Oswego Women Come Up Short

0

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team (6-5-1) attempted a comeback late in the third period when Jocelyn St. Clair scored on the power play, but the Lakers came up short in a 2-1 loss to Amherst (4-4-0). All three goals registered in Saturday night’s contest came while on the power play.

In a scoreless first period, both teams had solid scoring opportunities in a back-and-forth frame, but came up empty.

Amherst struck first at 11:59 into the second period on a power play goal by Megan Doyen with an assist from Emily Flom. Doyen threw the puck at the net and bounced it off Bridget Smith‘s (So., Hamburg, N.Y.) leg into the goal, while she was standing parallel to the net along the goal line.

In the third period, the Lord Jeffs struck again on a power play goal by Doyen at 3:51. Flom and Geneva Llyod earned the assists. Oswego State turned up the intensity from that point on, as Amherst commited three penalties over the next 14 minutes. As the last of the three power-play chances was winding down, the Lakers called timeout with 1:04 left on the clock and Smith pulled from the goal. Jocelyn St. Clair (Jr., Cambridge, Ont.) capitalized 18 seconds later when her knuckle puck from the blue line went over Kasia Henley’s right shoulder into the net. Olivia Boersen (Jr., Stratford, Ont.) was credited with the assist.

Smith went back into the net, but was not there long as Oswego State won the subsequent faceoff. The Lakers tried to score the game-tying goal, but came up empty.

The Lakers ended the contest 1-for-5 on the power play, while Amherst was 2-for-3 with an extra skater.

Bridget Smith (So., Hamburg, N.Y.) made 28 saves in the loss, with Henley stopping 23 shots.

Oswego State returns to action Saturday, January 5 in the Campus Center Arena at 7 p.m. when it hosts a series against non-conference St. Norbert.

Bears gain revenge over Huskies, 10-4

0

GORHAM, MAINE—The SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team (5-7) had its largest
offensive showing of the season, hitting double-digits in a 10-4 win over
Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon. Four different Bears had three-point
games and sophomores Ken Simon (Norwell, Mass./Philadelphia Revolution)
and Dan McCamey (Dayton, Ohio/Minnesota Flying Aces) and freshman Matt
Thompson (Anchorage, Alaska/Kenai River Brown Bears) each scored two
goals.

Thompson put Potsdam in front for good just 1:38 into the contest. Eight
minutes later junior assistant captain Adam Place (Scarborough,
Ontario/Bowmansville Eagles) made it 2-0 on the power play. Troy Thibodeau
got the Huskies back within one with a shorthanded marker at 17:12. The
Bears carried the 2-1 lead into the intermission.

Junior forward Zach Blake (Campbellford, Ontario/Plattsburgh State) scored
a power-play goal 1:08 into the second period and Thompson struck again
just 28 seconds later for a 4-1 advantage. Southern Maine got their second
goal on the power play at 13:35 as Daniel Mattson made it a two-goal game.
With just three seconds left Simon notched the eventual game-winner and
Potsdam led 5-2 after 40 minutes.

The Bears exploded to double their score in the final stanza. Freshman
forward Mike Riley lit the lamp 37 seconds in to the third and McCamey
made it 7-2 43 seconds after that. Simon got his second at 4:40 and
sophomore defenseman Max Fogel (Williamsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres)
scored a power-play goal at 6:50 for a 9-2 lead. McCamey got his second
tally and the Bears’ 10th sandwiched between two final Southern Maine
goals to close out the scoring.

Potsdam freshman goalie Austin Keiser (Dunwoody, Ga./Boston Bulldogs) made
23 saves to earn the fourth victory of his career. Three Huskie goalies
saw action during the game. Josh Hillegas started and allowed four goals
and made 13 saves in the first 21:36. Michael Gendreau allowed three goals
and on eight shots over the middle 19:44. Patrick Farrington closed out
the game for Southern Maine between the pipes, allowing three goals on 12
shots.

