The Task Force discussed Governor’s reopening plan and its impact upon interscholastic athletics.  At this time, schools are still prohibited from any indoor activities, any in-person instruction (excluding special education), and any organized sports or recreational activities that are hosted/operated.

The NYSPHSAA Task Force reviewed six potential return to school scenarios, including a full return to school, a hybrid education model, a full virtual learning model, and regional differences model. The Task Force reviewed proposals to address each scenario.  The proposals include a full return to athletic participation, potential adjustment of seasons and/ or condensing seasons.  The Task Force is finalizing the proposals and plans to release the document to the NYSPHSAA membership by the end of the week in an effort to gather feedback.

The meeting concluded with a presentation of the EzSCRN Application from Paul Bailey, President of Total Concussion Management. The EzSCRN Application, which provides a unique online tool for schools to utilize if screening is part of their reopening plan, would allow a school or team to easily screen students and immediately notify school administrators and health care officials of any students who exhibit COVID-19 symptoms.   The Task Force plans to continue discussion about this application at their next meeting.

“Caty, Neve and Meg will all play important roles for the Beauts this season,” said Buffalo GM Nate Oliver. “They are all winners and dedicated team players. Our fans saw last season what Meg brings to the table – she’s tenacious and fearless anytime she is on the ice. Toronto Six Unveil Three Jerseys

0

TORONTO – For their inaugural NWHL season in 2020-21, the Toronto Six have created three jerseys.

The home jersey of the Six has black for its base colour. As the first Canadian team in the NWHL, the Six wanted to connect closely with the country’s colors and flag. Red and gold trim from the Six brand’s core colors are used as accents throughout the uniform.

The goal of the team for its home and road jerseys was to have a clean and classic look that honoured Canadian hockey.

The Third Jersey features an all-over pattern with the Toronto Six maple leaf and the city name across the uniform. Additionally, six stripes are shown on the sleeves and socks of this uniform to represent the team name and 2020-21 being the sixth NWHL season.

Each jersey has a golden collar to represent the golden horseshoe of the Toronto area. The Canadian flag has been included on the shoulder with the 6IX branding on the shoulder.

In other news, the Toronto Six have launched an online team store. Toronto Six shirseys, hats, accessories, and more are available for the first time. Fans can shop now at T6 Shop. Replica jerseys will be available soon.

To celebrate the launch of the online store, for a limited time fans can purchase a “T6 Fan Pack” that contains a Toronto 6 t-shirt, a white snap back deluxe twill hat with raised crest T6 logo and “EST 2020” embroidered at the side, and a T6 branded face mask.

General Manager Ray Welsh remarked that with the addition of Hill, the Jr. Enforcers have one of the strongest coaching staffs in the USPHL as Head Coach Murphy, Goaltending Coach Sebastien Caron, and Assistant Coach Jamie Hill all have invaluable pro hockey experience.

MacDonald Chosen To Lead Stout Into A New Era

0

MENOMONIE  – Mike MacDonald, a SUNY-Geneseo graduate, has been selected to lead the UW-Stout hockey program into a new era.

Mike MacDonald
Mike MacDonald

MacDonald, an assistant hockey coach at Curry College the last four years, will take over the Blue Devil program with the 2020-21 season. MacDonald follows Terry Watkins, who was Stout’s varsity coach for 24 seasons and eight years as the club coach.

“I believe that UW-Stout has much to offer it’s hockey players,” MacDonald said about his interest in the program. “The last couple of years that I was playing (at SUNY-Geneseo), the hockey team under Terry Watkins, was a powerhouse. My goal is to bring the program back to that level.”

“Mike will have the opportunity to make a unique transition,” UW-Stout athletic director Duey Naatz said. “He will be ushering in a new era of Stout hockey. We are excited for the vision he has for our hockey program, both on and off the ice.”

“I am most excited in the possibilities of recruiting for UW-Stout,” MacDonald said. “As far as a hockey student-athlete, Stout has a good fit for almost any student out there. UW-Stout graduates are in a good position to step into a job right away.”

“We will have the opportunity to expand our recruiting,” MacDonald said. “We will be committed to finding the right players for UW-Stout, regardless of location.”

During his time at Curry the team has steadily improved each season, posting a combined record of 64-31-9. He has coached 11 All-Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) selections and in the 2018-19 season his power play was ranked third in the nation, scoring on 27.4 percent of their opportunities.

