PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 8 women’s hockey team earned the elusive weekend sweep of No. 10 Providence following a 4-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at Schneider Arena. Kristin O’Neill led the charge with two goals while Maddie Mills and Diana Buckley each added in a score themselves.

Buckley got Cornell off to a hot start with a goal just two minutes and 15 seconds into the game after receiving a feed from Pippy Gerace. However, the Friars retaliated about 2 ½ minutes later to level things up at 1-1.

O’Neill gave the Big Red the lead once again midway through the first period via assists from Mills and Brianna Veerman, but Providence was resilient once again, knotting things up 7:49 into the second frame to knot it 2-2.

The game-winning goal for Cornell would ultimately come from Mills as she lit the lamp just a mere 12 seconds after being released from the penalty box. O’Neill put the exclamation point on the team’s victory, notching her second goal of the game early in the final 20 minutes to solidify the team’s four-goal effort.

Marlene Boissonnault made 23 saves to earn the win, including 13 just in the second period alone.

The Big Red returns to ECAC Hockey action this weekend for a home-and-away series with fellow conference co-leader Colgate. Cornell hosts the Raiders at Lynah Rink on Friday, Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. before traveling to Colgate for a 3 p.m. matchup on Saturday, Dec. 2.