Senior captain Matt Viola (Toronto, Ontario/Vaughan Vipers) (0-3-3),
McCamey (2-1-3), Blake (1-2-3) and Riley (1-2-3) each notched three points
for the Bears. Sam Guimond led the Huskies with two assists.

Potsdam is off until Friday, Jan. 4 when they travel to Castleton State to
face the Spartans at 7 p.m.

Bears down Saint Mike’s, 3-1

0

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women’s ice hockey team (3-8-1) rallied
from an early deficit to defeat Saint Michael’s College (1-8-1) 3-1 on
Saturday afternoon. The Bears got goals from sophomore forwards Alexandra
Holowka (Winnepeg, Manitoba/Balmoral Hall) and Izzy Fayerman (Calgary,
Alberta/The Edge) and junior forward Jenn Crawford (Burlington,
Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres).

The Purple Knights jumped out in front just 45 seconds into the game.
Sophomore defenseman Maire Bartkus (Action, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon)
fired a shot from the left point that hit Bears junior goalie Dawna
Salvarinas (Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) in the blocker and
flutter up into the net. Potsdam responded with their own pressure, but
Saint Mike’s senior goalie Erin Stevens (Watertown, Conn./Connecticut
Polar Bears) continued her strong play. Potsdam finally broke through at
15:34 as Crawford found herself all alone with the puck on the right side
of the net and stuck it just under the crossbar to tie the score. Holowka
recorded the assist on the play. The Bears outshot the Purple Knights 19-6
in the opening period.

Potsdam continued to dominate the play in the second period, but Stevens
kept the Bears’ offense at bay until midway through. At the 10:32 mark,
Fayerman beat Stevens with a high shot from the left side of the net for
the eventual game-winner. Junior forward Amanda Lucky (Kanata,
Ontario/Clarkson University) and freshman forward Sally Mooney (New
Albany, Ohio/Wyoming Seminary) each assisted on the goal. The Bears didn’t
let up, posting 17-6 advantage in shots, but led by just one after 40
minutes.

Holowka sealed the win just 2:56 into the period, scoring on a shot from
the top of the right face-off circle that slipped under Stevens’ right
pad. Saint Mike’s pulled Stevens with 1:15 left, but couldn’t draw any
closer.

Salvarinas, the reigning ECAC West Goalie of the Week, made 16 saves to
earn her third victory of the season. Stevens finished with 42 saves,
giving her 82 on the weekend. Potsdam was 0-3 on the man advantage and
Saint Mike’s was 0-4.

The Bears are off until Jan. 4-5, when they travel to South Burlington,
Vt. for the Double Tree Ice Hockey Classic hosted by Saint Michael’s.
Potsdam faces Nichol’s College on Friday at 4 p.m. and the host Purple
Knights at the same time on Saturday.

Oswego Falls to Utica

0

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Paul Rodrigues scored with 4.4 seconds remaining to pull the second-ranked Oswego State men’s ice hockey team (8-2-0) to within one goal, but it came up short in a 3-2 loss to ninth-ranked Utica (8-2-0) on Friday night.

In a fast paced first period with few whistles, Utica dealt the first blow at the 3:22 mark when Peter LaFosse scored on a pass through the crease from Adam Graff as LaFosse was crashing to the net. LaFosse lifted the puck over Andrew Hare’s (Sr., Burlington, Ontario) pad as he was sliding from across from right to left. Trever Hertz was also credited with the assist on LaFosse’s second goal of the season.

The Pioneers held the lead until the ninth minute when Zach Josepher’s (Sr., Wantagh, N.Y.) blast from the left point was deflected in front of the net by Kyle Badham (Jr., Oakville, Ontario) past Utica goalie Nick Therrien.

Both squads went back-and-forth until late in the stanza when Louis Educate got behind the Oswego State defense as the Pioneers were transitioning out of their defensive zone. He wristed a shot from the right circle to the far side of the goal to put Utica ahead, 2-1, with 18.9 seconds left on the clock.

