CASTLETON, Vt. – The Manhattanville College women’s hockey team put together a strong comeback attempt late in the third period, but a late goal by Colby spoiled their chances as the Valiants fell 2-0 in the consolation round of the Rutland Herald Invitational.

Junior goaltender Olivia Drew (York, Maine/Portland Jr. Pirates) made 38 saves on the day, but was unable to shut down the attack of Colby (3-5-2 overall).

The Mules jumped ahead early in the contest, when Katie McLaughlin scored her fourth goal of the season just over six minutes into the game. After the early goal, Drew settled in nicely between the pipes, shutting down a ruthless attack from Colby that was able to force 40 shots on goal on the afternoon.

Despite the attack, Drew was able to turn away several good opportunities for the Muhls, keeping Manhattanville (3-6 overall) in the game. After putting together a few solid rushes in the second period, Manhattanville still found themselves trailing 1-0 late in the third period.

Just past the midway point of the final period, Manhattanville put together a string of great rushes, forcing Colby goaltender Angelica Crites to make several saves to keep the shutout alive. As Manhattanville seemed destined to find the back of the net, Colby was able to bury a loose puck in front of the net with 4:27 remaining in the period to put the game out of reach for good.

On the offensive end, freshman Jordan Roetzer (Buffalo, N.Y./Niagara Junior Purple Eagles) was named All-Tournament team after scoring two goals for the Valiants on Saturday. In goal, Drew finished the weekend with an impressive 77 saves in two games for Manhattanville, nearly matching her career total entering the 2015-16 season.

The Valiants will continue their travels over the winter break next weekend when they travel to Michigan to participate in the Adrian College Bruiser Bowl. Manhattanville will take on Adrian College at 7:00 P.M. in their opening matchup of the tournament.
