CORTLAND, N.Y. – Five different players scored goals as the Cortland women’s ice hockey team defeated New England College, 6-2, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons evened their record at 1-1, while the Pilgrims fell to 0-2.

Senior Laura Drew (Andover, MA/Canterbury School) led Cortland with two goals. Senior Maggie Corbett (Queensbury/Queensbury H.S.) tallied one goal and one assist, and senior Katie Gili (Brooklyn/New Jersey Rockets), sophomore Emily Busta (Jackson Township, OH/Ohio Flames) and freshman Charlie Calamari (Barrington, IL/Chicago Fury) each netted a goal. Senior Kaitlyn Ryan (Windsor/Adrian College) recorded two assists, while seniors Madison Fischl (Basking Ridge, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) and Niamh O’Connor (Paramus, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) and junior Ashley Terry (Redford/Chazy Lady Flyers) chipped in with one assist apiece. Junior goalie Kelly Farinella (Marlton, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) made 12 saves.

Freshman Alexa Scribner (Falmouth, MA) tallied both of New England College’s goals with senior Morgan Braniff (Tustin, CA/Anaheim Lady Ducks) contributing an assist. Freshman Ashley Castriotta (Framingham, MA/Winchendon) started in goal, making 24 saves in 41:56 as she played the opening 25:27 and the final 16:29 of the game. Freshman goalie Lindsey Powers (Stiitsville, ON/Northwood) stopped 20 of the 21 shots she faced in 18:04.

Cortland took a 2-0 lead after the first period on Drew’s wrist shot through traffic at 4:45 and Calamari’s short-handed score at 15:47. Busta made it a 3-0 game with a shot from the right side at 3:00 of the second period before Scribner’s first goal on a one timer in front at 3:40 made it a 3-1 score. The Red Dragons closed the second period with power-play goals from Gili and Drew. Gili netted a rebound at 5:27, and Drew fired a loose puck into an empty net from the right side at 11:29.

The Pilgrims pulled to within 5-2 at 4:15 of the third period when Scribner converted a breakaway just three seconds after New England College killed off a Cortland power play. Corbett finished the scoring when she stole the puck and finished off a breakaway of her own at 18:47 for the 6-2 final.
