Overtime Number One went with no score and then in the second OT P.J. Abbott scored, unassisted at 5:24 and the Kenmore West Blue Devils take their first championship since 2006.

Goaltender led nation in goals against average, save percentage, and shutouts
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior goaltender Aerin Frankel (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) from Northeastern University was named the 24th recipient of the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award today as the top player in NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey.“Aerin has been the backbone of our team the past four seasons and this year has been her best,” said Dave Flint, head women’s ice hockey coach at Northeastern. “She is one of, if not the, most competitive goalies I have coached which I feel is the most important quality in a goaltender. The confidence the team has in her allows us to play the way we want to. Her numbers are off the charts and this year she has been rewriting the record books.”

Since joining the Huskies program in 2017, Frankel has been a crucial piece to Northeastern’s successes. As an alternate captain in 2020-21, she helped the team to a 22-2-1 record and a national runner-up finish. Frankel led the nation in nearly every statistical category, including goals against average (0.81), save percentage (.965), goalie winning percentage (.891) and shutouts (9).

Named Hockey East Player of the Year and Hockey East Goaltender of the Year, Frankel helped the Huskies to their fourth straight league post-season tournament title after completing the regular season as the top-ranked team in the conference. She paced the HEA in goals against average (0.65), save percentage (.971) and goalie winning percentage (.912).

In addition, Frankel twice earned Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week and Hockey East Goaltender of the Month honors and gained Hockey East Player of the Week laurels on four occasions.

Frankel was honored as the NCAA Goaltender of the Month and Women’s Hockey Commissioners Association National Goaltender of the Month in January and was also awarded the PNC Bank Three-Stars Award.

Frankel was selected as the recipient of the 2021 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award from a group of three finalists that included senior forward Daryl Watts from the University of Wisconsin and senior forward Grace Zumwinkle from the University of Minnesota.

NOTES: Frankel is the fourth goaltender to win the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, following Ann-Renee Desbiens (University of Wisconsin/2017), Jessie Vetter (University of Wisconsin/2009) and Ali Brewer (Brown University/2000) … The third Northeastern player to be named as the recipient, Frankel joined Kendall Coyne Schofield, who won in 2016, and Brooke Whitney, who took the honor in 2002 … The 2021 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award winner and the top-three finalists were chosen by a 13-person selection committee made up of NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey coaches, representatives of print and broadcast media, an at-large member and a representative of USA Hockey, the national governing body for the sport of ice hockey in the United States. Light Year For New York State Prospects In NHL Draft

0

By Warren Kozireski —

It has been a different kind of year in many ways including the inability for the most part of hockey scouts to see potential 2021 National Hockey League draft picks in person.

NHL Central Scouting typically releases a pre-season ranking and a mid-season update in January. But this year, due to the circumstances, they have only released an alphabetical list of A, B and C prospects. A signifies a potential first round selection, B rounds 2-3 and C projected at rounds 4-7.

It is a bit of a down year numbers-wise for New York State-born players with only four making the list as of March.

Huntington native Matt Coronato tops the list. Listed as a B by Central Scouting, at least one other list has him going late in the first round. The Harvard University commit is in his second season with the Chicago Steel in the United States Hockey League (USHL) where he has doubled his goal output from last season with 36 tallies in 39 games. The 5’10”, 183 lb. left wing has added 31 assists this season as well.

Fellow Long Island native (Smithtown) and Chicago Steel teammate Ryan Ufko is listed as a C prospect for the draft. The 5’10”, 181 lb. right-shot two-way defenseman had 33 points in 41 games with nine of those goals. He is committed to the University of Massachusetts next fall.

Rockville Centre product Jeremy Wilmer is also listed as a C prospect. A small, play-making center with the U.S. National Team Development Program, he stands 5’7” and 141 lb. and will surely add some weight next fall at Boston College. He has combined this season for 46 points in 50 games including 14 goals.

And Rochester (Aquinas HS) goaltender Grant Riley slots in as a C prospect. Standing 6’4” and 203 lb. already, he has split this season with Tri-City and now  Omaha in the USHL after a December trade. He is committed to Boston College, but not until 2022-23 so he’ll have another year to develop in juniors. Since the trade, he has appeared in five games with a 4.10 goals against average.

Not a New York native, but Union College commit Colin Graf is also slotted as a C prospect for the draft. The 6’0”, 170 lb. forward is skating this season with the Boston Jr. Bruins where he had 19 goals and 54 points over 42 regular season games before adding four more playoff points over three games.

As of now, the NHL Draft is slated to still take place in late June, but it is still undecided if it will be in-person or virtual. The 2020 Draft schedule for Montreal was postponed and eventually held virtually.

St. Lawrence Men’s Hockey Season Ends

0

ALBANY, N.Y. — Due to a positive COVID-19 test result within the St. Lawrence University men’s hockey Tier 1 personnel on Sunday afternoon, and in accordance with New York State and NCAA quarantine guidelines, the team will not be able to accept the ECAC Hockey automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

St. Lawrence claimed the conference title with a 3-2 overtime win over Quinnipiac on Saturday, March 20.

“I’m extremely sorry that this group has lost the opportunity to compete in the NCAA Tournament,” said Charles W. Appleton II Head Men’s Hockey Coach Brent Brekke. “It was my own test that came back positive today. The roller coaster of emotions in the last 24 hours for everyone is unimaginable. Last night we are holding the trophy above our heads and today we are shaking our heads in disbelief that the season is over. This hurts. But the one thing that can’t be taken away from this team — they are champions.”

The NCAA Tournament automatic qualifier from ECAC Hockey will now be awarded to Quinnipiac University.

Nazareth Falls To Utica College

UTICA, NY – Senior Casey Kubara and freshman Johnny Jackson each scored goals for the Nazareth College Men’s Hockey team but the Golden Flyers surrendered three goals in the first period and four more in the second to fall 7-2 at Utica Saturday night.

The Nazareth (0-9 overall, 0-9 UCHC) managed just two shots in the opening period while Utica (5-1, 5-1 UCHC) countered with three goals including a pair of power play goals.

In the second period, the Pioneers added to the lead with three goals in the first eight minutes to take a 6-0 edge.

Nazareth finally scored as Kubara took a pass from junior JT Entelisano and scored the first goal for the Golden Flyers in three games. Nazareth had suffered a pair of shutout losses and had a streak of 160 minutes without a goal snapped with the on-timer by Kubara.

In the third, Jackson netted his first career goal after intercepting a pass and putting a quick shot pass the Pioneer goalie to cut the lead to 7-2 with 12:21 left to play.

Neither team scored the rest of the game, but emotions overflowed late in the game as three players from each team were sent off the ice with penalties after a mid-ice collision that involved junior Cole Moore.

Sophomore Gage Roberts started for Nazareth in goal and made 15 saves before freshman Raphael Provenchertook over for the final 28 minutes and made 15 saves without allowing a goal.

Nazareth will close out the regular season with a home game at 2 p.m. Saturday against Stevenson.