While at Curry, MacDonald was responsible for recruiting, strength and conditioning, power play, video analysis, analytics, and coaching the defense.

MacDonald calls himself adaptable and knows he will need to call upon that quality throughout his career, but especially the first several years.

“The first year or two, you are given a team that you will work with,” MacDonald said. “Then as you bring in your own recruiting classes, the team will evolve.”

“Ideally, I would like to play an offensive style of hockey,” MacDonald said. “I would like us to value puck possession, to own the puck.”

MacDonald comes to UW-Stout with five total years of NCAA Division III coaching experience, spending the last four seasons as an assistant coach with the Curry College men’s hockey team. Curry is located in Milton, Mass., south of Boston.

Prior to joining Curry, MacDonald spent a year as an assistant coach at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, where he helped guide a young Leopards team to the ECAC Northeast semifinals.

MacDonald graduated from SUNY-Geneseo with a degree in Business Administration in 2007. During his time at Geneseo, the team posted a record of 67-33-11, winning the SUNYAC Championship in 2005 and 2006. Over his collegiate career, MacDonald appeared in 109 games and is among the school’s all-time leaders in goals (61) and points (120).

After graduation, MacDonald played six seasons professionally. He began his professional career in the Central Hockey League, spending one season each with the Odessa Jackalopes and New Mexico Scorpions. The following four seasons he played primarily for the Southern Professional Hockey League’s Huntsville Havoc. While there he served as the team’s captain for three seasons. In 2010 he scored the game-winning goal to give Huntsville its first ever SPHL Championship. Over his career, MacDonald appeared in 338 professional games with 213 points on 84 goals and 129 assists.

MacDonald is a native of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. He and his wife Diana have a son, Bennett.

“I see this as a really great opportunity,” MacDonald said. “I believe our student-athletes can represent Stout well both on and off the ice. I see this as a place we can be for a long time.”

MacDonald is the sixth head coach in program history.

Larry Brzeczkowski Tribute

NU Club Hockey: Remembering The Legacy of Larry Brzeczkowski

Earlier this month, former Head Coach Larry Brzeczkowski tendered his resignation to Niagara University after an illustrious 26-year career on Monte Eagle Ridge. The impact he’s made on the NU community and the several hundreds of players who have battled under his command is simply indescribable. Despite everything that he was able to build, accomplish and duplicate as the second-most winning coach in the American Collegiate Hockey Association, the affluence of character he radiates on a daily basis will forever solidify his legacy behind the bench at Dwyer Arena.

Director of Recreation and Club Sports, Derek Puff had this to say about his longtime friend and co-worker:

“We will miss Larry greatly. He bled purple for 25 years and poured his heart and soul into building the ACHA hockey program into what it is today. Words cannot express the gratitude I have for him and the work that he has done in his time at NU.”

Brzeckowski graduated from Buffalo State College with an ACHA National Championship and a scoring title in 1993. He would later parlay the success he established as a player into a program that has grown to incredible heights under his reign. It is no secret that the respect he’s garnered from players, coaches and even officials directly stems from his seemingly never-ending selfless approach to the game.

For 26 straight years, he has put the physical and mental well-being of his players at the forefront of every season. In doing so, he was able to generate a lifetime worth of memories for each and every Purple Eagle to lace up in our room.

When diving into the analytics, Larry essentially defines what it means to be a successful collegiate hockey coach. In a single career, he created a program that once rostered 13 players a night and evolved it into a premier destination for collegiate athletes hailing from all over the globe.

From 2013 through 2017, Brzeczkowski bossed the bench in 5 straight NECHL Championship games, securing 3 of them. When referencing individual game performance, he fell just 1-goal shy of securing a victory against a #1 seed in 2014 (Arizona State).

In order to take an ACHA Division 1 program to new heights, breaking into the National Tournament is a must. Brzeczkowski would accomplish this feat on 4 separate occasions in the last 7 years, alone. He would eventually break through to the semi-final round with a 7-2 victory over the Robert Morris Colonials on Thursday, March 5th, 2015.

Fast-forward to the 2019-2020 season, He would lock-up his 4th Northeast Collegiate Hockey League Championship in just 7 years. The victory punched the team another ticket to their 5th ACHA National Tournament appearance since 2013.

With all of the accolades mentioned above, none are more impressive than his 345 wins in ACHA play. He currently ranks second only to University of Rhode Island Head Coach Joe Augustine on the all-time wins list … someone he considers a great personal colleague and friendly foe.

