Jr. Sabres Costantini Wins OJHL Award

0

BUFFALO’S COSTANTINI NAMED OJHL’S TOP PROSPECT
College-bound Jr. Sabre top-ranked OJHLer in 2020 NHL Draft

Mississauga, ON –….The Ontario Junior Hockey League announced that Matteo Costantini of the  Buffalo Jr. Sabres is the OJHL’s Top Prospect for 2019-20.
Costantini was ranked 96 thon National Hockey League Central Scouting’s final draft rankings released Wednesday – tops of the four OJHL players included on the list. The Top Prospect award is presented to the player adjudged by NHL Central Scouting to be the league’s best prospect for the upcoming NHL Draft.
The OJHL is announcing the winners of its annual awards this spring.
Costantini, a 17-year-old from St. Catharines, jumped onto the junior hockey scene this season, scoring 68 points (36G/32A) in 50 games in Buffalo. He was named to the OJHL second all-star team and played in the Prospects Game at the OJHL All-Star Celebration. In Buffalo’s first-round playoff win over Burlington, Costantini led both teams with 10 points (2G/8A) in six games.
“For us this year, Matteo was a dynamic 200-foot centreman,” Jr. Sabres general manager and head coach Nick Tuzzolino said this week. “He not only created offense for himself but for all of his teammates around him. We used him in all situations, whether we were down by a goal at the end of the game, or we had the lead and were trying to close the game out.”
“Matteo transformed from a gifted offensive player at the beginning of the year to a complete hockey player by the season’s end.”
Two years ago, Costantini was the third from last – 298 thoverall – player selected in the Ontario Hockey League draft by the Hamilton Bulldogs from the Niagara North Stars AAA minor midgets.
He was 5-foot-7 and 150 pounds, a shadow of his current 6-foot, 180.
“Not everybody gets drafted and I was fortunate to be picked,” he said. “From there it was just keeping my head down, pushing, grinding. Trying to be the best player I could be. I just kept working hard. And after that, new doors started to open for me.”
Since the age of 14, Costantini has worked out during summers at the LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo, home of the Jr. Sabres and practice facility for the NHL Sabres.
Impressed with the staff in Buffalo, he signed with the midget U16 minor Sabres and lit it up – 101 points in 87 games – during the 2018-19 season.
“We saw a dynamic offensive player with great speed and scoring ability,” Tuzzolino recalls. “His major improvement this year is that he became a complete player. He was reliable in all three zones and was used in every situation.”
Costantini and Jr. Sabres teammate Michael Craig carpooled daily – NEXUS cards in hand – from their St. Catharines high school across the border to LECOM Harborcenter this past season.
“Pretty smooth,” Costantini said. “Maybe 35 minutes. A pretty straight shot.”
Costantini credits Tuzzolino and assistant coach Tim Kennedy, the former NHLer from Buffalo, for helping him transform his game – and his teammates’.
“I have to give a lot of credit to our coaching staff,” he said on Good Friday. “They put a lot of faith in me this year and set up a really good structure for me and the team. The boys just bought in. It was a real tight group in Buffalo this year and when the team started to succeed it just led to individual success, as well.
“I thought it was a really good year for us. We were young but resilient. It’s just sad that we couldn’t see what would happen. But sometimes life happens and you just have to deal with it.”
NHL scouts and NCAA coaches agreed with Coach/GM Tuzzolino’s assessment. Costantini has had plenty of school interest but is the only one of the four OJHLers on the NHL draft list without a college commitment.
For now.
He was in the middle of the process, visiting campuses and speaking to coaches, when COVID-19 struck. Depending on how those talks go, Costantini could be playing college this fall or return to junior.
For now, he’s completing his Grade 12 courses online and working out in his family’s basement gym. To mix things up, there’s a hill to tackle in his St. Catharines neighbourhood.
And then there’s the matter of the NHL Draft. Originally scheduled for Montreal in June, it will be rescheduled, the NHL says.

Elmira’s Ford Named To All-USCHO Third Team

0

ELMIRA, N.Y. —Nick Ford ’20 of the Elmira College men’s ice hockey team added to his collection of awards, as he was named to the All-USCHO Third Team by U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO).

Ford, a former AHCA All-American and an All-UCHC Second Team honoree in 2020, enjoyed another successful season during the 2019-20 campaign. He capped his senior year with 40 points on 13 goals and 27 assists in 26 games played.

A product of New Lenox, Illinois, Ford’s 40 points and 27 assists paced the Purple and Gold, while his 13 goals ranked second on the squad. He became just the third Soaring Eagle in program history to lead the team in points in three consecutive seasons, joining former EC greats Pierre Rivard ’04 and Kurt Kalweit ’84 with that honor.

