ELMIRA, N.Y. — After earning United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) Player of the Week accolades on Tuesday afternoon, Sarah Hughson ’18 of the Elmira College women’s ice hockey team has received national recognition by landing a spot on the D3hockey.com National Team of the Week.

The East Haddam, Connecticut, native was the key cog in Elmira’s lethal offense that scored three power-play goals in a 4-1 win over Oswego. Hughson scored thrice against the Lakers, two of which came on the Soaring Eagle power play. She opened the game with a power-play tally just 4:04 into regulation and followed it up with the eventual game-winning goal 3:47 later. Hughson capped off the contest with another extra-skater goal with 1:28 remaining in the third period.

Hughson’s three-goal effort was the first multi-goal performance of her collegiate career. Hughson also became the first Soaring Eagle to register a hat trick in a season-opening game since 2007-08, when former two-time AHCA All-American and 2008-09 Laura Hurd National Player of the Year Award winner Kayla Coady ’09 scored thrice against Chatham. Hughson joins Coady and Stacy Collins ’07 as the only three skaters in program history to score three goals in a season-opener.

Elmira will look for Hughson to continue her stellar start to the season this weekend, when the Purple and Gold open UCHC play with a pair of road games against first-year program King’s College (Pa.). The first of two games is scheduled to take place at the Revolution Ice Centre on Saturday, November 11, at 3:00 p.m.
