BROOKLYN, NY, May 31, 2017 – Corinne Buie isn’t about to stop now.
The only two-time winner of the Isobel Cup in the two-year history of the league is returning to the Buffalo Beauts for a run at her personal hat trick of NWHL Championships. A Cup in 2018 would actually be her fourth in four years after also winning the CWHL’s Clarkson Cup.
After signing a new contract this morning with the Beauts for the 2017-18 season, the 25-year-old forward from Edina, Minn. made it clear that there was something special about Buffalo.
“There was never a question that I was coming back to Buffalo to try and defend our Isobel Cup,” said Buie. “I’ve really settled into this city and the people around here have been so kind to me. I’m ready to see if we can keep the Cup in Buffalo.”
It would be tough to bet against Buie. To recap:
- 2015: Clarkson Cup with the Boston Blades of the CWHL
- 2016: Isobel Cup with the Boston Pride, after moving to the NWHL
- 2017: Isobel Cup with Buffalo, after signing with the Beauts in search of a bigger role
“Pretty amazing how it’s all worked out,” Buie said.
She scored 9 goals in that increased role last season in Buffalo, after getting three the year before with the Pride. Buie also scored the third goal against Boston in the Beauts’ 3-2 win in the Isobel Cup Final on March 19. In 35 games over her two seasons in the NWHL, Buie is 12-7-19.
She earned a degree in Marketing at Providence, where she played four seasons and had 44 goals and 56 assists for 100 points in 128 games.
Buie is a testament to the multi-sport athlete. She earned an athletic scholarship at Providence to play on the hockey team after four outstanding years at Edina High School, but her childhood was spent playing several other sports, including soccer, basketball and tennis.
“I didn’t play hockey year-round because I loved a lot of sports and thought it was important to cross-train and enjoy a variety of things,” she said. “It still paid off and made me very proud when I got scholarship offers.”
Buie has decided to return to the soccer pitch, at least casually. She joined an adult soccer league in Buffalo.
“Just one game a week on Wednesdays, and I’ll take it easy, so I don’t think my coaches with the Beauts will mind,” she said.
While playing for the Beauts, Buie works as a barista at the Daily Planet Coffee Company on Hertel Ave. in Buffalo. Out of appreciation for major NWHL sponsor Dunkin’ Donuts, she was a bit hesitant to share this information before being assured it was okay.
“I love working there and have made some great friends,” said Buie. “Everything about Buffalo has worked out amazingly for me, and I’m really appreciative of it. I’m glad to have another year ahead of me with the Beauts.”
