(BROOKLYN, N.Y.) The completion of the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) Isobel Cup Playoffs, presented by Discover, will take place March 26-27 at Warrior Ice Arena in Brighton, Massachusetts with four teams competing for the championship live on NBCSN. These telecasts will mark the first women’s professional hockey league championship games to air on a major national network in the U.S. The announcement was made today by NWHL Commissioner Tyler Tumminia.

The Isobel Cup Playoffs, previously scheduled in February, return with enhanced health and safety protocols and enforcement, after a short hiatus due to COVID-19 cases.

“International Women’s Day is the perfect time to promote our athletes who will have the platform to make ‘HERstory’ by finishing what they started in a safe environment,” said Tumminia. “It means a great deal to our athletes to have the opportunity to compete to lift the Isobel Cup and to be supported by partners who are committed to growing the women’s game. We extend our appreciation to the Boston Bruins, NBCSN, Twitch, and our sponsors – especially Discover – for making this possible. Hockey fans will be inspired by the skill and dedication of our athletes, but we’re all especially excited about the message this sends to the young girls and boys who will be watching.”

Earlier this season, Discover Financial Services (NYSE: DFS) and the NWHL announced a landmark partnership making Discover the Official Credit Card of the NWHL. It is a significant step for the league which designates 50 percent of league wide sponsorship revenue to help increase player salaries.

“When Discover committed to the NWHL, our hope was that our support would continue the rapid growth of girls in sports, the league and the sport of hockey,” said Kate Manfred, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at Discover. “With the NWHL pushing forward with the Isobel Cup Playoffs, and the event being the first women’s professional hockey league games to air on a major national network in the U.S., we are already seeing a positive impact being made in women’s sports, and we look forward to seeing who will ultimately raise the Isobel Cup.”

The Isobel Cup Playoffs will be played with no fans in attendance at Warrior Ice Arena, which is home of the Boston Bruins training facility and home ice for the NWHL’s Boston Pride. Daily COVID-19 testing will be administered for all players and staff. The NWHL and Warrior Ice Arena will have strict health protocols in place, all guided by state health authorities and NWHL medical advisors. More information about protocols will be made available prior to the Isobel Cup Playoffs.

“Since 2016, Warrior Ice Arena has been the home of professionals, current and future, who inspire and elevate performance,” says Jay Rourke, General Manager for Warrior Ice Arena. “We are honored to be chosen to host the Isobel Cup Finals on the national stage and look forward to the excitement and energy we’re accustomed to as the home ice arena of the Boston Pride.”

On March 26, top-seeded Toronto takes on Boston in the first semifinal game at 5 p.m. EST, followed by Minnesota facing off against Connecticut. The winners compete for the Isobel Cup at 7 p.m. EST on March 27. All three games will be televised on NBCSN and streamed on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app exclusively in the U.S., and streamed via Twitch in Canada and other international markets.

“As the home of hockey in the U.S., NBC Sports is proud to showcase the NWHL to a national audience,” said Michael Perman, Vice President, Programming, NBC Sports. “These live broadcasts on NBCSN further our commitment to showcasing the game at all levels.”

As part of NBC Sports’ exclusive coverage, On Her Turf – NBC Sports’ Female Empowerment brand – will be integrated into Isobel Cup Semifinal and Final coverage on NBCSN as well as across content on NBC Sports’ social and digital channels leading up to and during the games.

The NWHL’s sixth season has seen continued growth and popularity with fans through a 140% year-over-year increase in viewership thanks to its streaming partnership with Twitch and a 304% year-over-year increase in followers. Over the course of the 15 completed games in Lake Placid, the league saw its biggest audiences ever with a total of 1.62 million live views, 14.2 million minutes watched, and the highest audience peaking at over 32,000 concurrent viewers during the thrilling matchup between the Boston Pride and the Buffalo Beauts on January 30.

No. 2 Wisconsin vs No. 7 Providence, 2 p.m.

March 18 Semifinals, 2 p.m. & 7 p.m.
March 20 Championship, 7:30 p.m.