The second period went by in a similar fashion as the first. The Lakers nearly evened the score midway through the frame when the Pioneers were called for elbowing. Oswego State had several quality looks at the net, but the shots either went wide or were blocked. The home team went on the power play again later in the period, but came up empty once again. Hare closed out the period with a series of solid saves to maintain a one-goal contest at intermission.

Early in the third period, Hare stonewalled a short-handed breakaway and followed that up with a nifty glove save seconds later to keep the Lakers within striking distance. As the stanza wore on, Utica began to pack it tighter inside the slot defensively, making it difficult for Oswego State to get shots off and passes across ice.

The Lakers pulled Hare with 49.6 seconds left in regulation, but the puck was misplayed at the blue line leading to Utica’s Rob Morton winning a foot race to the loose puck, tapping it into the empty net with 33.3 seconds on the clock. The Pioneers then called timeout.

Oswego State won the ensuing faceoff and carried the puck into the offensive end, allowing Hare to skate back to the bench a second time. The move paid off as Paul Rodrigues (Sr., Etobicoke, Ontario) buried a rebound in front of the net after a Denton King (Fr., Pense, Saskatchewan) slap shot with 4.4 seconds to play. It was the Lakers’ turn to call timeout, but Utica won the faceoff to end the game.

Neither team capitalized on power plays, as Oswego State went 0-for-4 and Utica went 0-for-2. Hare compiled 30 saves, while Therrien stopped 29 shots.

The loss marked the first time since December 11 and 30, 2010 that the Lakers lost back-to-back games. Oswego State fell to Hobart, 5-2, followed by a 5-1 loss to Hamilton.

the break.

Less than four minutes later, Garrett White made it 5-0. After the goal,
Bears junior goalie Shane Talarico (Greensburg, Pa./Elmira College) was
replaced by freshman Austin Keiser (Dunwoody, Ga./Boston Bulldogs).
Potsdam trailed 5-0 after two.

Nearly six minutes into the third period, Thibodeau scored a shorthanded
marker for a 6-0 Huskie advantage. At the 7:39 mark, freshman forward Jake
Rivera (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Hartford Wolfpack) finally got the Bears
on the board with an unassisted goal. Freshman forward Billy Pascalli

helpers from sophomore forward Trevor Cope (Swartz Creek, Mich./Atlanta
Jr. Knights) and junior assistant captain Adam Place (Scarborough,
Ontario/Bowansville Eagles). Thibodeau completed his hat trick 2:08 later
and Southern Maine regained its five-goal lead. Sophomore Ryan Miller
(Didsbury, Alberta/Arizona State) closed the scoring with 1:01 remaining
on assists from sophomore defenseman Dan McCamey (Dayton, Ohio/Minnesota
Flying Aces) and freshman forward Todd Thomas (Davidsville, Pa./Hartford
Wolfpack).

Talarico allowed five goals and made 22 saves in the first 34:07, while
Keiser allowed the last two scores and finished with five saves in the

Bears rally for tie with Purple Knights, 2-2

0

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (2-8-1) rallied twice
to earn a 2-2 draw with Saint Michael’s College (1-7-1) on Friday
afternoon at Cheel Arena. Sophomore forwards Alexandra Holowka (Winnepeg,
Manitoba/Balmoral Hall) and Izzy Fayerman (Calgary, Alberta/The Edge) each
scored for the Bears.

The Purple Knights got on the board first in an even opening period at the
14:05 mark. Junior defenseman Olivia Collins (South Boston, Mass./Boston
Latin School) took a shot from the point that was tipped over the stick of
Potsdam senior goalie Jen Conophy (Glenmont, N.Y./Albany Ice Cats) by
freshman forward Caitie Shea (Smithfield, R.I./Mount Saint Charles
Academy) for a 1-0 Saint Mike’s lead. Conophy turned aside the other eight
shots she faced in the period, while Purple Knights’ senior goalie Erin
Stevens (Watertown, Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears) stopped all nine Bears
attempts.

