CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Niamh O’Connor (Paramus, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) scored with 3:35 remaining in regulation to lift the Cortland women’s ice hockey team to a 2-1 victory versus Potsdam Friday afternoon in ECAC West action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons won their fourth consecutive game, improving to 5-6-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the conference. The Bears fell to 5-9-2 and 1-8-1.
Senior Katie Gili (Brooklyn/New Jersey Rockets) also tallied a goal for Cortland. Seniors Corey Temple (Troy, MI/Ohio Flames), Maggie Corbett (Queensbury/Queensbury H.S.) and Laura Drew (Andover, MA/Canterbury School) and freshman Charlie Calamari (Barrington, IL/Chicago Fury) each collected an assist. Senior goalie Deanna Meunier (Parsippany, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) made 30 saves.
Senior Alison Greene (Massena/Norwich) netted Potsdam’s goal with senior Katie Marsman (Wantagh/Wyoming Seminary) and junior Jordan Ott (Hilton/Rochester Edge) earning assists. Junior goalie Abby Tardelli (Potsdam/North Country Ice Storm) turned aside 30 shots.
After a scoreless first period in which the Red Dragons held a 13-11 shot advantage, Gili gave Cortland the lead at 10:50 of the second period when she one-timed a rebound into the open side of the net on the right side on the power play. Greene tied the game at 1-1 just over four minutes later, tapping in a pass from Ott on the left side of the crease while the Bears skated on a two-man advantage.
O’Connor scored the game-winning goal at the 17:25 mark of the third period with a wrist shot from the slot over Tardelli’s right shoulder after Calamari started the play with a pass to Drew from Cortland’s defensive zone. Potsdam pulled Tardelli for an extra skater with 30 seconds remaining while Cortland was on a power play but could not score the game-tying goal.
The same two teams meet on Saturday at 2 p.m.
