Nico Gonzalez’s breakaway goal with just under eight minutes remaining in the third period lifted the Buffalo Jr. Sabres over the Lindsay Muskies, 3-2, at the Northtown Center at Amherst Monday evening.
Gonzalez’s goal was unassisted and finished a play in which he took a loose and fast moving puck from just outside his own zone and raced down toward the Muskie net.
Lindsay opened the scoring 13:04 into the first period on Peter Barral’s goal. Buffalo responded with a goal by Matt Mahony, who was called up from the Buffalo Regals Jr. B squad to play, at the 14:57 mark, assisted by Gonzalez and Ryan Kuhn.
Joseph Vocino put Lindsay back in the lead with a power play goal at the 6:53 mark of the second but again Buffalo responded. This time, it was Max Mikowski’s power play goal at the 7:41 mark of the second that evened the game at 2-2.
Buffalo outshot Lindsay, 42-31. Joseph Pianta stopped 29 shots to earn the win.
The Jr. Sabres (13 wins, 3 losses, 1 overtime loss, 1 shootout loss) next host the Cobourg Cougars on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Northtown Center.
