston made an unbelievable read inside the blueline on the empty net goal,” Vaughan said. “He looked to see the guys eyes and stepped in front of the pass.”

The Raiders swept their second league road weekend of the season and are 7-2-3 away from Starr Rink. With the two wins this weekend, Colgate has earned league points in five of the last six games of the conference campaign.

Colgate had a 39-25 shot advantage in the game. It was the first time in three games, the Raiders did not scored on the power play. Harvard had two power play goals on five chances.

Next up for Colgate is a visit from Clarkson and St. Lawrence next weekend at Starr Rink. Tickets are available atbleedcolgatemaroon.com or by calling the Colgate Ticket Office at 315-228-7600.

NU Falls to Holy Cross

0

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara hockey team was swept on home ice by Holy Cross in an Atlantic Hockey showdown as the Crusaders routed the Purple Eagles, 3-2 on Saturday evening at Dwyer Arena.

The Crusaders (6-15-2; 5-9-2 AHA) would score the go-ahead go at 17:42 of the final period to pull ahead of the Purple and White.  Jake Youso carried the puck from the defensive zone before releasing a shot on Niagara goalie Jackson Teichroeb that was mishandled and trickled behind the net.  The Purple Eagles could not control the loose puck and it squirted out to Tommy Dwyer at the top of the crease where he deposited it into the net to secure the victory.

“Penalties took us out of the flow in the second period.  We regrouped and got through it, but we need to be a little more disciplined,” head coach Dave Burkholder said.  “From start to finish we were all over Holy Cross when we were playing 5-on-5, but you have to give them credit.  They fought to the bitter end and swept us at home.  You can’t give a team like that seven power plays and expect to win.  Two nights in a row we put at least 40 shots on goal and we have nothing to show for it so it’s tough to swallow.”

For the second straight night, Holy Cross goaltender Matt Ginn was solid in net, stopping 38 of the 40 shots Niagara fired on goal.  Teichroeb finished with 21 saves, suffering the loss for the second straight night.

After sluggish start to the opening frame in game one of the series, Niagara (5-14-3; 5-7-3 AHA) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play in the second game, outshooting Holy Cross 17-8.

Patrick Conte got the scoring started for the Purple and White at 10:36 of the frame.  Conte cleaned by a rebound on a shot by Ryan Rashid, whose attempt hit traffic out front where Conte pushed the loose puck into the back of the goal.  Holy Cross seemed to be headed into the first intermission down a goal, but Niagara’s Brock Edwards and Isaac Kohls combined with a textbook play that gave NU a two-goal lead.  Kohls connected with Edwards at the top of the slot and the freshman buried the pass with a wrister, beating Ginn glove-side.

Holy Cross responded in the second period with its own pair of tallies to tie the game at two apiece headlining into the final period of regulation.  Matt Vidal began the scoring for the Crusaders with 8:04 left in the second.  Mike Barrett caused a Niagara turnover behind its own net and fed the puck to Vidal at the top of the slot to cut Niagara’s lead in half.

It became a 2-2 game less than three minutes later as Tim Driscoll backhanded a shot off the post and past Teichroeb.

Niagara went 0-for-6 on the power play and 1-for-7 on the penalty kill.

Following this weekend’s two-game set against Holy Cross, Niagara will wrap up its five-game home stand when it hosts RIT on Jan. 24, a nationally-televised contest on CBS Sports Network.  Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Tickets are still available so call the Niagara Ticket Office (located inside Dwyer Arena) at 716-286-TIXX, visit www.PurpleEagles.com/Tickets or by emailing [email protected] to reserve your seats today!

