Harris Nets Both Goals In Union’s Win Over Minnesota St.-Mankoto

SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union College women’s hockey team grabbed its third victory of the season defeating Minnesota St.-Mankato 2-1 at Messa Rink Friday night.

After a scoreless first period of play, the Dutchwomen ramped up the pressure on the Mavericks net. The fourth shot on net in the period broke the deadlock as first year forward Cheyenne Harris forced one home right in front of the net at the 15:58 mark of the second period. Senior forward Alli Devins and first year forward Haley Shugart assisted on the goal. Harris’ goal was the first of her Dutchwomen career.

The Dutchwomen took the 1-0 lead into the second intermission. Harris pushed it to 2-0 when she scored her second career goal at the 10:42 mark of the third period. The puck fell to her stick off a Caitlyn McLaren shot and Harris slotted it home beating the Maverick’s keeper in the five hole. The goal was assisted by by McLaren and Devins.

Minnesota St. cut the score in half as Lindsey Coleman squirted one past Kate Spooner to put her team on the board at the 12:16 mark of the third period. The goal was assisted by Jordan McLaughlin and Emily Antony.

A couple a penalties by the Mavericks helped the Dutchwomen close out their second victory at home. Spooner made 28 saves for her third win of the season. Union improves to 3-0 when leading after two periods of play.

Union and Minnesota St. are back at Messa tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. to finish up their two game series.