Despite all of his on-paper accomplishments, the countless amount of victories he’s secured in the hearts of so many is what he will always be remembered for. Larry has served as a father-figure, player representative, spokesperson, role model, friend, sponsor and colleague to an infinite amount of people throughout his career with the Niagara University Purple Eagles. His philanthropic nature will live on through the charitable donations the team will continue to make on an annual basis. The most notable foundation being that of Suneel’s Light – An organization dedicated to funding the research currently being conducted to help eradicate Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy from the world.

Larry Brzeckowski bleeds purple. He is the heartbeat of our team and will go down as the single most important person to ever come through our program. The team will host a game in his honor, each and every year, beginning this season. We are currently working with Larry to determine an exact date and time.

Larry, from all of us … Thank you. We love you. You gave us everything … everything.

NYSPHSAA Announces Smithtown High School West as Spring 2020

Community Service Challenge Champions

LATHAM, NY- The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) is proud to announce the Smithtown High School West (Section XI) football team as the winner of the Spring 2020 Community Service Challenge. Smithtown West was chosen as the winning school by the NYSPHSAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which is comprised of two current student-athletes from each of the 11 member sections.

Established in the fall of 2010, the program encourages students to stay active in their communities. For the past two years, NYSPHSAA has partnered with Team Up for Community to allow online submissions. The Team Up for Community portal provides schools the opportunity to showcase community service projects which ultimately fosters young peoples’ sense of civic engagement and community thus helping them achieve their educational, developmental and social goals.

Smithtown West football coach Ron Muscarella started a program called Football Feeds Front Liners to deliver meals to front line workers in local hospitals. His players shared information on social media, due the current social distancing mandates, they cannot go to hospitals to drop off food, or go out and fund raise. Football Feeds Front Liners was created in response to the COVID-19 crisis and the effect it is having on communities, the football team partnered with Sojak Events, a local production company, to organize the project. Donations are made to help purchase meals that allow Muscarella to bring breakfast or lunch to those who are putting their own lives on the line each day to help local families stay healthy and protected. So far, more than 400 meals, most recently delivering 50 meals to Long Island Community Hospital and over $3000 has been raised.

“Thank you for recognizing the Smithtown West football program, our great district, and community we are truly honored,” said Ron Muscarella, Smithtown West head football coach. “This movement of Football Feeds Front Liners was different than any other fundraiser I have ever done. Initially, the fundraiser was a challenge to other football programs in Suffolk County but it actually grew to other sports like Basketball, Cheerleading, and Kickline. It was great to see Suffolk County football and other athletic programs come together during a time when others were in need and to help as many healthcare heroes as we could.”

“Our new varsity football coach at Smithtown West, Ron Muscarella, came in wanting to establish himself as not only a very competent varsity football coach but as a role model, community conscious minded and student centered,” said Patrick Smith Coordinator of Physical Education, Health, Athletics and Nurses for Smithtown Central School District. “This project was certainly timely, necessary and rewarding to all involved. Ron has made a positive impact already with his players and the Smithtown community in the short period of time he has been with us.”

Smithtown West will be presented a physical award and recognized for their accomplishments at later date, still to be determined.

A total of 22 projects were submitted with 771 student-athletes participating in some type of community service project. In total, $26,500 was raised for charitable causes. For the 2019-20 school year, 17,427 student-athletes participated in 439 community service projects across New York State. Vladimir Port Re-Signs With Wolves

0

The Watertown Wolves are happy to announce that Vladimir Port has agreed to re-sign with the team for next season. Port joins the Wolves for his 2nd season in the Federal Prospects Hockey League. Port quickly became a fan favorite during his first year and is ready to make a run for the Commissioners Cup this season.

“I’m very excited to be coming back to the Wolves this season,” Port said.  “Last year was a great experience but it was unfortunately cut short.”  Port posted some good numbers last season having played in 47 games and scoring 2 goals with 16 big assists for a total of 18 points. However, it’s Port’s hockey knowledge that makes him an important key to the Wolves’ success. “I’m excited to see the new structure of the team and what Coach Clarke has been building. It’s going to be a good year in Watertown.”

Wolves Owner Andreas Johansson praised Port on his return. “We are glad to have Port back here in Watertown. It was a priority. He is the perfect fit for what we are looking on and off the ice.” Andreas continued, “He is another part of the core of the defense and he is strong and has great hockey sense.”

Port will be looked to as a leader this year in the Wolves’ defensive strategy as the team works toward winning a third championship.