Fayerman gave the Bears the lead back at 2:25 of the middle stanza with assists from Crawford and freshman defensemanAmanda Peterson (West Chazy, N.Y./Chazy Flyers). With a minute remaining in the period, senior forward Jessica Silveira (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) gave the Bears their two-goal lead back with the eventual game-winner. ASTON, Pa.-The SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (7-6-3, 3-3-3 ECAC West) got a hat trick from freshman forward Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Rochester Edge) and three points (1g, 2a) from senior forward Jessica Silveira (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Thunder), but had to settle for a 4-4 tie at Neumann University (3-10-1, 16-1) on Sunday afternoon. The roller coaster contest featured four lead changes and four ties

The Knights gained the upper hand early in the game. At the 8:36 mark, Grace Kleinbach scored to give Neumann its first lead of the weekend. Potsdam handled the Knight pressure after the goal and shifted the play toward Neumann’s defensive zone. At 15:15, Ott tied the score on a shot from the slot with assists from Silveira and senior assistant captain Amanda Lucky (Kanata, Ontario/Clarkson University). Nearly two minutes later a checking penalty gave the Bears their first power play of the game. Ott made the most of the opportunity with her second of the contest at 18:56. Silveira recorded her second assist and senior captain Brittany Lucky (Kanata, Ontario/Ottawa Senators) notched the other helper. Potsdam outshot the Knights 9-8 in the first period and the Bears held the one-goal lead at the break.

Neumann opened the middle period with good pressure. The Knights outshot Potsdam 8-0 over the first half of the stanza and it paid off. Meghan Power tied the game at 6:42. Just 30 seconds later Donna Williams regained the lead for Neumann at 3-2. At 12:57, Ott completed her hat trick to tie the game with her second power play tally of the contest. Both Luckys assisted on the goal. Neumann continued to pepper Bears sophomore goalie Alexane Rodrigue (Monkland, Ontario/Bemidji State) with shots, but it was Potsdam that got the last goal of the period. Silveira finished a feed from Ott with two seconds left to give the Bears a 4-3 advantage after 40 minutes. The Knights outshot Potsdam 16-5 in the second period.

The third period was more evenly played and Neumann was able to tie the score at the 13:51 mark. Megan Russelo got the even strength equalizer for the Knights. Defense controlled much of the remainder of the period and regulation ended with the score knotted at 4-4.

The first three minutes of overtime was marked by end to end rushes with no great chances. With 1:17 left, a Bear was hauled down and Potsdam went on the power play for the rest of the game. The Bears moved the puck well in the Neumann zone, but were unable to net the game-winner.

Rodrigue finished with 27 saves, while Knight goalie Justina Mayr stopped 14 shots. The Bears were 2-5 on the power play and Neumann was 0-2.

She’s eighth in goals-per-game with 0.87 and second in power-play-goals with seven. Silveira is 24th in the nation in scoring with 1.19 points-per-game and is tied with teammate Brittany Lucky in assists-per-game with 0.81.

Lakers Down Bengals in Weekend Series

The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team completed the weekend sweep of Buffalo State with a 3-0 victory on the road on Sunday afternoon. Oswego’s win improves the team’s overall record to 10-4-1 on the season while its conference mark moves to 6-1-1.

Bridget Smith earned the win for the Lakers, stopping 16 Bengal attempts between the pipes. As a team, Oswego out-fired Buffalo State, more than doubling the Bengal shot total (34-16).

The two teams played a completely clean first period, void of any goals or penalties. It was a penalty on Buffalo State that gave the Lakers their opportunity to score in the second. Kendall Appelbaum was able to put Oswego on the board just over a minute into a power-play chance after a Bengal two-minute hooking penalty. It was Appelbaum’s fifth goal of the season and was assisted by Ashley Lyman and assistant captain Jocelyn St. Clair.

Oswego held the 1-0 advantage through the final intermission until it was able to add a second goal early in the third period. Lyman earned her second point of the game at 5:11 with another assist, this time as Alexa Aramburu buried her third score of the year.

The Laker’s were not done, however, adding one more goal three minutes later. At 8:49, Emma Smetaniuk cashed in her fourth score of the year without any assistance.

Oswego will return to the ice and to the Campus Center after a four-game road trip at 7 p.m. on Friday night against Elmira College.

Canisius, Bentley Tie

0

The Canisius College hockey team and Bentley fought to a 2-2 draw on Sunday afternoon at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. The Griffs are now 8-12-2 on the season and 7-6-2 in Atlantic Hockey play, while the Falcons stand at 12-8-3 and 10-3-3 against league foes.

