Hamilton Women’s Hockey Tops Cortland, 3-1

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Hamilton women’s ice hockey team scored a goal in each period in earning a 3-1 victory over Cortland Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Alumni Arena.

Sophomore Stephanie Heresniak (Woolwich Township, NJ/Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) scored the goal for the Red Dragons (1-8). Freshman Ally Edwards (Buffalo/Buffalo Regals) recorded an assist. Sophomore goalie Victoria Gibson (Essex Junction, VT/Vermont Shamrocks) turned aside 35 shots.

Sophomores Kelli Mackey (Sewickley, PA/Union College), Olivia Hawes (Spring, TX/Dallas Stars) and Andrea Rockey (Morgantown, WV/Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) each netted a goal for the Continentals (5-2). Seniors Megan Ahern (Oswego/Millbrook School) and Sara Taffe (Maple Grove, MN/Benilde-St. Margaret’s School) and freshmen Michaela Giuttari (Warwick, RI/Loomis Chaffee) and Alayne Trice (Pittsburgh, PA/Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) recorded one assist apiece. Junior goalie Sam Walther (Gambrills, MD/CT Polar Bears) made 19 saves.

Mackey gave the Continentals a 1-0 lead just 1:29 into the game, scoring on a rebound in front. Heresniak tied the score at 14:58 when Walther missed on a poke check as Heresniak skated in on a partial breakaway.

Hawes scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on the power play at 11:45 of the second period, putting a wrist shot past Gibson from the right circle. Rockey added an insurance goal at 16:04 of the third period with a one-time shot in front after Trice dug the puck out of the left corner. Cortland pulled Gibson for an extra skater over the final 33 seconds but could not cut into the deficit.