Colgate faces fifth-seed Minnesota Duluth in a quarterfinal matchup on Monday, March 15, at 7 p.m. in Erie, Pennsylvania. Should the Raiders advance, they would play a semifinal against the winner of No. 1 Northeastern-No. 8 Robert Morris on Thursday, March 18, with the national championship game set for Saturday, March 20.

The Raiders improved to 15-6-1 after defeating St. Lawrence 3-2 in Sunday’s ECAC Hockey championship game. Coming out of the WCHA, UMD is 11-6-0 overall with an 11-5-0 conference record. The Bulldogs received an at-large bid after losing to No. 3 Ohio State 7-2 in the WCHA Final Faceoff Semifinal.

This is just the third time throughout history these two programs are facing off. Last season, the Raiders fell to the Bulldogs by a score of 3-1 in the Icebreaker Tournament.

Colgate last made the NCAA tournament during the 2017-18 season. The Raiders advanced to the national championship game before losing to No. 1 Clarkson in a 2-1 overtime decision.

From the Source
On playing UMD in the NCAA Quarterfinals, head coach Greg Fargo said, “Obviously, being the four-seed is great and we’re in a bracket with some really good teams. We are somewhat familiar with the four teams in our bracket, which is great. We’ve played all of those teams within the last year or so, so there’s some familiarity there. We had a close lost to Duluth in Buffalo last year and had a really good game against them. I expect both teams have grown since then.

“It’ll be nice to play someone different as we get ready for what’s next. Overall, we’re excited about the opportunity just to be going to the NCAA tournament, and we’re going to look to represent the ECAC in the best way we can.”

ECAC Champs!

HAMILTON – For the first time in program history, the No. 6 Colgate women’s hockey team are ECAC Hockey Tournament Champions after defeating St. Lawrence 3-2 Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Raiders are 15-6-1 overall and receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
St. Lawrence immediately pressured the Raiders’ defense, but some stellar blocked shots and saves by first-year Kayle Osborne kept the Saints off the board to start the period. At the 7:59 mark, the Saints took the lead and made it a 1-0 game.

After more defensive saves, the Raiders created a ton of offensive momentum and began to pressure the net relentlessly. With 6:57 remaining in the first period, sophomore Kaitlyn O’Donohoe caused a turnover in the left faceoff zone and scored to tie the game up at 1-1.

At the end of the first period, the Raiders were outshooting the Saints 14-8.

The second period started with a St. Lawrence hooking call at the 2:27 mark. Just 28 seconds into the power play, first-year Kalty Kaltounkova scored from the left faceoff zone to give the Raiders their first lead of the game at 2-1.

The frame was filled with penalties from both teams as Colgate finished the period with two while the Saints were in the box three times. Behind strong clears from the Raiders’ defense and key saves by Kayle Osborne, Colgate kept the Saints off the board in the second period despite two power play chances.

ECAC Champions

Colgate’s offensive pressure dominated early in the third period and just 2:50 into the frame, junior Rosy Demers skated up the left side and passed low in the slot to a waiting Sammy Smigliani who chipped it in to give the Raiders the 3-1 lead.

Soon after Colgate’s goal, the Saints scored on a breakaway opportunity to cut the Raiders’ lead to 3-2 with 13:31 remaining in regulation.

As time dwindled down, the Raiders continued to dominate possession of the puck and create opportunities in the offensive zone. The Saints tried to pull their goaltender several times, but Colgate was relentless with keeping the puck out of its defensive zone, forcing St. Lawrence to not pull their goaltender until 10 seconds left in regulation. With the extra skater, the Saints were unable to score in the closing seconds, crowning Colgate as the ECAC Hockey Champions.

COLGATE SCORING PLAYS
• Period 1 | 13:03 Sophomore Kaitlyn O’Donohoe caused a turnover in the left faceoff zone and after a deflected shot bounced off an SLU stick, first-year Kalty Kaltounkova passed it back to O’Donohoe who scored low in the slot.
• Period 2 | 2:55 Sophomore Sammy Smigliani passed out to sophomore Danielle Serdachny, who brought the puck out near the blue line and dumped it off to Kaltounkova who scored from the left faceoff zone.
• Period 3 | Junior Rosy Demers’ turnover led her to skate up the left side and dish it to Smigliani who was waiting low in the slot and chipped it in.

