Cortland Upends Oswego in Women’s Action

Three different players scored a goal as the Cortland women’s ice hockey team defeated Oswego, 3-1, Saturday afternoon in the second game of a two-game series in ECAC West action. The Red Dragons evened their record at 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while the Lakers fell to 2-2 and 1-1.

Senior Gwen Paul (Incline Village, NV/San Jose Sharks), junior Madison Fischl (Basking Ridge, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) and freshman Ally Miller (Potsdam/Potsdam H.S.) each netted a goal for Cortland. Juniors Kaitlyn Ryan (Windsor/Adrian College) and Katie Gili (Brooklyn/New Jersey Rockets) collected one assist apiece. Junior goalie Deanna Meunier (Parsippany, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) registered 32 saves.

Bailee Goodon scored Oswego’s goal with Brennan Butler and Lizzy Marks each chipping in with an assist. Tori Trovato started in goal, making seven saves in the first period, before giving way to Mariah Madrigal, who stopped 12 shots over the final two periods.

Fischl put Cortland on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal at 18:47 of the opening period. Paul made it a 2-0 game as she netted her second goal of the season off assists from Ryan and Gili at 15:38 of the second period shortly after the Red Dragons killed off an Oswego power play.

Miller’s unassisted goal at 5:16 of the third period gave Cortland a 3-0 lead. Goodon spoiled Meunier’s shutout bid with her goal with 3:56 remaining, 29 seconds after a Laker power play had ended.
