Chubak Named Goalie of Week

0

HAVERHILL, Mass. – For the second time this season junior Carsen Chubak was named Atlantic Hockey Association Goalie of the Week after making 67 stops during the two-game set against ECAC opponent Clarkson this past weekend.

The junior pushed aside a career-high 44 shots in the 2-0 win on Friday, for his first shutout victory of his career.  Chubak added another 23 stops in the 4-4 draw the following day after that included two in extra time.  The Prince Albert, Sask. native took over goaltending duties about midway through the first period, allowing only one goal in 57.24 minutes of play.

Chubak is 2-1-3 so far this season, making 194 saves for a 1.64 goals-against average and .951 save percentage.

Chubak and the Purple Eagles will jump back into conference play against the UConn Huskies on Friday, Nov. 2 and Saturday, Nov. 3.  Faceoff for both contests are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from Dwyer Arena.

Canisius Take Loss from Minnesota

0

Minneapolis, Minn. – A tally 12 seconds into the game was the only score as the second-ranked Minnesota Gophers edged the Canisius College hockey team on Sunday afternoon, 1-0, in front of 7,876 fans at Mariucci Arena. The loss drops the Griffs 1-4-1 on the season with the nationally-ranked Gophers improving to 4-1-0.

Minnesota earned the one-goal victory despite a strong effort from junior netminder Tony Capobianco (Mississauga, Ontario). The junior finished the contest with 41 saves on the night to keep the Griffs within striking distance of the No. 2 Gophers.

“We played hard and smart hockey today and gave ourselves a chance to win the in the end,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. “If their goalie doesn’t make two great saves in the last minute, we go into overtime against a very good Minnesota team. It is important that we take today’s effort into next weekend’s games and into conference play.”

The Gophers wasted no time finding the back of the net, striking just 12 seconds into the contest. A pass through the slot from Jake Parenteau found Kyle Rau open at the top of the face-off circle and the sophomore buried his chance for the early 1-0 Minnesota advantage.

That was all the offense that nationally-ranked Minnesota would get and all that they would need as the 1-0 score held until the final horn. Canisius had a couple of great chances late but could not get the puck past Adam Wilcox. With just under five minutes remaining in regulation, junior Kyle Gibbons (Westlake, Ohio) got a step on the Gopher defense and lunged toward the puck but his deflection was not strong enough to find the back of the net. Then, sophomore Tyler Wiseman (Burlington, Ontario)gained possession of the puck in a scrum in front of the net with just 30 seconds left but could not tally the equalizer nor could the Griff net the rebound as Minnesota held on for the 1-0 win.

The Gophers finished the contest with a 42-20 advantage in shots with neither team scoring on the power play in two chances. Wilcox stopped all 20 shots he saw to earn the shutout victory.

Canisius continues non-conference play next weekend with a pair of games against Clarkson. The Griffs welcome the Golden Knights to the Buffalo State Sports Arena with the series beginning on Saturday at 3:05 p.m.

Game Notes: Minnesota is the highest ranked team the Griffs have faced since squaring off with No. 1 Miami on Nov. 24, 2007 … The Griffs are now 3-21-2 all-time against nationally-ranked schools … Canisius now ranks sixth nationally with a scoring defense of 1.67 … Capobianco owns a goals against average of 1.78 this season with a save percentage of .944 … Capobianco recorded 40 saves in a game for the fourth time in his career and for the first time since stopping a career-best 45 against Air Force on Oct. 29, 2011 … The schools were meeting for the first time … Canisius is now 0-10-2 all-time against WCHA schools.

Oswego Men Bounce Back; Beat Elmira

0

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s ice hockey team (2-0-0) bounced back from Friday night’s slow start by scoring five goals in the first period en route to a 9-0 win over Elmira (0-1-0) Saturday night at the Campus Center Ice Arena. The line of Luke MoodiePaul Rodrigues, and Jon Whitelaw accounted for a large portion of the scoring with the trio tallying six goals and six assists.

The shutout marked the second straight game that the Lakers have kept the Soaring Eagles off the scoreboard, as Oswego State blanked Elmira, 5-0, in last year’s NCAA quarterfinal contest.

