In the third period, Hausberger cut the lead to 3-2 at 2:26 with a power-play goal when her slap shot was initially stopped by Stephens but trickled over the goal line. Jensen, however, added an insurance goal at 14:04 to complete the scoring.

Canisius Ties Air Force In Atlantic Hockey Play

0

The Canisius College hockey opened Atlantic Hockey play with a 1-1 tie against Air Force on Thursday night. The Griffs are now 1-3-1 on the season, while the Falcons are 0-2-3.

“It was a total team effort from us today,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. “We had a lot of good offensive chances tonight but their goalie played well. I like our game from our goaltending on out and I’m real happy with our physical play and strong skating.”

Junior Taylor Law (Markham, Ontario) scored the Griffs’ lone goal of the night with junior netminder Tony Capobianco (Mississauga, Ontario) anchoring the Canisius defense with 17 saves.

Air Force netted the game’s first goal, scoring 11:01 into the contest. After a Canisius turnover in its own zone, Cole Gunner gained possession behind the net and found Kyle DeLaurell open in the slot. DeLaurell then finished high for the 1-0 Falcons advantage.

Law would equalize for the Griffs, tallying his first goal of the season with 4:02 remaining in the second frame. Sophomore Braeden Rigney (Singhampton, Ontario) fired a shot on net from the blue line and junior Ryan Bohrer (West St. Paul, Minn.) tipped the rebound back to Law. The junior then buried his attempt to knot the contest at one.

Minutes later, the Griffs were whistled for a five-minute major penalty but the Canisius defense stepped up big. On a power play that spanned the end of the second frame and the start of the third, Air Force was held scoreless and could only muster three shots on net during the five-minute stretch.

With the game deadlocked at one, the Griffs had the better of the chances in the third and overtime periods. Sophomore Mitch McCrank (Haileybury, Ontario)fired a shot on net from an open position in the right face-off circle with just under five minutes remaining in regulation but Air Force’s Jason Torf kept the game tied with a right-pad save. In the extra session, sophomore Tyler Wiseman (Burlington, Ontario) tipped a shot on net but Torf was there once again to earn the tie for the Falcons, recording his 30th and final save of the night.

Canisius finished the game with a 31-18 advantage in shots. Neither team scored on the power play with the Griffs going 0-for-2 with the extra-man advantage and killing all three Air Force power plays.

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team has drafted Hunter Cooke
to be an honorary Bear for the 2012-13 season. Potsdam has joined with
Team IMPACT to welcome Cooke into its family.

Cooke, a 10-year old Hogansburg resident with cystic fibrosis, met Coach
Chris Bernard and Bears Brett Waters, Mike Arnold, Vinny Buttitta, Max
Fogel and Ken Simon on Oct. 19, at Maxcy Hall. He talked hockey and video
games with the players, watched a highlight video and was interviewed by
Voice of the Bears Chris Engel. Like Simon, who is a Massachusetts native,
Cooke is a fan of the Boston Bruins.

After the introductions, the new Bear signed his team contract where he
agreed to be a good citizen, a good son and brother, work hard in school
and represent his team in a positive way. The Bears then presented him
with his own Potsdam jersey. Throughout the season, Cooke will attend
Potsdam practices and home games and visit the Bears in their locker room.

“We are really excited about the opportunity to develop a relationship
with Hunter and his family,” said Bernard. “We want to be there to support
them anyway they deem necessary or important to continue to help him reach
his goals for improved health and improved quality of life in general.”

Team IMPACT’s mission is to improve the quality of life for children
facing adverse issues and events by establishing and expanding vibrant
team-based support networks.
The group endeavors to continually encourage a wide range of team-based
organizations like the Bears to open up their ranks and extend their

The Purple Eagles Double Up Clarkson

0

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Niagara men’s hockey team blanked the Clarkson Golden Knights for the 2-0 victory on Friday evening at Cheel Arena in the first game of the two-set series.
Special teams was the difference in the win over the Golden Knights (0-4-0), as the Purple Eagles (2-2-2) got a powerplay score from Dan Kolenda, while the penalty killing unit killed off five man-disadvantages, including 1:40 worth of 5-on-3 action in the second period.  Dan Weiss was a rock in the defensive end, make several key blocks while a man down.