“It was a close game from start to finish,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. “Our team really played hard and in the right areas – getting good goaltending and a better effort from our special teams. When two good teams play properly, there is a fine line between winning, losing and a tie like today. We got better from yesterday, played hard as a team and really worked hard for that one point.”

Senior Patrick Sullivan (Derby, N.Y.) and junior Tyler Wiseman (Burlington, Ontario) both scored for the Griffs in the tie.

Junior Tony Capobianco (Mississauga, Ontario) recorded 34 saves in net.

Canisius opened the scoring when Sullivan netted his seventh goal of the campaign. On a rush, the senior chipped the puck to himself off the boards when entering the Bentley zone. He then scored glove side from the left face-off circle for the early 1-0 lead. SeniorKyle Gibbons (Westlake, Ohio) and sophomore Chris Rumble (Seattle, Wash.) both posted assists on the goal 14:27 into the contest.

The Griffs then stretched their lead to two tallies when Wiseman scored his fourth goal of the season. With Canisius a man down, Wiseman forced a Bentley turnover at the blue line and then skated in on a breakaway. The junior then beat the Falcons netiminder high and glove-side for the unassisted short-handed goal at the 5:01 mark of the second.

Bentley, however, answered back and rallied for the draw. The Falcons cut their deficit in half when Jared Rickord finished a 2-on-1 break with 8:16 remaining in the second. Bentley then squared the game with 14:12 left in regulation when Brett Gensler scored a power-play goal.

Capobianco was then key in preserving the 2-2 draw for Canisius. The senior recorded five saves in the extra session, which included a nice stop with an open look on a rebound, to help the Griffs earn a point in the contest.

Bentley finished the game with a slight advantage in shots, 36-34. The Falcons were also 1-for-2 on the power play, while Canisius didn’t convert in one extra-man chance.

The Griffs are back in Atlantic Hockey action on Thursday with a home game against first-place Mercyhurst. Canisius, which handed the Lakers their only loss of the conference season this year, welcomes Mercyhurst to the Buffalo State Sports Arena for a 7:05 p.m.start.

Piacetini Scores in OT for Orange Win

0

SYRACUSE, N.Y.—
Melissa Piacentini‘s overtime goal pushed the Syracuse ice hockey team past RIT, 5-4 on Friday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion, redeeming the Orange’s loss last Friday to the Tigers. Piacentini totaled two goals and an assist in her efforts against RIT while freshman forward Jessica Sibley scored three points of her own two goals and an assist.

“Our mindset coming into the game was that we had to push back,” head coach Paul Flanagan said. “We had to be a little more physical than we were last Friday and then you have to make plays and I think we did a good job but a couple of missed coverages really cost us in some of those late goals.”

Syracuse controlled the puck throughout the 58 seconds of overtime, preventing the Tigers from getting any shots off. Syracuse attempted four shots in extra minutes, three on target but it was the last that gave the Orange its win over RIT.

SU put 49 shots on target and totaled 78 shots throughout the contest while RIT managed 23 shots at the net and 41 overall. Syracuse went 1-3 on power play opportunities and extended its streak to seven straight games with a man-up goal.

Nicole Renault assisted on the game-winning goal, which increased her point scoring stretch to five games. Piacentini and Sibley both scored two goals to maintain their team-leading totals and Sibley’s three points on the night made her the team-leader in the category. Piacentini is currently on a four-game goal scoring streak and has totaled six points in the last four games.

Jenesica Drinkwater made 19 saves and the SU defense blocked 14 shots to thwart the Tigers’ offense while RIT’s Jetta Rackleff made 44 stops in net.

Piacentini opened scoring 2:52 into the game when she carried the puck up the right side past the blue line and took a wrist shot from the hash mark. The goalie mishandled the routine save and the puck slipped under her stick to put the Orange up 1-0.

RIT was quick to tie the game, however, attacking the net mid-way through the first period and coming up with a score. Erin Zach shot one at Drinkwater, who made the save but Kolbee McCrea was there for the put-back at the far post, tying the game at 1-1 with 10:03 remaining in the first.

