OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team fell 3-1 against No. 2 Elmira in the regular-season finale at the Marano Campus Center Arena Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Oswego ends its season with a final record of 12-9-4 overall and 6-9-3 in the conference. Elmira finishes its regular season with a 21-3-1 overall record (16-2-0 ECACW). The Lakers also recognized their four seniors for senior day: Jayme McCreary, Bailee Goodon, Lizzy Marks and Tori Trovato.

After a scoreless first period, Oswego was nearly able to gain a one-goal edge as Andrea Noss scored on a two-on-one opportunity. The goal was called back though due to a hand pass and Elmira swung the momentum its way putting in a goal nearly a minute later. The Soaring Eagles would tack on one near the end of the second and another at the beginning to give them the 3-0 lead.

The Lakers still had fight in them though as Kendall Appelbaum scored 7:02 into the final stanza. With Oswego on the man-advantage, Alli Ullrich skated the puck into the Elmira zone, down the sideboards. The St. Louis Mo. native lost her edge, causing her to tumble to the ice, but not before she slid a nifty pass towards the slot. Appelbaum charged in to receive the puck and deflected it past the goalkeeper’s glove, cutting into the Elmira lead. The Lakers had a few more opportunities towards the end of the game, including an Olivia Ellis slapper that ricocheted off the post, but were unable to convert.

Senior Tori Trovato started her final home game for the Lakers, stopping 24 of the Soaring Eagles’ shots.

Women’s ice hockey has earned the fifth seed in the ECAC West Championship meaning the team will be on the road for its first post-season action. The Lakers will be traveling to either Buffalo State or Utica College, depending on the outcome of the contest between those two programs on Sunday.
