Cortland Blanks Canton In Women’s Hockey

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman goalie Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) turned aside 24 shots in posting her first career shutout as the Cortland women’s ice hockey team defeated SUNY Canton, 3-0, Tuesday night in NEWHL action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons improved to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the conference. The Kangaroos fell to 6-2-1 and 2-2-1.

Sophomore Jillian Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) and freshman Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) each recorded a goal and an assist for Cortland. Graduate student Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars) netted a goal, sophomore Kait Bourgeois (Cobden, ON/Ottawa Thunder) collected two assists and senior Quinn Metcalfe (Churchville/Rochester Monarchs) added an assist.

Junior goalie Sirena Alvarez (Jyvaskyla, Finland/Banff Hockey Academy) made 35 saves for Canton.

After a scoreless first period, Mia Hlasnick gave Cortland a 1-0 lead 2:51 into the second period, taking a pass in the neutral zone and converting a breakaway while on the power play.

Jillian Hlasnick made it a 2-0 score at 13:59 of the third period, gaining possession after a faceoff and scoring off a backhand in the slot. The Kangaroos pulled Alvarez for an extra skater with 2:20 to play, and Schnorr sealed the win with her team-high ninth goal of the season into the empty net after Metcalfe won a faceoff in Cortland’s defensive zone for the 3-0 final.