Both squads got a feel for each other during the first half of the opening period until Elmira gained a 5-on-3 advantage for just over a minute following a pair of Laker infractions. Right after Oswego State returned one of those players to the ice, Zach Josepher (Sr., Wantagh, N.Y.) gained control of the puck in the defensive zone and hit Matt Singleton (Sr., Whitby, Ontario) with a pass at neutral ice as he was coming off the bench. He skated in alone on Elmira netminder Darren McDonald for the backhanded goal on the glove side at 9:54.

Less than two minutes later, the Lakers made it 2-0 when they capitalized on a defenseman who lost his stick and the Soaring Eagles could not clear the zone. Nick Rivait (So., Kingsville, Ontario) sent a pass from the right point toLuke Moodie (Sr., Oakville, Ontario) at the right dot where the puck was sent through traffic to Paul Rodrigues (Sr., Etobicoke, Ontario), who was camped out back door on the left pipe.

It became a three-goal contest when Tyler Leimbrock (Sr., Bolton, Ontario) tapped in a pass from Chris Muise (Sr., Oakville, Ontario) on the subsequent draw at 12:28. The marker prompted Elmira to call timeout and pull McDonald in favor of Matt Milne.

Oswego State went on the power play again at 13:20 after a charging penalty, and the Lakers made the visitors pay under a minute later. Moodie put a shot on goal with players from both sides charging the net. Milne was in position to make the save, but the puck trickled through his legs for Rodrigues to bury it in the empty goal. Jon Whitelaw(Sr., Huntsville, Ontario) also received an assist on the play.

Rodrigues completed the hat trick by putting away a rebound from Jon Whitelaw‘s stick, while Rivait tallied his second assist of the night at 16:54 to make it 5-0 at the end of one.

The scoring continued in the second as Moodie flipped the water bottle off of Elmira’s net with a wrist shot over Milne, who dove to the ice in an effort to poke the puck away. Rodrigues drew two defensemen on the play to hit Moodie near the blue line with the open look. Tim Carr (Sr., Burlington, Ontario) earned an assist as well.

It was not all about the Laker offense, though, as Jesse McConney (Sr., Barrie, Ontario) kept the shutout bid alive by diving in front of the goal to prevent an Elmira shot from going into the net after Andrew Hare (Sr., Burlington, Ontario) was pulled out of the net. The score remained 6-0 going into the final frame.

Moodie registered his second maker of the game when he clanged a shot off the right pipe that bounced off of Milne’s back across the goal line at 7:31, resulting in another goaltender change as Ryan deMelo replaced Milne.

Tyler Leimbrock added a top shelf glove side goal on the first shot deMelo faced in the contest at 8:06 after receiving a series of passes Chris Muise (Sr., Oakville, Ontario) and Josepher. Rodrigues capped off his performance with his fourth goal of the game at 9:22 when his shot in the slot bounced off of deMelo’s glove for Oswego State’s ninth marker. Assists went to Whitelaw and Taylor Farris (Sr., Oakville, Ontario).

Hare earned his sixth career shutout with 26 saves, while the Laker penalty kill also played a role in the shutout by forcing Elmira to go 0-for-7 with the extra skater. The trio of Soaring Eagle goalies compiled 43 saves.

Oswego State faces its first road test of the year next weekend when it travels to Brockport for a 7 p.m. tilt.

NU Men Tie Knights

0

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Niagara men’s hockey team battled back from a first period three-goal deficit to come out with a 4-4 draw against the Clarkson Golden Knights on Saturday evening at Cheel Arena.

After finding the tying goal in the final minutes of the second period, the Purple Eagles (2-2-3) held onto a 4-3 lead for four minutes of the third period before the Golden Knights (0-4-1) tallied the equalizer to send the contest into extra time.  The teams traded opportunities, with Niagara outshooting Clarkson by a 4-2 margin, but neither the Purps or Golden Knights could find the back of the net.

“Coming up to the north country is historically one of the toughest trips in college hockey,” head coach David Burkholder said.  “For us to get three out of four points on the road is a real testament to the warriors in the locker room.”