A model of consistency, Ford was a steady point producer for the Soaring Eagles throughout his career, but he took it to another level this past season. Ford’s name can be found on the scoresheet from each and every game during the 2019-20 season, as he concluded his collegiate career on a 26-game point streak. During that time, Ford produced 10 multi-point performances.

Ford exits Elmira with 149 points, a mark that is tied for 14th in EC history, on 63 goals and 83 assists.

Although his collegiate career concluded in late February, Ford forged ahead in the professional ranks with the Florida Everblades of the ECHL, affiliates of the NHL’s Nashville Predators. In three games with the Everblades, Ford produced one assist.

Senior captain recorded 68 points from the blue line for Engineers

TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s hockey player Will Reilly has signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League, it was announced on Wednesday. A seventh round selection by Pittsburgh in the 2017 draft, Reilly played four seasons for the Engineers.

A senior defenseman and captain from Toronto, Ont., Reilly played in all 34 games for the Engineers this season, recording eight goals and 14 assists for 22 points to earn All-ECAC Hockey Second Team honors. The team-leader in plus/minus at +14, he also led the club in power play points with nine, on four goals and five assists. Averaging a team-high 2.53 shots per game, he had 27 blocked shots and was assessed six penalties for 12 minutes.

Reilly anchored a defensive unit that has allowed 2.55 goals per game overall and just 1.86 during ECAC Hockey play. RPI’s penalty kill of 86.0% ranked second in the league and 12th in the country. In 22 conference games, the former Nanaimo Clippers standout had six goals and 10 assists for 16 points, with a team-high +17 rating.

Offensively, Reilly recorded five multi-point efforts, including a three-point game against St. Lawrence on November 8 at the Houston Field House. He had a goal and two assists in that contest, as the Engineers won, 6-2. A finalist for the conference’s Top Defensive Defenseman, he ranked second in goals, fourth in plus/minus and fifth in points among league blueliners.

As a junior, Reilly notched five goals and 13 assists for 18 points in 33 games. Limited to just 19 league contests, he had one goal and eight assists for nine points. In 2017-18, he collected seven goals and 13 assists for 20 points in 37 games.

In 139 career games at RPI, Reilly notched 22 goals and 46 assists for 68 points.

Reilly became the 64th RPI player in program history to be drafted and the third to be selected by the Penguins, joining Matt Murley ’02 and Andrew McPherson ’02, who were both taken in the 1999 Entry Draft.

RPI posted a 17-15-2 overall record, this season, including a 13-8-1 mark in ECAC Hockey play, earning its first bye in the conference tournament since the 2012-13 season. The Engineers’ 17 victories are the most since 2015-16.

Pegula Sports & Entertainment announces Furloughs, Executive Pay Reductions and Layoffs

BUFFALO, NY – – With the Buffalo Sabres scheduled regular season ending last weekend, Pegula Sports & Entertainment officials announced a series of organizational changes, including temporary executive salary reductions, 21 layoffs and 104 furloughs from among its 3,000 employees across PSE’s portfolio companies, due to how the COVID-19 pandemic has curtailed operations.

“There is no way to adequately express how difficult these decisions were for Terry and me. It is not something we took lightly, and we are fully aware of the hardships that exist across our community and country right now,” said President and CEO Kim Pegula. “We feel for all the employees and families who will be affected, and we hope that we can all return to full strength in the coming weeks and months.”

“We are also hopeful the steps we are taking now will help us preserve the health of our companies and ensure we are here to provide the jobs and entertainment on which our community depends,” Pegula said.

PSE will continue to pay for health insurance for all furloughed employees. They are expected to be able to reassume their jobs, which, in most cases, they cannot presently perform due to the health crisis or the pause in games. The furloughs begin April 15.

In addition to the furloughs, more than three dozen employees across numerous PSE entities and hockey executives will take temporary tiered percentage pay cuts to spread resources within the organization. These include management, hockey staff, broadcasters, as well as contracted employees. Salaried workers paid at lower levels will not be part of the salary-reduction group.

The Buffalo Bills continue to operate at normal levels as there is currently no change to the start of the National Football League’s regular season. With major sporting events postponed or in flux, PSE will continue to closely the monitor the situation.

Wilkinson Garners Senior CLASS First Team All-America

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Alex Wilkinson of the Army West Point hockey team was named a Senior CLASS Award First Team All-American, announced by the organization on Friday.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: classroom, community, character and competition.

“I am so proud of Wilky for being named a first team All-American,” said head coach Brian Riley. “He represents all that is good about college athletics and plays the game the right way. It’s been both an honor and privilege to coach him the last four years. I am looking forward to watching him go on and do great things as an Officer in the U.S. Army.

Named the Atlantic Hockey Association Individual Sportsman of the Year, Wilkinson served as one of the team’s alternate captains during his senior season.

