Lakers Slip Past Statesmen

OSWEGO, N.Y.-The fifth-ranked Hobart College hockey team was defeated by sixth-ranked Oswego 4-2 at the Marano Campus Center this evening. The Statesmen are now 3-2-0 overall this season.

Four different players scored in the win for the Lakers (3-0-0). David Richer played all 60 minutes in goal for Oswego making 12 saves. Senior Tanner Shaw led the way for Hobart with a pair of assists. Junior Alexander Connal made 19 saves in 58 minutes of action, the Statesmen pulled the goalie in favor of the extra attacker with 1:24 remaining in regulation.

The Lakers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period and didn’t look back. Jody Sullivan opened the scoring at the 11:11 mark of the first period with his first goal of the season. He fired a one-timer past Connal. Josh Nenadal and Joey Scorpio were credited with assists on the goal. Ninety-five seconds later, Aaron Huffnagle made it 2-0 with a power-play goal. He wristed a shot from the low slot into the back of the net. Travis Broughman and Anthony Passero were credited with assists on the goal.

Hobart made it 2-1 on Julien Denicourt’s second goal of the season. Denicourt collected a cross-ice pass from Shaw along the blue line and fired a shot through traffic past Richer. Lawson MacDougal picked up the secondary assist on the goal.

The Lakers regained a two-goal lead with 70 seconds left in the second period, when Anthony Passero scored his third goal of the season. Derek Brown and Michael Gillespie were credited with assists on the goal.

Three minutes into the third period, Hobart cut the deficit to 3-2 on first-year Blake Coffey’s first goal of the season. He deked around a defender and flipped a shot over Richer into the goal. Coffey’s first collegiate goal was assisted by Brandon Bistodeau and Shaw.

Mitch Emerson iced the game with an empty-net goal from his own blue line. Broughman and Devin Campbell were credited with assists on the goal.

Oswego finished the game with a 23-14 edge in shots on goal. The Lakers were 1-for-4 on the power play while Hobart went 0-for-2 with the man advantage.

The Statesmen will be back in action next weekend, Nov. 16-17, when they welcome a pair of NEHC opponents to The Cooler. Hobart will take on the University of Southern Maine on Friday at 7 p.m. and New England College on Saturday at 4 p.m.