With 1:14 remaining on an early third period powerplay, Chris Lochner found the back of the net for the third time this season to give the Purple Eagles their first lead in game that saw little five-on-five action.  With 17:27 remaining on the clock, Patrick Divjak ripped a shot from just inside blueline that was saved by Greg Lewis, but Lochner was waiting on the doorstep to snap home the rebound to make it 4-3.

Clarkson found the equalizer about four minutes later, as James Howden saw his long shot to the right of Carsen Chubak zip past the shoulder of the NU goaltender to even the game at four apiece with 13:29 left in the game.

“We preserved through considering we lost some key guys to penalties,” Burkholder added.  “We had four playing defense and had a goalie come off the bench that did a great job for us.  Certainly a tie isn’t a great feeling, but this one feels totally different.”

The powerplay units of either team were on point in the opening 20 minutes of play as five powerplay goals were tallied, with Clarkson coming out with the 3-2 lead heading into intermission.

All three Golden Knight goals came in less than a two minute span during a five minute powerplay opportunity.  Joe Zarbo started off the scoring at the 13:43 mark.  With a 1:54 left on the man-advantage, Zarbo wristed a top shelf lazer from the left circle that beat NU goaltender Cody Campbell.  One minute later, Patrick Marsh fired a shot from the slot that went wide, but bounced to the stick of Pat Megannet for the easy tap in to make it a two-goal game.

With 36 seconds left on the five-minute major, Sam Labrecque tallied his second of the game to give the Golden Knights a three-goal cushion with a top shelf tally.

The Purple Eagles bounced back with their own pair of powerplay markers as Ryan Murphy netted goals one and two of the season.  With 7:45 on the clock and playing a man up, Kevin Ryan let a shot go from just inside the blue line that was initially saved by Clarkson keeper Greg Lewis, but Murphy capitalized on the rebound to make it 3-1.

Murphy cashed in again on the man advantage with less than four minutes left in the opening period as the left winger knocked down a high shot from Dan Weiss that snuck behind Lewis two cut the Golden Knight’s lead to one goal.

The Purple Eagles started the second period with a little over four minutes remaining on the five-minute powerplay, attempting eight looks on net.  Just as the penalty on Nik Pokulok expired, Matt Chiarantano kept in a clear attempt that he fired back towards traffic. Rocky Gruttadauria got a piece of it, before Mike Benedict tapped home the equalizer for second goal of the season.

Niagara killed off another Clarkson five minute man-advantage to head into the final period of play knotted at three.  Chubak, who took over goaltending duties in the first period, had to make seven saves, while Lewis grabbed hold of nine NU shots.  After two periods of play, the shot count was 21-17 in favor of the Golden Knights.

Campbell made six saves before Chubak replaced him, to push aside 23 Golden Knight shots.

Niagara continues conference action next weekend when the Purple Eagles return to Dwyer Arena to host the Connecticut Huskies on Friday, Nov. 2 and Saturday, Nov. 3.

Bears Beat Mustangs

0

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team (2-0, 1-0 SUNYAC) got a
big games from multiple players to roll past Morrisville State (0-2, 0-1)
9-5 in its SUNYAC opener on Saturday night at Massena Arena. Sophomore
forward Trevor Cope (Swartz Creek, Mich./Atlanta Jr. Knights) recorded six
assists, senior captain Matt Viola (Toronto, Ontario/Vaughan Vipers) had a
five-point night (2-3-5),  junior assistant captain Mike Arnold (Didsbury,
Alberta/Kingston Voyageurs) had a hat trick and junior forward Adam Place
(Scarborough, Ontario/Bowmansville Eagles) chipped in two goals for
Potsdam.

