Massena Girls Varsity Ice Hockey is 7-1-1 on the season with a tie against Malone and their lone loss coming at the hands of Skaneateles.

Massena finished out the year with a 5-1 victory over Malone. Jocelyn White made 19 saves with Co-Captain Brooke Terry scoring 2 goals. Other goals coming from Assistant Captain Sophia Prentice, Jore-Lynn Jchaut and Taylin Armstrong. Assists were credited to Hailey Lashomb, Bella Cromie, Harper Oakes, Bela Drake, Karenhatironhtha Johnson and Ella Matejcik.

Earlier in December Co-Captain MacKenzie Garrow made 29 saves in the 3-3 tie with Malone. They split in their trip to Central New York with the 5-2 loss to Skaneateles and a 2-1 win over Oswego. Earlier they beat Potsdam 5-3.

Massena had to postpone their January 5 game against Alexandria/Thousand Islands and they cancelled their trip to the Plattsburgh tournament.

Oswego was handed a 2-1 loss by Potsdam on December 30 with Oswego’s Alaina diBlasi having the single goal, assisted by Mischa Palmitesso and Isabella Koproski. Goalie Chelsea Storms stopped 15 of 17 sog.

The first games of the New Year were played January 5 with Canton shutting out Potsdam 2-0; Plattsburgh 5-0 over Saranac Lake Placid and Clinton beating Ithaca 5-1.

Massena leads Section X with Malone leading in Section VII and Clinton leading in Section III.

Highlighting the girls varsity hockey news is that Clinton, reigning NYS champion, handed Skaneateles their first loss this season in Section III play.

Clinton came from behind in the third period when Kelsey Fuller dropped in the winning goal for the 3-2 victory. Skaneateles outshot the Warriors 43-19 with Laker’s Goaltender Casey Clausen making 41 saves, 20 in the third period.

Word is that Clinton is the team to beat in Section III this season,  possibly the State.

As of January 8:

Skaneateles is 2-1 overall with wins over Oswego and Massena.

Plattsburgh is 4-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the league. They beat Clinton, Beekmantown and Potsdam with a tie against NCHS of Champlain and a loss to Massena.

Potsdam is 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the league.

Oswego is 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the League.

Beekmantown, 1-3 and 0-1.

Lake Placid/Saranac Lake is 0-3 and 0-0

Taking to the ice this season, actually last season, is Section One East Girls Varsity Ice Hockey. The team traveled to Western New York for a Showcase in December. They actually began their season with that game.

In season play they won their first game 6-4.

Their Two-Year Captain Eileen Mazzaro has committed to Villanova for field hockey. We congratulate her. They also honored their Seniors recently including Mazzaro, Greta Fear, Amelia Ahrens, Stella Schlumborn, Samatha Janos, Dahlia Weinstein and Aubrey Janiello.

Wienstein is from Somers High school; Janiello, The Ursuline School; Ahrens, Rye High School and Mazzaro, Fear and Janos, Schlumborn and Janos are from Pelham High School.
