Barczewski Named AHA Rookie of the Week

Canisius freshman goaltender Jacob Barczewski has been named the Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week, league officials announced.

The honor marks the second consecutive week that Barczewski has been recognized by the AHA for his play. He was named the circuit’s Goalie of the Week on Dec. 31 following Canisius’ sweep of Holy Cross to close out the 2019 calendar year.

Barczewski was recognized after he stopped 48-of-52 shots faced in a home-and-home series versus rival RIT last weekend, helping the Golden Griffins claim four of six points from their longtime foe.

In the series opener at the Gene Polisseni Center in Rochester, Barczewski finished with 23 saves in the contest, turning aside the final 22 shots he faced in regulation and 5-on-5 overtime from the Tigers to earn Canisius a point in a 1-1 tie.

The following night, Barczewski made 25 saves in a 5-3 victory at LECOM Harborcenter. The Tigers were unable to solve him during 5-on-5 play, only finding the back of the net twice while on the power play and once with an extra attacker.

A native of O’Fallon, Mo., Barczewski has shined during Canisius’ current four-game unbeaten streak, posting a 1.33 goals against average and a .951 save percentage in 225 minutes of action. Only one of the five goals scored against Barczewski during that stretch have been recorded during 5-on-5 play.

Canisius (5-12-1, 4-7-1) begins a stretch that will see it play seven of its next eight games away from home this weekend with a two-game Atlantic Hockey series at Bentley. Start time for both games of the Jan. 10-11 series is set for 7:05 p.m. at Bentley Arena in Waltham, Mass.