“I was really pleased with our five-on-five play tonight,” head coach Dave Burkholder said.  “We took it to them for a lot of the game, but I’m more impressed with our penalty kill.  We spent a lot of time in the penalty box, but I thought the guys were blocking shots left and right.  I think we had a season-high in blocked shots, guys selling out to keep the zero on the Clarkson side.  It was just a very spirited road effort especially after what happened last weekend.”

NU also received a score from senior Marc Zanette, while Patrick DivjakKevin RyanRyan Murphy and Giancarlo Iuorio added helpers.

Carsen Chubak made a career-high 44 saves against the Golden Knights, including 19 in the final period, for his first shutout victory of his career.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes of play, the Purple Eagles capitalized on their first powerplay opportunity of the game at the 11:46 mark of the second period.  Divjak shot the puck wide of Lewis and it bounced out to Kolenda who swatted it on net.  Lewis made the initial save, but the puck dropped behind him and eventually pushed inside his own net giving Niagara the 1-0 lead.

Heading into the second intermission, Clarkson held a 25-16 advantage in shots.

After killing off the remainder of a penalty whistled at the end of the second period, the NU offense combined for its second goal of the contest.  Zanette gave Niagara the two-goal lead a little over three minutes into the final period of play, tallying his first goal of the season with 16:53 on the clock.  Iuorio slipped a pass to Zanette from the left corner, who fired a shot from a bad angle over the right shoulder of Lewis.

The Golden Knights amped up the pressure after going down 2-0, registering 19 shots, but the NU defense remained steadfast not giving Carkson the opportunity to stage a comeback.  not enough to stage a comeback against the Purps.

Oswego Men Earn Win Over Cortland

0

OSWEGO, N.Y. – After falling into an early two-goal hole, the Oswego State men’s ice hockey team (1-0-0, 1-0-0 SUNYAC) fought back to earn a 7-4 win over Cortland (0-1-0, 0-1-0 SUNYAC) on Friday in the season opener for both squads. Seven different Lakers from three separate lines scored for a balanced Oswego State offensive attack, as Chris AyotteLuke Moodie and Jon Whitelaw each finished with one goal and two assists.

The first period provided enough entertainment for an entire contest, as the teams combined to post five goals in the stanza.

Tyler Leimbrock (Sr., Bolton, Ontario) nearly opened the scoring for Oswego State 2:50 into the contest, but the goal was waved off by the officials due to the net becoming dislodged. On the ensuing shift, Cortland skated down the length of the rink, and Ryan Wagner pounced on a rebound left in front of the net. A.J. Moyer earned an assist on the play.

With both squads skating 4-on-4 minutes later, Moyer capitalized on a Laker defensive miscue when his shot from the right face-off circle went just inside the far post at the 5:26 mark. The goal prompted head coach Ed Gosek to switch goaltenders after Andrew Hare (Sr., Burlington, Ontario) made one save on three shots.

Luke Moodie (Sr., Oakville, Ontario) got the Lakers back into the game when his shot from the slot made it a one-goal contest 15 seconds into a Cortland slashing penalty. A series of tic-tac-toe passes from Jon Whitelaw (Sr., Huntsville, Ontario) and Chris Ayotte (Sr., Cornwall, Ontario) led to the opening for Moodie at 8:24.

Later in the frame, Paul Rodrigues (Sr., Etobicoke, Ontario) carried the puck into the zone with Whitelaw on the other side of the ice. Rodrigues held on to the puck long enough to draw the defenseman, as he slid the puck to Whitelaw for the goal to tie the game at 15:34.

