Niagara’s Delmas Selected As A Candidate For Senior Class Award

0

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (January 22, 2020) – Niagara senior defenseman Noah Delmas has been named as one of 20 men’s ice hockey student-athlete candidates for the 2019-20 Senior Class Award.

Delmas is one of five Atlantic Hockey players named to the list of 20 candidates.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as a NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

The 20 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists in February, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs.

Classroom
Delmas is a three-time AHA All-Academic honoree majoring in marketing.

Character
After serving as an alternate captain as a junior, Delmas was named the 28th captain in Niagara history prior to his senior season.

When asked why Delmas was given the honor, head coach Jason Lammers had this to say: “Noah embodies our mission as a person, student and player. His own personal growth has been impressive and now he has the honor to lead others by putting ‘we’ ahead of ‘me.'”

Delmas’ passion and reliability on the ice are mirrored by his ability to hold himself and his teammates accountable.

Off the ice, Delmas is approachable, easy to talk to, and always upbeat. His presence in the locker room is the same as with the media or amongst his peers.

Community
Delmas and the rest of his teammates have brought in 7-year-old Jack Marchetta from Team IMPACT to join them during the 2019-20 season. Marchetta has suffered from juvenile dermatomyositis, a rare autoimmune disorder, since birth. To keep his health and strength, he plays hockey and soccer.

At Jack’s introductory press conference in September, Delmas spoke with the Buffalo News about what it meant for both sides to be connected in this way: “Everyone is going through something, whether you know it or not. In our regular, everyday lives, we don’t realize how much of an impact we can have on younger people. Just a friendly hangout, or having Jackson come to the rink, that can change his day or his week.”

Competition
Delmas is coming off a stellar junior season that saw him compete in each of the team’s 41 games. He finished fourth among all defensemen in the nation in terms of both goals (15) and points (40) while pacing the Purple Eagles with 25 assists. Over the course of the year, Delmas earned two seperate Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week awards and was tabbed as the AHA Player of the Month for November. At season’s end, his play earned him a spot on the All-Conference Third Team.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2020 NCAA Men’s Frozen Final Four® in April.

About the Senior CLASS Award
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The WNYGVIH Tenth Federation Playoffs opened Tuesday, January 21 with Niagara County (8) facing Lancaster/Iroquois/Depew (LID).

A power-play goal by Cavalieri with 1:35 left sent the first period to a 2-0 score.

Game Three Is Upset of Day

There has to be some type of upset and the Hamburg/Eden/West Seneca vs Monsignor Martin was it.

HEWS started the scoring in the first period, and also ended the scoring in the first period.

Carleigh Sutfin scored at 5:50 of the first period, assisted by Olivia Wade.

Both teams pressured each other and in the end HEWS Goalie Lauren Brown got the shut-out with 26 saves.

In goal for Monsignor Martin was Grace Harrington who stopped 12 of 13 shots.

HEWS moves to the semi-finals and will take on #1 LID.

FLOP Seals Semi-Final Spot

Another low scoring game and one for the goalies to keep in check.

Frontier/LakeShore/Orchard Park put in the first goal at 9:06 of the first period when Brooke Becker had an unassisted goal. The period ends FLOP 1-0 over Kenmore/Grand Island.

Kenmore/Grand Island opened the scoring in the second period with a goal by Abigail Blair, assisted by Savannah Samplinski.

SAINTS GOALIE LEADING USHL IN GOALS AGAINST

DUBUQUE, Iowa — For the second time this season, Erik Portillo was named the USHL Goalie of the Week. Portillo, who already won the award on November 19th, secured his second weekly honors after a 38-save performance against the Waterloo Black Hawks. Portillo shut down the Hawks, stopping 14 of 15 shots in the 3rd period to keep Waterloo out of striking distance.

The win for Portillo was his 13th of the season, placing him in a three-way tie for third in the USHL. He also ranks first in goals against (2.05) and second in save percentage (.918). Since his return from the World Juniors, Portillo has continued his stellar play against some of the league’s best teams in Waterloo and Chicago.

The win against Waterloo, in which Portillo allowed just one goal, marked the 10th time in 18 games that he has allowed just one tally. No other goalie in the USHL can claim more games than that. For Portillo, he joins Braden Doyle as the only other Saints player who has received weekly honors more than once this season. Aidan McCarthy was also tabbed the Goalie of the Week earlier in the year. The Saints have yet to see a forward win the award despite some solid performances from that group.

AMERKS GET THREE FORWARDS FROM BUFFALO

  • The Buffalo Sabres reassigned forwards Rasmus Asplund and Scott Wilson as well as defenseman Lawrence Pilut to the Amerks on Sunday.
  • Asplund returns to Rochester after spending nearly three months during his first-career recall with the Sabres.
    • The Swedish forward posted three points (1+2) in 28 contests since making his NHL debut for Buffalo back on Nov. 16 against Ottawa. He recorded his first NHL point on Jimmy Vesey’s second-period goal against Calgary on Nov. 27 and scored his first NHL goal at the 19:01 mark of Buffalo’s 7-1 rout over New Jersey on Dec. 2.
  • Wilson and Pilut both return following their first and second recalls of the season, respectively. Pilut registered five shots in six games with the Sabres while Wilson posted three shots in two contests.