The scoring started just 32 seconds into the game as Viola found Place to
put Potsdam up 1-0. Just over a minute later, senior forward Rafal Plonski
(Warsaw, Poland/Puget Sound Tomahawks) greeted Bears freshman goalie Jon
Hall (Dexter, N.Y./Stouffville Spirit) rudely, tying the game at 1-1.
Forty-one seconds later, junior forward Mike Dolman (Hawthorne,
N.J./Neumann Knights) buried his own rebound to give the Mustangs a 2-1
advantage. Hall was injured on the play and junior transfer Shane Talarico
(Greensburg, Pa./Elmira College) took over. Morrisville sophomore forward
Matthew Beer (Corunna, Ontario/Estvan Bruins) immediately tested Talarico,
who shut him down on a breakaway. The save settled the Bears and they
responded offensively. At 10:33, Cope and freshman forward Billy Pascalli
(Deer Park, N.Y./New York Bobcats) set up Arnold for the equalizer on the
power play. Two minutes later, junior assistant captain Nick Avgerinos
(Bolton, Ontario/Georgetown Raiders) fed Viola at the right side of the
net for another man-advantage score and a 3-2 Potsdam lead. At 14:17,
Plonski netted his second of the night to tie the score again with helpers
from junior forward Kevin Gaughran (Pawling, N.Y./Manhattanville College)
and junior defenseman James Jarvis (Pickering, Ontario/Whitby Fury). Just
58 seconds later, sophomore defenseman Dan McCamey (Dayton, Ohio/Minnesota
Flying Aces) dumped a long shot on goal and the puck skipped past Mustang
freshman goalie Jakob Rasmussen (Vallentuna, Sweden/National Sports
Academy) for a 4-3 lead.

Offense was the story in the second period as well. Midway through the
middle stanza, Cope found Arnold for his second of the game. Two minutes
later, sophomore forward Ryan Miller (Didsbury, Alberta/Arizona State) and
Cope sent the puck into the right corner of the Morrisville zone to
freshman forward Jake Rivera (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Hartford
Wolfpack). Rivera fired the puck off the back of Rasmussen and into the
goal for a 6-3 Bears lead. After the goal junior goalie Christopher Azzano
replaced Rasmussen. At 14:55, the Mustangs answered as Beer picked the
puck off the stick of Potsdam defenseman, went the distance and roofed it
over Talarico.

Morrisville closed the gap to 6-5 as Dolman scored his second on assists
from Gaughran and junior forward Jamie Nelson (Stratford,
Ontario/Stratford Cullitons) 1:33 into the final period. The Mustangs had
several chances to tie the contest after the goal, but didn’t get any
closer. Potsdam finally put the game away with three straight power-play
goals over the final five minutes of the contest. Viola tallied his second
of the night at 15:45 with assists from Cope and senior captain Brett
Waters (Uxbridge, Ontario/Markham Waxers). Forty-four seconds later,
Arnold completed his hat trick with assists from Cope and Viola. Place
capped the scoring a minute later as Cope and Viola recorded the assists.

In goal, Talarico stopped 33 shots for his first collegiate victory.
Rasmussen was tagged for the loss, allowing six goals and making 19 saves
in the first 32:03. Azzano allowed two goals and stopped 11 shots in the
next 24:36 and sophomore Zak McMichael (Bancroft, Ontario/Campbellton
Tigers) made three saves and allowed a goal in the final 3:31.

Potsdam outshot Morrisville 42-39. The Bears were 5-13 on the power play
and the Mustangs went 1-4. The victory was the eighth for Potsdam in the
teams’ 12 meetings and gives Potsdam a 2-0 start for the first time in 10
seasons.

The Bears are back in action at Massena Arena next Saturday, Nov. 3 when
they host the Plattsburgh State Cardinals.

0

NEWPORT, R.I.—The SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (0-1) rallied from a
2-0 third period deficit, but fell 3-2 in overtime in its season opener at
Salve Regina University (2-0). Freshmen forwards Sarah Nelson (Highlands

Honda) each scored their first collegiate goal for Potsdam and junior
goalie Dawna Salvarinas (Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) finished
with 38 saves.

The Seahawks dominated the first period and jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
Danielle Phalon opened the scoring on a shot from the slot at 9:32.
Cheyenne Boyd recorded the assist. Five minutes later Rachel Porter made
it a two-goal game on a one-timer with assists from Sarah Markey and

stanza.

Potsdam outplayed the Seahawks in the second period and killed two

but still trailed 2-0 after 40 minutes.