However, the scoring was not finished for the period as a Cortland highsticking penalty led to a Jesse McConney(Sr., Barrie, Ontario) goal with three minutes to play. Rodrigues fed Whitelaw the puck from behind the goal, who in turn hit McConney with the pass at the center of the blue line. His shot clanged off the left pipe into the net to give the Lakers a 3-2 lead heading into intermission.

Oswego State doubled its lead six minutes into the second period when Zach Josepher (Sr., Wantagh, N.Y.) hustled through the neutral zone to create an odd-man rush for the home team. He was rewarded for his efforts when he wristed a shot into the upper left 90 of the goal. Moodie and Matt Singleton (Sr., Whitby, Ont.) were credited with assists on the play.

Cortland pulled back to within one following a Moyer power-play goal 14 minutes into the stanza, but Ayotte notched his first goal of the season after receiving a pass from Kyle Badham (Jr., Oakville, Ontario) to make the score 5-3 at intermission.

The Red Dragons were not done yet, though, as sloppy play by the Lakers in the defensive zone led to a goal by Michael Lysyj eight minutes into the final period. Later in the frame, Cortland was forced to call timeout at 12:43 when the Red Dragons iced the puck after a long defensive shift in an effort to let the players on the ice catch their breath. The play backfired as Tim Carr‘s (Sr., Burlington, Ontario) slap shot from the left point made its way through traffic after Ayotte won the ensuing draw. Assistant captain Chris Brown (Sr., Centreville, Ontario) added a shorthanded, empty net goal with 1:27 remaining to make the final score, 7-4.

Daniel Jones (Sr., Richmond Hill, Ontario) posted 17 saves in relief of Hare to register the win. Geoff Sadjadi made 20 saves in the losing effort.

The Lakers went 2-for-5 with the extra attacker, while Cortland was 1-for-5.

Oswego State will host Elmira on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Blake lifts Potsdam to OT victory

0

MASSENA, N.Y.—Sophomore forward Zach Blake (Campbellford,
Ontario/Plattsburgh State) scored 2:42 into overtime to lift the SUNY
Potsdam men’s hockey team (1-0) to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over
Saint Michael’s College (0-1). Bears junior assistant captain Mike Arnold
(Didsbury, Alberta/Kingston Voyageur) had a goal and an assist and
freshman goaltender Austin Keiser (Dunwoody, Ga./Boston Bulldogs) captured
his first collegiate victory.

The pace of the contest was quick from the opening faceoff, with Potsdam
holding the edge in play early. However, it was Saint Michael’s jumping on
the board first with a power-play goal. Senior forward Josh Geary fired a
bad angle shot past Keiser at 6:56 mark of the opening period. Potsdam
fired 10 first period shots on Purple Knights senior goalie Eric McGuirk
(Rehoboth, Mass./Bridgewater Bandits), but entered the first intermission
trailing 1-0.

Potsdam looked to take advantage several early power plays in the second
period, but a turnover in its own zone cost them. At 4:20, senior forward
Tim McAuliffe (North Reading, Mass./Vermont Academy) poked the puck off
the stick of a Bears defender and roofed it for a shorthanded marker.
Potsdam answered just 40 seconds later. Arnold found freshman forward
Billy Pascalli (Deer Park, N.Y./New York Bobcats) at the left side of the
net and he beat an out of position McGuirk for his first career goal.
Junior defenseman Nick Avgerinos (Bolton, Ontario/Georgetown Raiders)
recorded the second assist on the play. Another turnover hurt the Bears at
15:27 as junior forward Ryan Arsenault (Reading, Mass./New Hampton School)
stole the puck on Saint Michael’s blue line and took it the length of the
ice to increase the lead to 3-1. Again Potsdam answered quickly, just 52
seconds later. Freshman forward Todd Thomas (Davidsville, Pa./Harford
Wolfpack) cut the gap to 3-2 with his first collegiate goal. Freshmen Matt
Thompson (Anchorage, Alaska/Kenai River Brown Bears) and Mike Riley
(Brantford, Ontario/Brantford Golden Eagles) each recorded the assists on
the goal.

