MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville men’s hockey team scored two goals in a 57-second span with less than two minutes remaining in the third period to earn a 6-4 victory versus Cortland Friday night in SUNYAC action. With the setback, the Red Dragons fell to 0-3-1 overall and in the conference. The Mustangs improved to 1-2-2 on the season and in league play.
Senior Nick Zappia (Manlius/Kingston Voyageurs) led the Cortland offense with two goals and one assist. Juniors Michael Markowitz (Staten Island/NY Bobcats) and Michael Mascaro (Merrick/NY Apple Core) netted one goal apiece for the Red Dragons, freshmen Darren McCormick (West Seneca/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and Dan Broderick (White Plains/New York PAL Islanders) registered two assists and junior Sam Pinsler (Chicago, IL/Green Mountain Glades) Brendan Pascarella (Sloatesburg/Hartford Jr. Wolfpack) each contributed one assist. Freshman goalie Kollyn Jones (Cazenovia/New York PAL Islanders) made 22 saves.
Layne Martin and Rob Molinaro paced the Mustangs with two goals and one assist each. Darren Young registered one goal and two assists, Brad Holman scored a goal and three others each collected an assist. Goalie Steven Dombrosky turned aside 33 shots.
Morrisville took a 2-0 lead after the third period on a goal from Holman at 15:02 and a power-play score by Martin at 18:17. Cortland pulled to within 2-1 after the second period as Zappia netted his first of the night at 10:56 of the second period to set up a high-scoring third period.
Markowitz tied the game at 2-2 on the power play at 2:40 before Martin and Zappia traded goals 92 seconds apart to make it a 3-3 score. Young scored eight seconds before the midway point of the period to give the Mustangs a 4-3 lead, but Mascaro knotted the game at 4-4 just 40 seconds later. Molinaro scored the game-winner at 18:23 and added an insurance goal at 19:20 to seal the win after Cortland pulled Jones for an extra skater.
The same two teams meet again on Saturday at 7 p.m.
