ITHACA, N.Y. — The women’s hockey team skated away with a 10-0 win over Carleton University of Canada on Friday night at Lynah Rink in its only exhibition game of the season.

Cornell scored four power play goals and two shorthanded goals, including a five-on-three, unassisted tally from senior Hanna Bunton to open the scoring just 3:22 into the game. Bunton picked the puck up in the Cornell zone, skated down the left wing before cutting into the middle and edged her way in front of two defenders to the bottom of the right circle for a smooth backhand over Katelyn Steele’s left shoulder. Bunton, who had a game-high eight shots on goal, would add a second goal with 5:34 to go in the first period.

Sandwiched in between Bunton’s tallies was the first of two power play goals on the night from freshman Paige Lewis, with assists on the goal going to sophomore Lenka Serdar and junior Sarah Knee.

“I thought for the most part we did a pretty good job,” head coach Dough Derraugh said. “Obviously there’s a lot of things you look at and want to get better at.”

The Big Red picked up in the second period right where it left off in the first, with senior Brianna Veerman potting a power play goal from the hash marks just 26 seconds into the frame to make it 4-0. Kristin O’Neill and co-captain Micah Hart earned the assists. Serdar made it 5-0 off a rebound near the right post and senior co-captain Kaitlin Doering scored an unassisted goal on Cornell penalty kill near the midway point of the game to put the Big Red up 6-0. Amy Curlew finished the second-period scoring rush with 1:32 to go when Erin O’Connor found her down low for a redirect.

O’Connor, who finished the game with one goal and two assists, scored Cornell’s third shorthanded goal of the night just 1:35 into the third period and Lewis added her second power play goal of the night with 3:25 left on the clock. Freshman defenseman Jaime Bourbonnais finished off the scoring for the Big Red at the 19:00 mark when she made it 10-0.

“I think it was really good. We had contribution from a lot of players, which is nice to see from the beginning,” said Bunton.

Marlène Boissonnault played 33:53 in goal and finished with four saves while senior Paula Voorheis entered the game in the second period and played 26:02, making nine saves.

Cornell, which outshot Carleton 50 to 13, received points from 14 different skaters and as a team killed off four penalties.

“Overall, I felt we got a lot of contributions from different players and obviously put up a lot of goals, which is nice to see the offensive side get going,” said Derraugh.

Cornell begins regular season play next weekend when it welcomes rival and perennial contender Mercyhurst to Lynah for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday.