With 5:26 remaining in the first stanza, Morgan Scoyne took a shot from the point while on the power play that slipped past Drinkwater’s shoulder and into the goal, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead going into the first intermission.

The Orange used a man-advantage opportunity of its own late in the second period to delete the RIT lead, bringing the score to 2-2 going into the intermission. Larissa Martyniuk took a shot from the bottom of the right circle, which Akane Hosoyamada attempted to tip in front of the net but the puck got loose and found its way to Jessica Sibley, who sent in the equalizer.

Allie LaCombe added another goal to the SU tally to take the lead 9:19 into the third period. Sibley passed the puck from behind the net to Piacentini in front, who got it to LaCombe with a drop pass. Just under three minutes later Sibley scored the lead-extending goal when she stole the puck from the RIT defense and shot it top shelf to give the Orange a 4-2 advantage.

RIT added two more within three minutes of eachother, however, bringing the score to 4-4 and forcing overtime.

Just 58 seconds into overtime Syracuse found its game-winner when Brittney Krebs slap shot it at the net from the right side, which got caught in traffic and Piacentini slid the puck into the net to put an end to the game.

Syracuse is back in action against Penn State next weekend, taking on the Nittany Lions at home in Tennity Ice Pavilion on Friday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m.

Bears Fall to Wildcats

POTSDAM, N.Y.-Johnson & Wales University (12-3) battled with the SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team (6-9) for 60 minutes and escaped Maxcy Ice Arena with a 2-1 victory on Friday night. Sophomore forward Matt Thompson (Anchorage, Alaska/Kenai River Brown Bears) scored for the Bears, while freshman forward Stefan Brucato (Lake Elsinore, Calif./Idaho Steelheads) led J&W with two assists.

The Wildcats diffused an early Potsdam threat and answered with good pressure of its own in the opening period. Johnson & Wales took the first six shots of the contest, but Bears senior goalieShane Talarico (Greensburg, Pa./Elmira College) handled each one. Potsdam picked up the play after the flurry and created several quality chances of its own, but didn’t get on the board in the first period. The Bears killed two power plays to the Wildcats’ one and the teams entered the break with a scoreless draw.

Potsdam continued to hold its own early in the middle stanza, but was unable to get on the board. The Bears were awarded a five-minute power play at the 4:31 mark after J&W freshman forward Drew Kariofiles (Cincinnati, Ohio/Topeka Road Runners) was ejected for hitting Potsdam junior forward Trevor Cope (Swartz Creek, Mich/Atlanta Jr. Knights) from behind. The Wildcats killed the major and picked up momentum. At the 12:43 mark, J&W went on the power play for the third time in game and made the most of it. With 25 seconds left on the man advantage, Wildcat sophomore forward Cody Sarmiento (Sarasota, Fla./Jamestown Ironmen) fed freshman defenseman Michael Mazzotta (Mars, Pa./Jamestown Ironmen) at the point and Mazzotta ripped a shot past Talarico for a 1-0 lead. Brucato notched the second assist on the play. J&W continued to control the game after the goal and hit the post before the second period expired.

The Bears were immediately put on the defensive in the second period, taking a boarding penalty just 35 seconds in. After killing the penalty, Potsdam turned up the pressure in the offensive zone, but still struggled to solve Ballmer. Finally at 9:51, Thompson beat Ballmer with a pass from classmate Todd Thomas (Davidsville, Pa./Hartford Wolfpack) to tie the score. The relief was short lived as the Wildcats answered just 23 seconds later. Sophomore forward Josh Obregon (Omaha, Neb./Odessa Jackalopes) scored from the slot on a pass from Brucato for the eventual game-winner. The Bears continued to battle with little luck. Talarico was pulled with 1:09 remaining and Potsdam created a few more chances, but Ballmer slammed the door.

Ballmer finished with 40 saves, while Talarico stopped 26 shots. J&W was 1-4 on the power play and Potsdam went 0-2.

Next, the Bears travel to Geneva, N.Y. to face the Hobart College Statesmen at 7 p.m.