Saint Michael’s put good pressure on the Bears to start the final period,
but couldn’t pad its lead. Keiser stopped 15 shots in the third period to
allow Potsdam’s offense to even the score. The equalizer came at 12:44, as
Riley picked up a Purple Knights’ turnover and fed Arnold. It was all
Bears after the tally, but McGuirk helped Saint Michael’s limp to
overtime.

Potsdam continued the pressure until Purple Knight senior defender Morgan
Bell (Vancouver, British Columbia/Saint Albert Saints) was whistled for a
hooking call 46 seconds into overtime. On the ensuing power play, the
Bears ratcheted their offensive play up another notch. They moved the puck
around the Saint Michael’s zone with ease until they found sophomore
defender Erick Ware (Huntsville, Alabama/Kenai River Brown Bears) at the
point. Ware blasted a slap shot that seemed destined for the back of the
net, but McGuirk snatched puck out of the air. Seconds later Blake won the
contest on the power-play with assists from junior forward Adam Place
(Scarborough, Ontario/Bowmansville Eagles) and senior captain Matt Viola
(Toronto, Ontario/Vaughan Vipers).

In goal, Keiser finished with 29 saves and McGuirk stopped 40 shots.
Potsdam outshot the Purple Eagles 44-32 on the night. Saint Michael’s was
1-3 on the man-advantage, while the Bears went 1-6. Potsdam is now 8-0 in
the all-time series with the Purple Knights.

“Structurally, I thought we were on point with our game,” said Bears Head
Coach Chris Bernard. “Austin came up with timely saves that gave us a
chance to hang around and it’s got to feel good for Blake to make and
instant contribution. In Austin, I saw a kid that kept getting better as
the game went on. It’s a great start for him and something to build on. It
was great to see so many of our freshmen play so well in our first game.
It’s a credit to our upperclassman who’ve really done all they can to help
them get better every day.”

The Bears are back at Massena Arena tomorrow night to open SUNYAC play as
they host the Morrisville State Mustangs at 7 p.m.

Oswego Loses to Castleton in Season Opener

0

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team (0-1-0) was shut out in the season opener, 3-0, against Castleton State on Friday night.

The Spartans took advantage of a Laker cross-checking penalty near the end of the first period when Nicoline Jensen scored a goal on a pass from Danielle Roberts and Eileen Coyne to open the game’s scoring.

Castleton started the second period strong, scoring 34 seconds after the period began.  Jade Wagner scored for the home team, whil Anna Daniels picked up the assist. The Spartans put the puck into the net again 12 minutes later on a goal from Anna Daniels with an assist going to Roberts.

Both teams were scoreless in the third period to end the game at 3-0.

Jocelyn St. Clair (Jr. Cambridge, Ont.) took the most shots for the Lakers with six, while Tori Trovato (Fr., Fulton, N.Y.) made 29 saves in her first collegiate ice hockey game. Castleton State’s Paula Stephens finished with 28 saves for the win.

Cornell Defeats Brown in ECAC Opener

0

ITHACA, N.Y. – Brown goalie Katie Jamieson had a terrific day in stopping 35 shots, but the No. 2 Big Red offense was able to sneak one past her and went on to defeat Brown 2-0 in both teams’ ECAC Hockey opener.

The Big Red (3-1, 1-0 ECAC Hockey) got a second-period power play goal in front of the net by freshman Taylor Woods, and an empty netter  by Jillian Saulnier with 27 seconds left sealed the Big Red’s 12th consecutive victory over the Bears.

In net for Cornell, junior Lauren Slebodnick had her first shutout of the season and stopped all 12 shots she faced.

“It is surprisingly easier and a little bit more fun, too, when you don’t get a lot of shots,” Slebodnick said. “It was more of a focus battle. You really have to be ready for each shot.”

The Bears, playing in their season opener, were completely dominated for most of the game and did not test Slebodnick much. The junior had to make a few dangerous saves, and the defense was excellent in front of her to hold Brown to 0 for 6 on the power play.

