OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team – which is receiving votes in both national polls – won its home- and conference-opener 2-1 against Chatham University on Friday night in the Marano Campus Center Arena. Oswego is now 3-0-0 on the year and 1-0-0 in ECAC Women’s West action while the Cougars fall in their first contest of the year.

In the second period, Jacquelin White and Alexa Aramburu controlled the puck in the neutral zone and went out on a 2-on-1 breakaway. Aramburu sent the puck ahead to White at the blue line and continued to fill in on the right side. White drew the attention of the single defender and decided to dish back for a beautiful give-and-go. Aramburu lifted the puck over the goalie’s shoulder for the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal at 9:13 of the middle period.

Earlier in the contest, with senior Kendall Appelbaum serving a two-minute penalty for hooking, Brennan Butler picked up her classmate. Butler found herself deep in the Chatham zone and stole the puck from her opponent. Two defenders tried to stifle Butler’s attempt, but the senior was able to backhand a shorthanded goal through the goaltender’s wickets at 2:11 of the opening period.

Chatham’s goal came at 4:35 of the second as Jenny Jones scored a pass from McKenzie Haskin on a dish from behind the goal and off Mariah Madrigal’s right leg.

Madrigal captured her second victory of the year in net for the Lakers, stopping 14 Cougar attempts on-goal.

The Lakers outshot Chatham 30-15 on the night and won 17 more faceoffs in the tilt (30-13). Neither team was able to capitalize on the power-play, combining to go 0-for-5.

Oswego and Chatham will meet again at 3 p.m. on Saturday in the MCC Arena to close-out the conference weekend.
