CANTON, N.Y. – Despite being the last Division I women’s hockey team to begin its 2017-18 campaign, the No. 9 women’s hockey team look to be in midseason form as it upset No. 7 St. Lawrence, 3-1, at Appleton Arena on Friday night.

After a scoreless first period, Jaime Bourbonnais earned the first goal of the year for Cornell (1-0-0, 1-0-0 ECAC Hockey), cashing in midway through the second frame off of assists from Kristin O’Neill and Brianna Veerman on a power play to go up, 1-0.

Both teams would head into the final intermission period tied at 1-1 as St. Lawrence (2-3-2, 0-1-0 ECAC Hockey) got on the board after Kayla Vespa lit the lamp five minutes following Bourbonnais’ strike.

Madlynne Mills’ first-career goal would be an all-important one as she notched the game-winner in the third period on a power play with assists credited to Bourbonnais and Veerman to retake the lead, 2-1. Paige Lewis would put the cherry on top for the team, putting in an empty-netter with one minute remaining in the contest to solidify the 3-1 result.

Marlene Boissonnault was poised between the pipes, logging in 25 saves on the evening.

The second test of the weekend awaits the team tomorrow as Cornell faces reigning NCAA champion Clarkson at 3 p.m. at Cheel Arena.
