HAMILTON – Junior Tyson Spink extended in point-scoring streak to six games with a goal in the third period, but Mercyhurst posted a 2-1 victory over fourth-ranked Colgate in collegiate men’s ice hockey action Saturday at Starr Rink.

The Raiders out-shot the Lakers by a 40-21 margin in the contest, but senior keeper Jimmy Sarjeant made 39 saves, including 32 stops over the final two periods, to help Mercyhurst record its first victory over a top-five opponent since joining the Division I ranks in 1999-2000.

Bottom Line

– Mercyhurst 2, No. 4/4 Colgate 1.

Won-Lost Records

– Mercyhurst evened its season mark at 3-3 with the one-goal victory.

– Colgate moved to 6-2 overall as it saw its five-game winning streak come to an end.

How It Happened

– Mercyhurst took a 1-0 lead just 3:40 into the contest when freshman Jonathan Charbonneau knocked home a rebound on a shot from sophomore Kyle Dutra at the top of the crease for his second goal of the season.

– Following a scoreless second period, the Lakers doubled their advantage to 2-0 with 16:50 elapsed in the third period. During a two-on-one break, redshirt senior Kyle Just took a shot on goal that Colgate keeper Charlie Finn stopped, but the rebound deflected off of a charging Daniel Bahntge and into the net for his first goal of the season.

– Colgate would trim its deficit in half less than a minute after the Bahntge goal. The Raiders pulled Finn for an extra attacker and were awarded when Spink put home a one-timer from senior Spiro Goulakos to make it a 2-1 contest. Senior John Lidgett was credited with a secondary assist on the goal that came at the 17:49 mark of the third period.

– That would be as close as the Colgate would get, as the Raiders would get off a three more shot attempts during the remaining 2:11 of the contest, but Sarjeant was up to the task to preserve the Lakers’ one-goal lead.
