OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s ice hockey team began its 2017-18 season with a 3-1 victory over the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) All-Graduate team on Saturday night in the Marano Campus Center Arena. Oswego’s regular season will start at 7 p.m. on Saturday when it hosts Elmira College for its annual Teal Game.

After a scoreless first period, the Lakers broke onto the board at 17:20 of the middle period. Kristoffer Brun sent a pass from just inside the blue line to Tyson Bruce in front of the net. Bruce attempted to stuff the puck home a few times before Mitch Emerson swooped in front of the crease and pushed it past the CCHL goalie. The Laker 1-0 lead held into the second and final intermission.

In the third period, Oswego added an insurance goal with a power-play tally. It was the Lakers’ sixth attempt on the power play, and Michael Gillespie made it a sure thing with a rocketed goal. Again Bruce was in on the play with an assist as was AJ D’Orazio.

The Lakers scored again with less than 15 seconds left in the game. This time, it was Chris MacMillan with an empty net goal, assisted by Jody Sullivan.

Oswego was solid in net all day long, with David Richer and Cedric Hansen splitting time. Richer earned the start and played the first 31:21, making 14 saves without allowing a goal. Hansen relieved Richer for the final 28:39, only allowing one goal.

The Lakers’ penalty kill unit was on point throughout the night as well, holding the CCHL scoreless on 10 power-play chances.
