Sixth-ranked Colgate battled back from an early two-goal deficit to tie Clarkson, 2-2, in ECAC men’s ice hockey action Saturday at Starr Rink.

The Golden Knights jumped out to an early 2-0 lead midway through the first period with goals from freshman Sam Vigneault and junior Christian Powers, but the Raiders trimmed their deficit in half before the end of the opening frame thanks to a goal from the stick of junior Kevin Lough.

Clarkson carried its one-goal edge into the third period, but junior Darcy Murphy buried a point-blank opportunity 12 minutes into the stanza to knot the score at 2-2.

Sophomores Charlie Finn and Ville Runola kept their respective teams in the contest as both turned in solid performances between the pipes. Finn recorded 28 saves for Colgate while Runola stopped 30 shots for Clarkson.

How It Happened

– Clarkson jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 2:47 mark of the first period when Vigneault knocked home a rebound for his second goal of the season. Fellow freshman Tyko Karjalaninen picked up an assist on the play.

– Junior Christian Powers doubled the Golden Knights margin to 2-0 with 10:23 elapsed in the opening period as he put home a rebound opportunity for first tally of the campaign. Sophomores James de Haas and A.J. Fossen were credited with assists on Powers’ goal.

– Lough trimmed the Colgate deficit in half with less than four minutes remaining in the first. Sophomore Jake Kulevich started the play as he rushed into the Golden Knights zone before sending a pass back to the top of the point, where Lough unleashed a slap shot that beat Runola high to the stick side. The goal, which came at the 16:10 mark of the frame, was Lough’s first of the season.

– After a scoreless second period, Murphy netted the equalizer at the 11:36 mark of the third period. Murphy started the play below the goal line, making a pass to senior Joe Wilson, who carried the puck from behind the net into the left faceoff circle. Wilson then played the puck towards the goal, where it found its way to a wide-open Murphy at the right post, where he calmly deposited the biscuit into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
