Gjurich Heading to U of Maine

0

(Amherst, NY) – The Buffalo Jr. Sabres are pleased to announce that forward Tyler Gjurich, who earlier this week became only the second player in franchise history to score 50 goals, has committed to the University of Maine and will join the NCAA Division I program beginning next academic year.

“They’ve been interested for a pretty long time,” said Gjurich. “Once they came and offered me to go, you can’t really turn down going to Maine!  I was really excited.”

“Tyler has earned this wonderful opportunity,” added Jr. Sabres head coach and general manager Michael Peca.  “He has committed himself this season to round out his game and compliment his incredible offensive instincts. In all my years of hockey I haven’t seen many players that shoot the puck as well as he does. Maine is getting one heck of a player.”

Gjurich, who resides in Hatfield, Pennsylvania but previously played midget level hockey for the Buffalo Regals organization, is the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s leading goal scorer.  Gjurich has scored 52 goals so far this regular season with one game left to play.  On February 17 he netted his 50th and 51st goals and became only the second player in the history of the junior franchise to clear the 50-goal mark.  The only other person to do it was Brian Gionta, now captain of the Montreal Canadiens, who scored 57 times for what was then known as the Niagara Scenics in the 1996-97 season.

Gjurich becomes the seventh player on the current roster to commit to an NCAA hockey program.  He has not yet decided on an academic major.

Conophy, Nelson send Bears back to ECAC West Playoffs

0

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (10-13-2, 6-9-1 ECAC
West) needed a victory over Buffalo State (6-18-1, 3-13) to return to the
ECAC West Tournament and senior goaltender Jen Conophy (Glenmont,
N.Y./Albany Ice Cats) and freshman forward Sarah Nelson (Highlands Ranch,
Colo./Colorado Selects) came through with clutch performances. Conophy
shone the brightest on Senior Day, stopping all 22 shots she faced for her
second career shutout. Nelson scored the only goal the Bears needed for
the win.

Potsdam looked strong early, testing Bengals junior goalie Jordan Lee
(Colorado Springs, Colo./University of Southern Maine). Nelson struck at
the 5:14 mark, slamming home her own rebound for the decisive tally.
Senior captain Katie Komsa (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/Sault Ste. Marie AA
Midget) and freshman forward Rachel Grefke (Livonia, Mich./Victory Honda)
recorded the assists. The teams spent much of the rest of the period on
the power play or killing them. The Bears were 0-3 on the man advantage
and needed a few big saves from Conophy to keep the Bengals from a
shorthanded goal. Buffalo State was 0-2 on the power play. The shots were
13-12 in favor of the hosts after 20 minutes.

Potsdam had to kill of three power plays in the second period, including a
59-second five-on-three situation at the 13:09 mark. However, Buffalo
State couldn’t crack the Bears’ defense or Conophy. The Bengals outshot
Potsdam 7-3 in the second period.

There were six power plays evenly divided in the third period, but the
drama built toward the last few minutes. Both teams had strong scoring
opportunities, but couldn’t solve Conophy or Lee. With 2:56 remaining,
Bears junior forward Jessica Silveira (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Thunder)
swooped in front of the net and backhanded a shot that looked like a sure
goal. Lee slid across the crease and pinned the puck between her glove and
left pad to rob Silveira of an insurance tally. Potsdam was whistled for
an interference penalty with 1:20 left and Buffalo State pulled Lee for an
extra attacker. With less than minute left, Bengals senior forward Tara
Boliard (Canton, Mich./Little Caesars) sent a pass from the right corner
to the point. No one was there and puck slid the length of the ice and
clanged off the Bengals’ goalpost, nearly doubling the Bears’ lead.
Conophy made several more saves as Buffalo State swarmed the net and
Potsdam was able to run out the clock.

Lee finished with 25 saves for the Bengals. Buffalo State was 0-8 on the
power play and the Bears went 0-6.

