NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Niagara hockey members Carsen Chubak and Giancarlo Iuorio were named two of just 20 national finalists for the 2013 Premier Player of College Hockey trophy, the organization announced today.

Purple Eagle fans can vote for Iuorio and Chubak here to support the player they view as the best in college hockey!

Chubak has had a solid showing between the pipes for the Purple Eagles, helping the Niagara defense to a seventh ranking in the nation.  The 2013 Hobey Baker Award candidate currently ranks first in shutouts with six, while his 1.71 goals-against average is sixth in the nation, while his .943 save percentage slots him in fourth.  Chubak has earned five Atlantic Hockey Goalie of the Week awards this season and is a two-time AHA Goalie of the Month honoree (October and November), and has led Niagara to a No. 14/15 national ranking and an 17-2-2 conference mark.

Iuorio, who is also a Hobey Baker Award nominee, has been a two-time AHA Player of the Week honoree and November’s Player of the Month award is tied for the team lead in goals (12), while his 22 points are second best on Niagara.  For the third consecutive season he has netted 20 point, the first Purple Eagles to do so since Egor Mironov and Chris Moran achieved it during the 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 season.  The assistant captain is also only 12 points shy from joining the 100-point club that only 13 Purple Eagles have attained.

The Premier Player of College Hockey trophy is presented to the athlete the fans voted as the best in his or her sport.  A poll is release at the beginning of the sports season with a list of top athletes for fans to follow.  At mid-season, the poll is adjusted to include up to five additional highly performing athletes.  Fans then have until the end of the season to vote for the Premier Player of his or her sport.  The five athletes with the most votes are then invited to a charitable dinner where the overall winner is announced.
