The Cortland women’s ice hockey team scored goals in the first and second periods and held off Chatham late in the third period to earn a 2-1 win in ECAC West action Friday night at Alumni Arena.
Senior Gina Tomei (Bronx/Sound Shore Warriors) and sophomore Corey Temple (Troy, MI/Ohio Flames) scored goals for the Red Dragons (3-19-2, 2-12-1 ECAC West) with sophomores Katie Gili (Brooklyn/New Jersey Rockets) and Niamh O’Connor (Paramus, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) each collecting an assist. Sophomore goalie Deanna Meunier (Parsippany, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) made 21 saves.
Freshman Jenny Jones (Kernersville, NC/Anaheim Lady Ducks) netted the goal for the Cougars (4-18-2, 3-11). Sophomores Erika Bronk (Fairport/Fairport) and Katrina Hawkins (Powell, BC/Brooks Secondary) recorded assists on the score. Junior goalie Megan Buchanan (Ottawa, ON/Rideau St. Lawrence) turned aside 30 shots.
Tomei gave Cortland a 1-0 lead at five minutes, 26 seconds of the opening period. She won a loose puck near the left boards, cut in front of the net and lifted a backhand shot over Buchanan for her fourth goal of the season. Temple made it a 2-0 game at 7:06 of the second period when she was able to knock in a loose puck on a rebound right in front.
With Cortland holding the 2-0 lead, the Red Dragons were accessed a penalty with2:25 remaining in regulation. Chatham pulled Buchanan for an extra skater with 43 seconds on the clock and capitalized with a power-play goal from Jones on a scramble in front 10 seconds later. After a Cougar timeout, Buchanan was pulled a second time with 15 seconds remaining but the Red Dragons held Chatham without a shot to clinch the 2-1 victory.
