GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College senior Mac Olson (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) scored the game-winning goal 6:52 into the third period to secure a 2-1 win for the Statesmen hockey team over visiting Skidmore in a non-league game played tonight in The Cooler. Hobart improves to 6-2-1 overall this season.

The Thoroughbreds fall to 2-7-1 overall. Hobart and Skidmore will meet again tomorrow, Dec. 5, in The Cooler at 4 p.m. for another non-league contest.

The first period proved scoreless. The Statesmen were whistled for elbowing 8:16 into the period, and then 41 seconds later, were called for tripping, but Hobart’s penalty kill held strong, killing off the Skidmore power plays. During the 5-on-3, the Thoroughbred’s Anthony Bird drilled a shot off the pipe. Andreas Michailidis fired a hard shot on goal shortly after, but Statesmen senior goalie Lino Chimienti (Montreal, Quebec) denied the chance. Chimienti finished with 24 saves in 59:47 in goal.

Hobart got on the board first 2:32 into the second period. First-year Brandon Bistodeau (Rogers, Minn.) scored his first collegiate goal, when he tipped a shot by junior Nick Bingaman (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) out of midair and into the back of the net. Junior Bobby Sokol (Belle Vernon, Pa.) also earned an assist on the play. The Thoroughbreds evened the score when Marc Cibelli found the back of the net on a shot from right in front with four seconds left on a Skidmore power play. Adam Moodie earned the assist.

Olson produced his eighth goal of the season 6:52 into the third for what proved to be game winner. Olson carried the puck into the zone and played it off the boards behind the goal to senior Ben Gamache (Longlac, Ontario) who was coming down the right side. Gamache played it back to Olson, who scored on a backhanded shot.

With two minutes left in regulation, Hobart was called for two minor penalties and then 23 seconds later, the Statesmen were whistled for a five minute major. The Statesmen penalty kill held off a flurry of chances by the Thoroughbreds. With 54 seconds to go, Michailidis blasted a shot on goal that was stopped by Chimienti. Also in the final minute, Connor Pelky drilled a shot that Sokol laid out to block with his body, helping preserve the victory for Hobart.

The Statesmen finished with a 37-25 advantage in shots. Jack McDonald played all 60 minutes in goal for Skidmore and made 35 saves. Hobart finished 0-for-6 on the power play, while the Thoroughbreds were 1-for-7.
