CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Ashley Lyman (Lockport/Buffalo Bisons) scored on a breakaway to break a third-period tie and senior Lizzy Marks (Penfield/Rochester Edge) added an empty-net goal as the Oswego women’s ice hockey team defeated Cortland, 4-2, in ECAC West action Sunday afternoon at Alumni Arena.

Senior Laura Drew (Andover, MA/Canterbury School) tallied both of the goals for the Red Dragons (1-2-1, 0-1-1 ECAC West). Senior Kaitlyn Ryan (Windsor/Adrian College), juniors Stephanie Heresniak (Woolwich Township, NJ/Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) and Ashley Terry (Redford/Chazy Lady Flyers) and freshman Samantha Pippin (Allen Park, MI/Team Detroit) each collected an assist. Senior goalie Deanna Meunier (Parsippany, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) made 23 saves.

Junior Kendall Appelbaum (Eden/Buffalo Bisons) added a goal and an assist and sophomore Rachel Lenard (Orchard Park/Buffalo Bisons) netted a goal for the Lakers (2-1-1, 1-0-1). Four players recorded one assist apiece. Senior goalie Tori Trovato (Fulton/Troy-Albany Ice Cats) registered 28 saves.

Appelbaum gave Oswego a 1-0 lead with 1:11 remaining in the opening period on the power play, blasting a slap shot from the point through traffic. Drew tied the game 1:05 into the second period when she deflected a pass by Heresniak past Trovato on the power play. Cortland went up, 2-1, at the 7:51 mark of the period as Drew scored on another deflection in front. Lenard sent the game to the third period tied at 2-2 on her deflection goal at 10:06.

Lyman scored the game winner at 6:17 of the third period when she converted a breakaway with a shot inside the left post. With less than four minutes remaining in the game, the Red Dragons went on the power play and were unable to capitalize. Cortland then pulled Meunier for an extra skater with 39 seconds remaining, but Marks sealed the win with a shot into the open net with 10 seconds on the clock.