The victory extends the careers of Potsdam seniors Conophy, Komsa,
Brittany Westlake (Georgetown, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) and Nadine
Cunningham (Bow, N.H./St. Mark’s Prep), who were honored in a pregame
ceremony. The four have combined to play in 322 games for the Bears.

With the victory, Potsdam leapfrogs both Cortland and Neumann into the
fifth playoff spot. The Bears will travel to fourth-seeded Utica College
next Saturday, Feb. 23, for the first round of the ECAC West Playoffs.
Potsdam tied Utica 1-1 on the road on Jan. 12, before falling 2-0 at Cheel
on Jan. 13. The Bears have now reached the playoffs in three of their
first five varsity seasons.

This season the group of Jason Beattie,  C.J. Chartrain,  Jeff Hannan,  Giancarlo Iuorio,  Dan Weiss and Marc Zanette have combined for 100 goals and 187 assists in 650 games.

Raise The Banner
The weekend split with Robert Morris, and other conference results propelled the Purple Eagles to their first Atlantic Hockey Regular Season Championship.  This is the team’s first AHA regular-season title since the program entered into the conference in 2010-11, and its first conference crown since the 2006-07 season when NU earned the former College Hockey America regular-season title.

The team will be honored after Friday’s game as AHA Commissioner Robert DeGregorio will be presenting the Purple Eagle with the regular season trophy.

Playoff Picture
Niagara’s weekend spilt with Canisius (Feb. 7 & 9) was enough to clinch a first-round playoff bye for the Purple Eagles.  The Purps will host a team yet to be determined in a best-of-three series from March 15-17.

Home Sweet Home
The 4-3 victory on Feb. 15 extended NU’s current home ice unbeaten streak to 19 games, dating back to NU’s 3-3 draw against Air Force on Feb. 11, 2012.  The streak is three short of the program record of 22.  NU is the only team in Division I hockey to go 22 consecutive games without a loss between Feb.11, 2006 and Nov. 17, 2007.

Scouting The Lakers
Mercyhurst is 14-3-3, and 12-9-2 in the AHA with two weeks remaining in the regular season.  The Lakers hold the third spot in the standings with 26 points and four games left.

The team is led by Ryan Misiak (13g; 19a)and Matthew Zay (12g; 20a) who are top on the team with 32 points.  Chris Bodo is tops in goals with 14, while Paul Chiasson has added 13 tallies along with 10 assists for 23 points.

Last Meeting On The Ice
Niagara earned its first win of the season against the Lakers on Oct. 13, 2012.  Matt Williams tallied the game-winning goal midway through the second period.  Williams also added an assist in the Purp’s initial goal scored by Giancarlo Iuorio.  Carsen Chubak pushed aside 25 Mercyhurst shots.

Canisius Hosts Robert Morris Friday

0
Canisius (11-16-5, 10-11-2 AHA) vs. Robert Morris (16-12-2, 11-11-1 AHA)
Dates: Feb. 22-23, 2013
Time: 7:05 p.m.
Locations: Buffalo, N.Y./Pittsburgh, Pa.
Rinks: Buffalo State Sports Arena/84 Lumber Arena
With the season winding down, the Canisius hockey team prepares for a home-and-home series with Robert Morris. The schools – separated by just one point in the standings – are set to meet in Buffalo on Friday and Pittsburgh on Saturday with both games scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

SCOUTING THE GRIFFS
• Canisius enters the weekend tied for eighth in the Atlantic Hockey standings with a 10-11-2 league record. The Griffs are just one point behind seventh and two behind fourth place.
• The Griffs lost a pair of tight games at Air Force last weekend, falling 3-1 in the opener and 3-2 in the finale.
• Junior Kyle Gibbons leads the Griffs with 24 points and 14 goals with junior defender Ben Danford posting a team-best 13 assists.
• Junior Tony Capobianco has anchored the nation’s seventh-ranked defense with a 2.17 goals against average and .932 save percentage.

