MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Women’s Ice Hockey team struggled to find the back of the net on Wednesday afternoon, falling 1-0 at home against the Spartans from Castleton University.

Despite a quick turnaround after playing a night game on the road last night, the Mustangs came out hot, outshooting the Spartans 12-5 in the first period. However, Castleton got on the board at 8:40 in the first period when Lisa Kilroy banged home the rebound from Aimee Briand’s initial shot.

The second period looked a little different as the Spartans matched the Mustangs offensively with both teams putting 10 shots on goal. Morrisville picked up overlapping penalties at 11:12 and 12:48 in the period but were able to prevent Castleton from scoring, killing both penalties.

The Mustangs received one of their best chances to score at the 5:23 mark in the third period when Castleton got whistled for a tripping penalty, but the Spartans’ defense tightened up.

Morrisville attempted pressure once again, pulling their goal tender with just under a minute left in the third, but they were unable to convert, ultimately falling 1-0.

The Mustangs will take on one more non-conference opponent on Tuesday, January 16 before returning to Colonial Hockey Conference action. Tuesday’s home game will feature a local rivalry game as Morrisville faces off against the Continentals from Hamilton College.