ALL-STAR BOUND

  • Defenseman Lawrence Pilut and goaltender Jonas Johansson have been named to the North Division All-Star roster for the 2020 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Ontario International Airport. The annual event will take place Jan. 26-27 at Toyota Arena in Ontario, Calif., home of the Ontario Reign. The Swedish duo will also be joined by Amerks head coach Chris Taylor, who clinched the honor of coaching the North Division squad.

SHARING THE CREASE

  • Anchored by the goaltending tandem of veteran Andrew Hammond and third-year pro Jonas Johansson, the Amerks own one of the top defenses in AHL, having allowed only 108 goals through the first 40 games of the season, the third-fewest in the AHL coming into this week. The duo has also combined for six shutouts and continue to rank among the AHL’s goaltending leaders with 10 and 11 wins on the season, respectively.
  • Hammond (10-9-2) ranks second among all netminders after notching his fourth shutout of the season back on Dec. 14 in a 5-0 win over Laval, a new career-high. With four shutouts through just 23 games this season, he’s on pace to match the franchise record for most shutouts in a season (8) set by Ryan Miller during the 2004-05 campaign.
  • Having won nine of his last 11 appearances, Johansson shows an AHL career-best 11-3-3 record with two shutouts this season. He has the fifth-best goal-against average in the league (2.23) and ranks sixth among all netminders with a .924 save percentage in 18 games. • The 2019-20 season is just a different chapter in the same story for the 31-year-old Redmond, who hasn’t gone more than five games without a point all season. The two-time AHL All-Star and reigning Eddie Shore Award winner is tied for 10th in scoring among all defensemen with 24 points and ranks 10th with a team-high 19 assists. He’s also tied for 20th for goals by a defenseman with five through 37 games this season.
    • Back from his second recall with the Sabres, Pilut has 16 points (4+12) over his last 21 games dating back to Nov. 15, including goals in three of his last seven outings. Having already established a new AHL career-high in goals, the former SHL Defenseman of the Year is also on pace to set a new career-high in points.
    • After missing two games and returning to the lineup this past Friday night, Nelson is tied for 13th among all active blueliners with a team-best plus-13 on-ice rating through 35 games.
  • Rookie defenseman Jacob Bryson is 18th in the AHL for all first-year players with a plus-6 on-ice rating while being the only Amerk to appear in all 40 games so far this season.

Koocher Earns CHA Rookie of The Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman forward Brynn Koocher earned her first College Hockey America (CHA) Rookie of the Week honor Monday after a two-point weekend at Robert Morris. Koocher scored a goal and an assist in the series, her Saturday lamp-lighter helping ‘Cuse shutout RMU, 1-0, while also giving Syracuse head coach Paul Flanagan his 400th career win. Koocher is the fifth Orange and second freshmen to win a CHA weekly honor this season. Her nod comes on the heels of Mae Batherson receiving the same honor last week after recording four points against Mercyhurst.

Koocher’s assist came midway through game one of the series when she gathered the puck behind the net and tossed it out front for a gliding Abby Moloughney, Moloughney going glove side to make the score 2-1 Colonials. Koocher’s goal came in the final period of game two when she settled a rebound in front of the goalie and threw it in to put Syracuse ahead three minutes into the final stanza.

This is the sixth weekly honor Syracuse has earned this season. In addition to last week, Batherson was recognized on Nov. 4 for registering three-points (2G, 1A) against RIT. Junior goaltender Allison Small picked up a Goaltender of the Week nod on Nov. 25 after making 47 saves over two games against Penn State to help ‘Cuse go 1-0-1 in the series. UNYCHL Update

0

BY JON MARCHESE —

Second semester madness. That is the best way to describe the second-half of the UNYCHL season.

The West will likely come down to the final weekend as both Buffalo and Fredonia sit tied at 7-1-1 while ECC is 4-0-2.

Saturday February 8th Fredonia will play at ECC and Sunday February 9th Buffalo will be at ECC.

The top three teams qualify for postseason play as UB and Fredonia have already clinched. ECC needs just 2 points over their final four games to qualify.

What’s at stake? The UNYCHL changed its playoff format to a crossover after round one. The third place team travels to the second place team within the division however; the winner of that game will then play at the number one seed of the Fingerlakes division.

That spot is currently owned by St Bonaventure (who is 11-0 in division play; however Fredonia did defeat them in a prior head to head this year).

The school that finishes first in the West gets to host the #2/#3 winner of the Fingerlakes. Brockport has secured a playoff spot while University of Rochester currently holds the three seed.

Further East Clarkson and Binghamton comfortably hold playoff spots while Hamilton/Union/Albany will fight for the other two.

The UNYCHL final four is Saturday February 22 and Sunday February 23.
