CANTON, N.Y.-Sophomore forward Anna-Rose Bertin (Marathon, Ontario/CIH Academy) scored twice as the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (6-10-2) defeated SUNY Canton (4-12-1) 4-1 on Tuesday night. Junior forward Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Rochester Edge) and sophomore forward Jaci Morr (Monroe, Mich./Team Detroit) also scored for the Bears and senior assistant Abby Tardelli (Potsdam, N.Y./North Country Ice Storm) made 31 saves.

The Kangaroos got into penalty trouble early. Canton was called for three consecutive penalties and after the Roos rang the post on a shorthanded chance, Potsdam finally made them pay. At 17:29, Bertin scored on the man advantage with helpers from Morr and senior captain Katie Marsman (Wantagh, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary). The Bears appeared to be heading into the second period killing off a penalty and up just one goal, but Ott scored a shorthander with five seconds left in the period. Senior forward Alison Greene (Massena, N.Y./Norwich University) assisted on the play.

The teams loaded up on more penalty minutes in the middle stanza. However, it was an even-strength tally from Bertin at 6:36 that made it 3-0. After failing to convert on two more power plays in a row, Canton got a power-play goal of its own at 10:38. Logan Conger scored with assists from Whitney Bernier and Margret Troiano. Less than four minutes later, Morr got her first of season, also on the man advantage. Greene and Ott recorded the assists.

Tardelli slammed the door in the third period with 17 saves. Potsdam’s penalty kill unit also continued its strong play, running out the clock on two more Kangaroo power plays.

Rebecca DiNardo started in goal for Canton and allowed all four goals on 19 shots in the first 34:26. Illie Berisha closed out the contest for the Roos, turning aside all 10 shots she faced in the last 25:34. The Bears were 2-for-7 on the power play and Canton finished 1-for-5.

The victory puts an end to Potsdam’s three-game slide and marks a season sweep of its Route 11 Rival.

The Bears host Utica College on Friday at 7 p.m. in the first game of a home-and-home series. Potsdam then heads to the Aud for a 4 p.m. showdown the following afternoon.