ECAC Champions Celebrating

FROM THE SOURCE
On winning the tournament, head coach Greg Fargo said, “I’m just so proud of this team. We really stuck with our game plan from start to finish. This is a real team that came together to play like a team tonight.

“When we started back in May and we were talking about the season ahead, we didn’t even know if we’d be playing and to their credit, we’ve just continued to control the things that we could and take one step in front of the other. When you do that, you get a team that’s as tough as these guys.”

On the unpredictability of this season, senior Coralie Larose said, “I think it just shows the work ethic on our team. Even though we didn’t know if we were going to have a season, everyone’s just battling and putting in the work over the summer. Clearly, it shows because we lucked out. We got a season. Thanks for our amazing faculty here. It’s awesome.”

UP NEXT
The Raiders earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with the selection show tonight at 9 p.m. The tournament, which is being held this year in Erie, Pa., fields eight teams with the Quarterfinals set for March 15-16. The Frozen Four takes place March 19-21.

Manhattanville Women’s Hockey Wins Second Straight

0

ELMSFORD, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women’s hockey team picked up their second-straight win against United Collegiate Hockey Conference opponent Wilkes University, Saturday, March 6. Three different Valiants scored in the 3-1 home victory and sophomore goalie Franny Gerardi (Yonkers, N.Y./Selects Academy) made 26 saves on 27 shots.

After a scoreless first period, the Valiants (2-4) got on the board just 42 seconds into the second period thanks to a power play goal from sophomore forward Morgan Miller (St. Augustine, Fla./Gilmour Academy). Junior defender Tia Martignetti (Wilmington, Mass./Boston Junior Eagles (EHF)) assisted on the play. Manhattanville then extended their lead to two less than one minute later. Senior forward Tianna Lopes (West Vancouver, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)) found the stick of senior forward Adelle Clark (Lantzville, B.C./Ontario Hockey Academy) who buried the puck into the back of net. Senior forward Taylor Ham (Saugerties, N.Y./Millbrook School) was credited with the second assist on the play.

The Colonels (0-4) notched one goal in the second to cut the Valiant lead to start the third period. The 2-1 score held for majority of the final period. Wilkes went on the power play with 2:07 left in the game and looked to tie the game and send it into overtime. The Colonels pulled their goalie to take a two-man advantage, but Manhattanville closed the door on a comeback thanks to an empty net goal from junior defender Holly Meredith (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Vermont Academy). Gerardi was credited with the assist on the final goal.

The Valiants return to the ice next weekend on Friday, March 12. They travel to Utica, N.Y., to face Nazareth College at a neutral site. Puck drop is set for 2:00 P.M.

Syracuse Women’s Hockey Edged By Robert Morris for CHA Championship

0

Syracuse lost a hard-fought battle to Robert Morris in the 2021 College Hockey America Tournament Championship game at Erie Ice Arena. The Colonials scored the only goal of the game in the first period to earn the victory. After neither team scored in the second period, Syracuse mounted a strong attack in the third period in an effort to tie the game, outshooting RMU 21-11 in the final period.

“Obviously we are disappointed, but at the same time I give Robert Morris a tremendous amount of credit,” said head coach Paul Flanagan. “They were well prepared. Anything we tried to get started offensively in the first two periods they seemed to have somebody there, whether it was blocking shots or deflecting pucks. We just did not get enough pucks on net to generate rebounds. We really got things going in the third period, we put the pressure on them, but just came up short.”

Syracuse’s Allison Small and Jessica DiGirolamo earned CHA All-Tournament Team honors for their performances. Small turned away 79 shots in three games, including 34 in a hard-fought 1-0 loss to RMU in the championship game. DiGirolamo had four points in the quarterfinal win against Lindenwood.

Syracuse closes the season with a 12-9-1 record and was 8-6-1 in the CHA.

“Our team is not the champion here tonight, but in my mind they are champions for how we got through this season with COVID,” Flanagan said. “We never had a single positive test this whole year. We were the only team in the league to do that. There are life lessons in everything. What we have gone through in the last six months, and how these kids have handled themselves, is unbelievable. Sometimes things are bigger than hockey, and what we have gone through is way bigger than hockey. I hope we are better for it – all of us.”
