ORONO, Maine – Steven Swavely scored two goals, including the game-winning tally late in the third period, to lift Maine to a 3-1 victory over Colgate in collegiate men’s hockey action Friday at Alfond Arena.

In the first meeting between the two non-conference foes since the 2008-09 season, Swavely notched the game-winning goal with just 3:39 remaining in the third period, collecting a turnover deep in the Colgate zone and beating Raider keeper Charlie Finn for his fifth goal of the season.

Cam Brown added an empty-net goal with 13.5 seconds remaining to determine the final margin.

The two teams traded goals during the first period. Brett Corkey gave Colgate a 1-0 at the 9:52 mark with a slap shot from the top of the right point, only to see Swavely knot the score at 1-1 less than five minutes later with a wrist shot from the right faceoff dot.

Rob McGovern made 24 saves to earn his first win of the season for Maine. Finn finished the evening with 30 stops between the pipes for Colgate.

“Obviously this is another disappointing loss for us. I thought we played well for two periods; we just didn’t have any jam in the third. It was an unfortunate turnover in terms of the game-winning goal, but there was a lot of other stuff going on prior to that. We were back on our heels for a lot of that third period and we didn’t have anything to push back with.”
