Cortland And Canton Skate To A 3-3 OT Tie

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland and Canton men’s hockey teams skated to a 3-3 overtime tie in the second of two non-conference games over the weekend at Alumni Arena.

Senior Ryan Wagner (Buffalo/Aberdeen Wings) tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Red Dragons (2-3-2). Senior Sam Pinsler (Chicago, IL/Green Mountain Glades) and freshman Shane Bennett (Grand Island/Halton Ravens) also scored goals, while freshman Michael Crowley (Buffalo/Springfield Blues) recorded two assists and sophomores Dan Broderick (White Plains/New York PAL Islanders) and Darren McCormick (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and freshman Zach Felser (Sylvania, OH/Philadelphia Little Flyers) each added one assist.

Sophomore goalie Drew Weigman (Gaithersburg, MD/Northern Cyclones) started for Cortland, making seven saves in 30:57 before giving way to sophomore Kollyn Jones (Cazenovia/New York PAL Islanders), who stopped 17 of the 18 shots he faced over the final 34:03.

Junior Eric Witzel (Cumberland, ON/SUNY Oswego) registered a goal and two assists for the Kangaroos (1-6-1). Sophomores Kasey Kulczycki (Laval, QC/Kanata Stallions) and Ben Beasley (Burlington, ON/Smiths Falls Bears) netted one goal apiece and sophomore Kyle Matsumoto (Walnut, CA/Wilkes-Barre Scranton Knights) collected three assists. Freshman goalie Josh Erickson (Woodbury, MN/Kirkland Lake Gold Miners) stopped 25 shots.

Wagner gave Cortland a 1-0 lead on the power play at 12:08 of the first period with a one-time shot from the right circle that rang off the post and went in. The Kangaroos made it a 2-1 game through two periods as Witzel and Kulczycki scored on wrist shots from the left circle at 4:55 and 10:57, respectively..

Bennet tied the game 1:38 into the third period with his team-high fourth goal of the season on a wrist shot from the slot through traffic. Pinsler then gave Cortland a 3-2 lead at 5:28, scoring on a loose puck in front. Beasley sent the game into overtime at 13:24 when his sharp-angled shot from the right side eluded Jones.

Each team recorded two shots in the five-minute overtime.