The even play continued through the second period. After killing off a
penalty, Potsdam went on its only power play midway through the middle
stanza. After Stevens stopped two Bears’ shots, Holowka buried the second
rebound to tie the game at one. Sophomore forward Emilee Hazelden
(Bloomingdale, N.Y./Northwood School) recorded the assist. The goaltenders
worked hard during middle stanza to keep the score tied heading into the
intermission. Stevens made 16 saves, while Conophy put up a zero with 15
more.

Senior defenseman Allison Graf (Long Lake, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds)
put Saint Mike’s back in front 2-1 at 2:32 of the third period with a hard
shot from the point that glanced off Conophy’s pads. Potsdam kept the
pressure on, outshooting the Purple Knights 14-9 in the third period, but
Stevens kept the puck out of the net. After the Bears killed off another
penalty, the offense finally made its move. With 3:11 on the clock,
Fayerman finished a beautiful tic-tac-toe passing play, beating Stevens
five-hole. Junior forward Amanda Lucky (Kanata, Ontario/Clarkson
University) and freshman forward Sally Mooney (New Albany, Ohio/Wyoming
Seminary) each notched assists on the tally. The Bears nearly grabbed the
lead a minute later, but a shot from Amanda Lucky sailed high.

Just three shots were taken in overtime, two by Potsdam and one by Saint
Mike’s, but the Bears had the better of the chances. With 1:09 remaining
in the extra session, Lucky tipped a shot from the point, but Stevens
robbed her with a reflex glove save. With about 20 seconds to go Hazelden
fired wide on a breakaway and the teams settled with a 2-2 draw.

Conophy finished with 32 saves in another solid effort, while Stevens
totaled 40 stops. Potsdam outshot the Purple Knights 42-34. The Bears were
1-1 on the power play and Saint Mike’s was 0-3.

The teams go at it again tomorrow at 3 p.m. to close out the first half of
the season.

Big Red Take Dartmouth in OT

0

For the second consecutive season, the Big Red wound up in an overtime contest at Dartmouth.

And for the second consecutive year, the Big Red emerged with a thrilling extra-time victory.

With 1:22 left in the overtime period and Cornell on the power play, Jillian Saulnier took a slap shot from the right point that got past Dartmouth’s, Lindsay Holdcroft, boosting the visiting Big Red to a 2-1 victory against the Big Green in Thompson Arena on Friday night.

No. 2 Cornell (9-1, 7-0 ECAC Hockey) remained perfect on the season in league play while the Big Green (4-2-1, 3-2) missed out on a chance to take at least one point from the conference’s top team. Besides scoring the game-winning goal, Saulnier also assisted on freshman Taylor Woods‘ score in the second period that tied the game after Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead in the first period.

Lauren Slebodnick, playing her first contest since Nov. 2 against Princeton, made 29 saves in more than 60 minutes for the victory.

The Big Red has now defeated Dartmouth in two consecutive contests dating back to last year’s game in Thompson Arena that was decided by an Erin Barley-Maloney goal in overtime. The team is 7-0 in conference play for the first time since 2010 and is 9-1 for the third consecutive season. Cornell has scored at least one goal 92 straight contests .

Early on, though, the Big Green defense was holding strong, and its offense got one on the board first.

Dartmouth got the first goal of the night as Laura Stacey beat Slebodnick late in the first period on an unassisted tally.

Cornell got the game tied in the second period when Woods converted on a power play goal. Taking passes from Saulnier andBrianne Jenner, Woods finished the play past Holdcroft to make it a 1-1 game just 5:24 into the second.

The game made it to overtime thanks to clutch penalty killing by the Big Red. Saulnier took an elbowing penalty with 1:49 left in the contest, but Cornell was able to kill off the penalty and send the game to the extra period, also killing off the last 11 seconds of the elbowing call in overtime.

The first three minutes of overtime were fairly even, with both teams getting multiple chances. But when Jenna Hobeika took a tripping penalty with 1:38 left in overtime, the Big Red struck. Cornell won the intial faceoff, and a shot by Lauriane Rougeau went wide. But the team recollected the puck, and Laura Fortino got it over to Saulnier on the right point. The sophomore fired on net and beat Holdcroft, giving Cornell its third consecutive overtime win.