The Big Red peppered the Brown net throughout the first period and emerged with a 16-4 shot advantage through 20 minutes. But Cornell was unable to get a puck past Jamieson even with four full minutes on the power play.

A Brown penalty with 10 seconds left in the period, though wound up resulting in Cornell’s goal later in the second.

With just a few ticks remaining on the power play, Kelly Murray took a shot from the blue line. Woods was standing right in front of the net and deflected the puck past Katie Jaimeson for the 1-0 Big Red lead.

“We needed to get more people in front of [Jamieson],” Cornell coach Doug Derraugh said. “I felt like she saw too many pucks tonight. It’s pretty tough to make saves when you can’t see it coming through, and our only goal on her the whole night was a result of that.”

The rest of the period saw plenty of power play opportunities for the Bears, as they had six minutes of the man advantage. But Cornell played a stifling penalty kill, holding Brown to just one shot on its three power plays in the period. When 40 minutes had elapsed, Cornell was ahead 25-6 in shots.

The third saw more of the same with each team getting two power play opportunities and neither converting. As the Big Red killed off a Brown advantage with about a minute to go, the Bears pulled Jamieson to get a 6 on 5.

The plan backfired, though, as Lauriane Rougeau started Cornell up the ice and found Brianne Jenner who got the puck over to Saulnier for the empty netter.

The Big Red is now 1-0 in conference play for the fourth consecutive year and has scored a goal in 86 consecutive contests.

Cornell 5-1 Over St. Lawrence in Home Opener

0

ITHACA, N.Y. – For 15 minutes, Cornell had no goals. Sixty seconds later, the Big Red had three.

A whirlwind sequence of three goals in 59 seconds vaulted No. 2 Cornell to an 5-1 victory against St. Lawrence in the Big Red’s home opener on Tuesday night. Emily FultonBrianne Jenner and Alyssa Gagliardi had the Big Red goals in that wild minute.

Freshman Anna Zorn added a goal in the third period for the Big Red (2-1) and Fulton – who also had an assist – got her second of the night to give the Big Red its final total and help avenge a loss in last season’s ECAC Hockey Tournament Final to this same St. Lawrence (0-5) squad.

Fulton’s first goal came on a brilliant individual effort as she stole the puck from a Saints defenseman in the Big Red attacking zone and beat Carmen MacDonald high and to the right with 4:59 showing on the first-period clock.

Thirty seconds after that, Jenner put home a rebound off a shot taken by Jess Brown after Brown took a pass from Fulton.

Before the home fans got back in their seats, though, the Big Red was at it again. Jillian Saulnier took a shot from the left point, and the puck was saved by MacDonald. But a funny bounce sent the puck behind her and off the glass. The puck ricocheted off the glass, back over the net and right into the goal crease, where Zorn was there to tap it to Gagliardi and a 3-0 lead. That third goal in 59 seconds caused the Saints to pull MacDonald from the game in favor of freshman Giulia Mazzocchi.

In the second period, neither team was able to score, though the Cornell defense shone bright as it had to kill off more than four consecutive minutes of St. Lawrence power play. Cornell also outshot the Saints 14-8 in the second period but was unable to find twice as Mazzocchi swatted away all 14 pucks that came her way.

The third period, though, saw the Big Red get back on the scoreboard. Fulton got her third point of the night when she scored a power play goal 13 minutes into the period, tipping a shot from the point by Gagliardi past Mazzocchi.

Zorn then earned her second goal of the year on a two-on-one breakaway with Brianne Jenner. Zorn had the puck on her stick last as she roofed it over Mazzocchi.

The Saints, continuing the lightning pace of goal scoring, added their only goal of the night on the power play 1:14 after Zorn scored her second with Rylee Smith nudging the puck past Cornell’s Lauren Slebodnick after a shot from the point by Brooke Fernandez bounced off a friendly body and left Smith with an open look.

Slebodnick was terrific in net otherwise, stopping 16 shots and allowing her fewest goals of the year to pick up her second win.