Grefke finally got the Bears on the board at 6:20 of the third period,
beating Muelbronner with a high wrist shot. Sophomore forward Emilee
Hazelden (Bloomingdale, N.Y./Northwood School) and freshman forward Sally
Mooney (New Albany, Ohio/Wyoming Seminary) assisted on the goal. Four
minutes later Nelson struck to tie the game with assists from freshmen

Marsman (Wantagh, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary). Potsdam was unable to net the
decisive marker in regulation.

In overtime, the Bears were called for a checking penalty and the Seahawks
fired eight shots on Salvarinas before surrendering the game-winner. Sarah
McClusker scored with a high shot just 1:43 into the extra period with an
assist from Porter.

Muehlbronner stopped 21 shots to earn the victory. The Seahawks outshot
Potsdam 41-23. The Bears were 0-1 on the man-advantage and Salve Regina
was 1-9.

“We came out sluggish, but as the game wore on we gained momentum,” said
Potsdam Head Coach Jay Green. “We had a great third period to tie it up.
It wasn’t a great outing overall, but the last five minutes was the team
of old that we saw last year. We have a lot of small details to improve
upon. If we had played better start to finish we could have had a better
outcome.”

The Bears look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon at Division I Holy Cross.
The puck drops at 1 p.m.

Canisius Ties Air Force In Atlantic Hockey Play

0

The Canisius College hockey opened Atlantic Hockey play with a 1-1 tie against Air Force on Thursday night. The Griffs are now 1-3-1 on the season, while the Falcons are 0-2-3.

“It was a total team effort from us today,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. “We had a lot of good offensive chances tonight but their goalie played well. I like our game from our goaltending on out and I’m real happy with our physical play and strong skating.”

Junior Taylor Law (Markham, Ontario) scored the Griffs’ lone goal of the night with junior netminder Tony Capobianco (Mississauga, Ontario) anchoring the Canisius defense with 17 saves.

Air Force netted the game’s first goal, scoring 11:01 into the contest. After a Canisius turnover in its own zone, Cole Gunner gained possession behind the net and found Kyle DeLaurell open in the slot. DeLaurell then finished high for the 1-0 Falcons advantage.

Law would equalize for the Griffs, tallying his first goal of the season with 4:02 remaining in the second frame. Sophomore Braeden Rigney (Singhampton, Ontario) fired a shot on net from the blue line and junior Ryan Bohrer (West St. Paul, Minn.) tipped the rebound back to Law. The junior then buried his attempt to knot the contest at one.

Minutes later, the Griffs were whistled for a five-minute major penalty but the Canisius defense stepped up big. On a power play that spanned the end of the second frame and the start of the third, Air Force was held scoreless and could only muster three shots on net during the five-minute stretch.

With the game deadlocked at one, the Griffs had the better of the chances in the third and overtime periods. Hunter Cooke drafted by the Bears

0

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team has drafted Hunter Cooke
to be an honorary Bear for the 2012-13 season. Potsdam has joined with
Team IMPACT to welcome Cooke into its family.

Cooke, a 10-year old Hogansburg resident with cystic fibrosis, met Coach
Chris Bernard and Bears Brett Waters, Mike Arnold, Vinny Buttitta, Max
Fogel and Ken Simon on Oct. 19, at Maxcy Hall. He talked hockey and video
games with the players, watched a highlight video and was interviewed by
Voice of the Bears Chris Engel. Like Simon, who is a Massachusetts native,
Cooke is a fan of the Boston Bruins.

After the introductions, the new Bear signed his team contract where he
agreed to be a good citizen, a good son and brother, work hard in school
and represent his team in a positive way. The Bears then presented him
with his own Potsdam jersey. Throughout the season, Cooke will attend
Potsdam practices and home games and visit the Bears in their locker room.

“We are really excited about the opportunity to develop a relationship
with Hunter and his family,” said Bernard. “We want to be there to support
them anyway they deem necessary or important to continue to help him reach
his goals for improved health and improved quality of life in general.”

Team IMPACT’s mission is to improve the quality of life for children
facing adverse issues and events by establishing and expanding vibrant
team-based support networks.
The group endeavors to continually encourage a wide range of team-based