Canisius Ties

0

Despite registering a season-high 44 shots, the Canisius College hockey team netted only one goal in a 1-1 draw with AIC on Saturday afternoon at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. The Grif

fs are now 2-6-4 on the season and 1-2-2 in Atlantic Hockey play, while the Yellow Jackets are 3-5-3 and 0-3-3 against league foes.

“We just have to stay the course,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. “We are playing well and making really good things happen but the puck just isn’t bouncing right for us. As long as we play with the same urgency and keep generating chances, we will find the back of the net and get two deserved points.”

Junior Kyle Gibbons (Westlake, Ohio) scored the Griffs’ lone goal on the afternoon. Classmate Tony Capobianco (Mississauga, Ontario) recorded 21 saves to anchor the defense.

It was the Yellow Jackets who struck first in the contest, scoring on the power play with 1:07 remaining in the opening period. Jon Puskar’s shot from the point snuck through with screens in front for the early 1-0 advantage.

Canisius responded and controlled the game following the first intermission. After the teams each posted nine shots on goal in the first 20 minutes, the Griffs would outshoot the Yellow Jackets, 35-13, the remaining 45 minutes – including a 20-5 advantage alone in the second frame.

The Griffs finally got on the scoreboard 5:13 into the second stanza when Gibbons scored on the power play. The junior sent a wrist shot into the back of the net from the left face-off circle to knot the contest at one. Junior Ben Danford (Stillwater, Minn.) and sophomore Mitch McCrank (Haileybury, Ontario) both registered assists on the game-tying goal.

However, Canisius was unable to find the game-winning tally in the final 40 minutes. AIC’s Ben Meisner stopped the last 28 shots he saw to preserve the tie and finished with 43 saves overall.

The Griffs outshot AIC, 44-22, on the afternoon – the most shots for Canisius in nearly two seasons. Both teams also finished 1-for-4 on the power play.

Hobart Breaks Tie

0

MASSENA, N.Y.–Seventh-ranked Hobart College (8-0-2) scored two second
period goals to break a 1-1 tie and down the SUNY Potsdam men痴 hockey
team (3-5) 3-1 at Massena Arena on Sunday afternoon. Senior forward Bobby
Hannah (Burbank, Calif./Portland) had three assists to lead the Statesmen
and freshman forward Matt Thompson (Anchorage, Alaska/Kenai River Brown
Bears) scored for the Bears.

Potsdam built early momentum, putting four shots on Hobart senior goalie
Marty Ausserhofer (Brunico, Italy/New Jersey Rockets) before the Statesmen
got their first.  However, it was the Statesmen that drew first blood at
9:25 of the opening period. Sophomore defenseman Ryan Michel (Camillus,
N.Y./Northwood School) wristed a shot from the point that floated past
screened Potsdam junior goalie Shane Talarico (Greensburg, Pa./Elmira
College) and into the upper right corner of the net. Hannah and senior
forward Frank Salituro (Vaughan, Ontario/St. Michael痴) recorded the
assists. The Bears answered less than four minutes later as Thompson
picked up a loose puck in front of Hobart痴 net and roofed it over
Ausserhofer. Freshman forward Billy Pascalli (Deer Park, N.Y./New York
Bobcats) assisted on the goal. The Statesmen got the momentum back as they
went on the power play with 1:09 left in the period. Hobart pelted
Talarico with the last five shots of the stanza, but went into the break
still tied at 1-1.

The Bears managed to kill the penalty after two more Statesmen shots to
start the second 20 minutes, but the pressure continued. At 1:58,
first-year forward Mac Olson (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Des Moines) picked up a
pass in front of Potsdam痴 goal and beat Talarico five-hole for the
eventual game-winner. Hanna and senior defenseman Harry Radovich (Rumson,
N.J./Westminster) each registered assists on the play. Hobart slowed down
Potsdam痴 offense for much of the rest of the contest and added an
insurance marker on the man advantage at 8:17. Michel fired a shot from
the right point and Salituro tipped it past Talarico to close the scoring
in the contest. Hannah notched the second assist.

