Brooklyn’s Gill Scores to Tie Game

UTICA, N.Y. – Junior Katie Gili (Brooklyn/New Jersey Rockets) scored the second of Cortland’s two power-play goals with 29 seconds remaining in the second period as the Red Dragons fought back to earn a 2-2 tie at Utica in ECAC West women’s ice hockey action Sunday afternoon.

Junior Maggie Corbett (Queensbury/Queensbury H.S.) also netted a goal for Cortland (2-6-1, 1-4-1 ECAC West), while senior Abbie Adams (Potsdan/Cornwall Typhoons) and sophomore Makenzie Wright (Burlington, ON/New Jersey Rockets) each registered two assists. Junior goalie Deanna Meunier (Parsippany, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) turned aside 28 shots.

Morgan Reed tallied a goal and an assist for Utica (4-2-2, 3-2-1 ECAC West). Nicole Kieffer scored a goal, Janessa Haasbeek contributed two assists and Louise Steele-Norton chipped in with one assist. Goalie Keira Goin made 22 saves.

Reed gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead at 8:25 of the first period just as a Cortland penalty expired. Kieffer made it a 2-0 game with a two-player advantage power-play goal at 9:33 of the second period.

Corbett pulled Cortland to within 2-1 at the 13:32 mark, netting her first goal of the season on the power play just 13 seconds after Utica drew a penalty. Gili then scored the game-tying goal at 19:39 of the period, also on the power play. Wright and Adams assisted both scores.

Each team was forced to kill off three opponent power-play chances in the third period with Cortland holding off the Pioneers on the player advantage in the closing minutes. Each team recorded two shots in overtime with Meunier and Goin turning back the attempts.
