HANOVER, N.H. – Brad Schierhorn recorded his first career hat trick to lead No. 7 seed Dartmouth to a 3-2 overtime victory over No. 10 seed Colgate in game one of an ECAC Hockey first round series Friday at Thompson Arena.

The Big Green captain found the back of the net in the first and third periods before netting the game-winning goal in overtime to propel Dartmouth to victory and a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.

Schierhorn opened the scoring at the midway point of the first period, putting home a rebound with 10:47 gone in the opening frame to give Dartmouth the early 1-0 advantage.

Colgate rallied to take a 2-1 lead with two goals in a 4:44 span during the second period. Tylor Spink tied the contest at 1-all at the 13:20 mark, beating Dartmouth keeper James Kruger high to the glove side from left faceoff dot for his 12th goal of the season.

Emilio Audi put the Raiders in front less than five minutes later, jamming home a loose puck during a goalmouth scramble with 1:56 remaining in the middle frame for his first goal of the campaign.

Schierhorn netted his second of the evening near the midway mark of the third, knocking home a rebound from just outside the left post at the 9:02 mark to tie the game at 2-2.

In overtime, Schierhorn completed the hat trick with 10:59 elapsed in the first overtime session. A loose puck created off a blocked shot bounced to Schierhorn, who was all alone in the left faceoff circle, where he fired the puck into the cage before Colgate goaltender Charlie Finn could get in position for the game winner.

Finn made 35 saves in goal for Colgate. Kruger turned aside 20 shots between the pipes for Dartmouth.

“We had our chances, we had our looks. Clearly it was an evenly matched game. They maybe had the advantage in shots, but I thought we had some pretty quality looks as well. That’s playoff hockey. Our guy blocks it and it bounces right to their guy on the backside with a wide-open net. That’s the game.”
