CANTON, N.Y.– The SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (3-4-2) and SUNY Canton (2-3-2) battled it out to a 1-1 tie Tuesday evening. Junior forward Miranda Kolb (Watertown, N.Y./SUNY Cortland) scored the lone goal for the Bears, while junior goalie Alexa Pfeiffer (Sylvania, Ohio/Little Caesar’s) had 26 saves.

The contest was scoreless following the first two periods of play. The teams had even strength throughout the first, as the Roos outshot the Bears 7-4. Halfway through the second, sophomore defenseman Emily Burke (San Jose, Calif./San Jose Jr. Sharks) got a shot past Brooke Susac but did not score as it hit the pipe. During the second Canton edged Potsdam 10-9 in shots. Each team was 0-for-1 on the power play. The Bears got their second power play opportunity late in the second and entered the third with a man advantage.

After killing the power play, the Roos were able to get on the board, 1:15 into the third. As the puck got kicked out of Potsdam’s attacking zone, Kolb tried to get control of the puck but slipped in her defensive zone and Lily Cullen took advantage with a shot right in front of Pfeiffer, scoring stick side. At 7:15, the Bears got their fourth power play opportunity of the contest. A minute later, Kolb dumped the puck into the attacking zone where freshman forward Ellie Cleary (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) kicked it to junior defenseman Delphine Leonard (Anjou, Quebec/Dawson College Prep) who skated up the goal line, passed it along the goal crease to Kolb who tied the game back up at one. Neither team was able to score before the end of regulation and went into overtime. Before the third period ended, Potsdam was called for a penalty and entered the extra period a man down.

Canton was able to only get one shot off during the man advantage, however Pfeiffer was able to make the save. The Roos got two more shots off and did not allow the Bears a shot during the extra time, but nothing crossed the goal line and the game ended in a tie.

Canton outshot Potsdam 27-23 and Susac had 22 saves for the Roos. Canton went 0-for-3 on the power play, while Potsdam went 1-for-4.

The Bears travel down to Clinton to face Hamilton at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