Arguably one of Wilkinson’s greatest accomplishments is his ability to stay out of the penalty box. After playing in 67 games, the Raleigh, N.C., native recorded just one penalty in the past two seasons and zero during his senior campaign.

Wilkinson was one of seven Cadets to play in all 33 games this year. He scored four goals, two on the power play, and dished out nine assists for 13 points. Wilkinson posted 50 blocks as well.

The defenseman finishes his career with 17 goals and 59 assists for 76 points in 132 games played. Wilkinson also had eight power play goals and four game-winners. The senior graduates with just nine penalties in his four years wearing an Army sweater.

With most AHL buildings open and the season currently suspended, the Amerks, Comets, Crunch, and Devils have decided to join forces to use their resources to help New York State maintain a healthy blood supply for hospital patients and shed light on one of the many ways the local communities can help. The drives will be operated by the American Red Cross and followprecautions to maintain social distancing requirements in a safe and sanitized space.

Coronavirus And The 2020-21 Hockey Season: An Opportunity In Disguise?

0

BY SCOTT THEN —

Let me paint this picture…

Your child has worked their tail off, and a group of 15 kids have managed to come together to have one of the best seasons you can remember them being a part of. Your parents are like the greatest group at any local pub, all enjoying each other’s company, and knowing what is going on in each family’s life. Your team has a great regular season, the playoffs go well, and next thing you know, you are a participant in the state, district, and finally the National Tournament for USA Hockey.

Sounds great, doesn’t it? It gets better, your child’s team does so well that they make the finals, and maybe even win the National Title at their age group. WOW! Little Johnny, and little Jenny get to live the time of their life. You know how long they get to celebrate… 48 hours. How is that possible? Well because tryouts for the next season begin 48 hours after the final game of the National Tournament.

You now have 48 hours to figure out where they will tryout next year. You must take into account geography, who is aging up, who the coach is, what are the reputation of the associations, does my child play Tier 1, Tier 2, AAA, AA… oh my gosh, so many decisions in 48 hours. Every team has their first tryout in the first 2 hours that they are allowed to, so hope you are a good guesser as far as what coach will take them and if it’s a good fit. And then, even better, is that early tryouts eliminate the coach to truly know what the player will look like the following season.

This year, parents have the greatest opportunity I have seen in 45 years of being involved in Youth Hockey, between playing and coaching. NYSAHA is looking at August tryouts, something unheard of here. Parents can take the time to reach out to coaches, remember, they are not allowed to reach out to recruit players, but you certainly can do your due diligence to see what kind of coach they are and what their plan is.

Don’t be afraid to interrogate the coach, remember, as much as they are a volunteer, you are entrusting the development of your child, not only as a player but as a citizen, student, and person in general to that coach. Some questions to think of…

  • What is you season goal, both for my child and for the team?
  • What is your coaching Philosophy? (Friendship, mentor, authoritative)
  • Who are you having help you this year?
  • What is your team strategy?
  • How many players do you want to carry?
  • Where do you see my child fitting in your plan?
  • Who do you want to play against? Where? When? Why?

This is the greatest opportunity for a parent to get the most for the huge investment that they are about to make in their child. Take advantage of it, you might find a diamond in the rough.

Six From New York State Among 2020 NHL Draft Final Rankings

0

By Warren Kozireski —

The list of five New Yorkers listed in the NHL Central Scouting midterm rankings for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft has expanded to six as the final rankings were released April 8th. The bad news is that four players from that list saw their ranking drop from January.

Baldwinsville native Luke Tuch was slotted 35th overall and is now 40th among North American skaters and projected to go in the second or third round. The 6’2”, 203 lb. left wing and brother of Las Vegas Knights forward Alex Tuch played this past season for the U.S. National Team Development Program in Michigan. The Fall 2020 Boston University commit didn’t maintain the offensive pace of the first half of the season and finished with 15 goals and 30 points over 47 games.

Fellow NTDP product Eamon Powell dropped two slots from 49th to 51st among North American skaters. The 5’11”, 165 lb. offensive defenseman and Marcellus native registered 14 points over 43 games in this abbreviated season. He is scheduled to join Boston College this fall.

Williamsville’s Trevor Kuntar is listed 143rd falling eight slots. The 5’11”, 197 lb. center was in his third season with Youngstown in the USHL where he put up a career-best 28 goals and 53 points in 44 games. He is committed to Harvard in 2020.

Lake View native Declan McDonnell spent four seasons in the Buffalo Jr. Sabres system before jumping to the OHL with Kitchener this year. Unranked at midterm, he jumped onto the radar of many scouts as the 5’9”, 160 lb. right wing scored 21 goals with 21 assists over his 63 games.
