TROY, N.Y. – Junior Leah Lum scored two goals and added an assist to lead the University of Connecticut women’s hockey team to a 4-1 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday afternoon at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Huskies improve to 3-2-0 overall, while the Engineers drop to 2-5-1.

Lum (Richmond, BC/Pacific Steelers) netted the first two goals of the game, including one at 7:51 of the opening frame. She was set up on the play by freshman Briana Colangelo (Whitby, ON/Whitby Wolves) and junior Theresa Knutson (Onalaska, WI/Onalaska High School).

The same trio combined to make it 2-0 with 35 seconds left in the first, as a cross-ice feed from Colangelo found Lum streaking to the back post for her second tally. Knutson was again credited with the secondary helper.

After a scoreless second period, the Engineers drew to within 2-1, thanks to a fine individual effort from sophomore Aly Tremblay (Hayward, WI/Minnesota Revolution). Intercepting an outlet pass at the top of the left circle, she picked out the top right corner of the net for her first collegiate goal.

Knutson answered at 10:54 of the third to push the UConn lead back to two goals (3-1). Lum played the set-up role this time, finding Knutson for the one-time finish. Colangelo earned her third assist of the day on the play.

UConn added an empty-netter with 1:03 left to cap the scoring. Junior Madison Badeau (Courtice, ON/Jr. Wolves Intermediate) potted the game’s final goal from the blue line, with assists going to freshman Erica D’Errico (Concord, NH/Northern Cyclones) and senior Kelly Harris (Canton, MI/Little Caesars).

Freshman goaltender Morgan Fisher (Vernon, CT/Mid Fairfield Stars) picked her first collegiate win, stopping 21 of the 22 shots she faced, while RPI sophomore Lovisa Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Risskerien) had 31 saves.

The Engineers are idle next weekend, but return to the ice on October 28 and 29, when they host Cornell and No. 6 Colgate at the Houston Field House. UConn hosts Penn State next Friday (7pm) and Saturday (2pm).