Hobart never relinquished control of the contest in the third period,
maintaining possession of the puck and outshooting the Bears 15-9. With 57
seconds remaining, Talarico was pulled for an extra attacker, but Potsdam
was unable to draw any closer.

Talarico finished with 35 saves in his first collegiate start. Ausserhofer
finished with 33 saves to earn the victory. The Statesmen went 1-2 on the
power play, while the Bears were 0-1.

Potsdam is back in action next weekend as they head to Central New York to
face top-ranked Oswego at 7 p.m. on Friday and Cortland at the same time
on Saturday.

Canisius Over AIC

0

The Canisius College hockey team netted a season-best two power-play goals en route to a 4-1 victory over AIC on Sunday afternoon at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. With the win, the Griffs improve to 3-6-4 on the season, evening its Atlantic Hockey record to 2-2-2. The Yellow Jackets drop to 3-6-3 and 0-4-3 in league play.

“Our power play was the difference today as we were able to net two big goals that gave us the two-goal cushion late,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. “It was a tight, hard-checking game tonight. We also gained a lot of confidence from our penalty kill – led by senior captains Torrey Lindsay and Preston Shupe – with two stops in the third. We rode that momentum from those kills and turned it into a power-play and insurance goal on the other end.”

Senior Torrey Lindsay (Grosse Isle, Manitoba), junior Kyle Gibbons (Westlake, Ohio) and sophomores Doug Beck (Plymouth, Mich.) and Matthew Grazen (East Amherst, N.Y.) each netted goals in the winning effort.

Junior defender Ben Danford (Stillwater, Minn.) and sophomore Mitch McCrank (Haileybury, Ontario) paced the Canisius attack with two assists on the afternoon.

Junior Tony Capobianco (Mississauga, Ontario) stopped 30 shots in goal to anchor the Canisius defense.

The Griffs took the early lead in the contest and never gave it back with Lindsay scoring 9:24 into the game. Lindsay knocked in a rebound off a McCrank shot for the 1-0 advantage and his second goal of the season. Senior Preston Shupe (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) also posted an assist on the go-ahead tally.

Gibbons stretched the Canisius advantage to two with a power-play tally at the 14:39 mark of the opening period. McCrank sent a cross-ice pass through the slot and Gibbons fired it in for the 2-0 lead. Danford added his first assist on the day on the Gibbons’ third score of the season.

The 2-0 lead would hold until the third period when AIC scored 7:27 into the frame. Brandon Fagerheim knocked in the puck on an open net after a cross-ice pass to bring the Yellow Jackets within one, 2-1.

Canisius reclaimed its two-goal advantage when Beck netted the team’s second power-play tally of the game with 5:29 remaining in regulation. Beck ripped a shot into the back of the net off a rebound for the 3-1 lead. Danford and Gibbons both posted an assist on Beck’s third goal of the season.

The Griffs then sealed the win when Grazen netted an empty-net goal with 32 seconds left. Lindsay and senior Ben Parker (Port Perry, Ontario) both posted assists as Canisius finished off the 4-1 victory.

AIC had a slight edge in shots on the afternoon, 31-27. The Griffs were 2-for-5 on the power play, while killing all three of the Yellow Jackets’ extra-man advantages. Chandler Long recorded 23 saves in net for AIC.

Canisius’ Capobiano Honored

0

The anchor of the nation’s eighth-ranked defense this season, junior netminder Tony Capobianco (Mississauga, Ontario)of the Canisius College hockey team was named Atla

ntic Hockey Goaltender of the Week on Monday after helping the Griffs earn 3-of-4 points against AIC during the weekend.

In a pair of contests against the Yellow Jackets, Capobianco recorded a 0.96 goals against average and .962 save percentage. He recorded 21 saves in a 1-1 draw on Saturday before coming back with a 30-save performance in a 4-1 victory on Sunday.