POWER SURGE
• After a slow start on the extra-man unit, the Griffs power-play unit has awaken.
• In the last 12 games, Canisius has scored on 26.7 percent of its power plays, compared to just 11.9 percent in the first 20 contests.
• The Griffs have scored at least one power play goal in eight of the 12 games during the streak.
• Overall, Canisius has scored on 17.9 percent of its power plays this season, more than double the 8.3 percent conversion rate last year.

RUMBLE ANCHORS POWER-PLAY IMPROVEMENT
• One of the biggest differences in the power-play unit from the first half of the season to the second half is freshman Chris Rumble.
• Rumble has played each of the last 12 contests after missing the first half of the campaign, coinciding with the Griffs’ 14.8 percent improvement with the extra-man.
• The rookie defender plays the point on the power play and now has five points (2g, 3a) with the extra-man advantage.
• Rumble, who has seven points (2g, 5a) overall, leads all Canisius defensemen with 0.53 points per game and with two goals.

POWER OUTAGE
• The team’s penalty kill has been just as strong for the Griffs this year.
• Canisius owns the nation’s third-ranked penalty kill unit, successfully killing 90.1 percent of power plays this year (109-of-121).

MOST IMPROVED
• The penalty kill success shows a huge improvement from last year.
• During the 2011-12 campaign, Canisius killed only 77.7 percent of its opponents’ power plays. The Griffs ranked 51st of 58 teams nationally.
• Special teams was the biggest downfall for the Griffs last year as the team was outscored by 33 goals (but only minus-13 even-strength). This year, Canisius is +10 on special teams.

CANISIUS – ROBERT MORRIS SERIES HISTORY
• Robert Morris holds a slight edge in 12 meetings between the two schools, 6-5-1.
• The series is even in Buffalo at 3-3-1, while Robert Morris holds a 3-2-0 edge in Pittsburgh.
• The Colonials earned a victory at Canisius earlier in the season, posting a 4-0 win on Nov. 9. It marked the first time that the road team won in seven Atlantic Hockey meetings.

ABOUT THE COLONIALS
• Robert Morris is 16-12-2 on the season and 11-11-1 in Atlantic Hockey play. The Colonials are currently seventh in the Atlantic Hockey standings, just one point ahead of the Griffs.
• The Colonials are coming off a split with nationally-ranked Niagara last weekend, falling 4-3 in the opener and earning a 6-5 overtime win on Saturday.
• Senior Adam Brace leads the team with 30 points, 10 goals and 20 assists. Sophomore Cody Wydo has netted a team-best 14 goals.
• Overall, four Robert Morris players have netted at least 10 goals this season.
• Senior Eric Levine has started 27 of the team’s 30 games in net this season. He owns a 2.65 goals against average and .929 save percentage.

Senior Weekend Showdowns for Raiders with #20 Union & RPI

HAMILTON – The Colgate men’s hockey team will be honoring its seniors this weekend as the Raiders welcome No. 20 Union and Rensselaer to Starr Rink.

SUPPORTING THE FIGHT AGAINST HODGKIN’S LYMPOMA
During Saturday night’s game against Rensselaer, Colgate Athletics is supporting Spiro Goulakos’ fight against Hodgkin’s lymphoma as a dollar will be donated for every student that attends the final regular season home game of 2013.

THIS WEEK: UNION & RENSSELAER ON TAP FOR SENIOR WEEKEND
The Raiders will host Union and Rensselaer on Senior Weekend in the final two regular-season home games at Starr Rink for 2012-13. The Dutchmen were out of the top-20 last week, but jumped right back in at No. 20 after a home sweep of Brown and Yale. They won pretty handily with a 4-2 win over the Bulldogs on Friday night and shutout the Bears on Saturday with a 2-0 victory. The Engineers have turned it on in the second half as they are currently riding a six-game winning streak after demolishing Brown and Yale. Rensselaer outscored its opponents by a 9-2 score over the weekend. The Engineers are in the mix for a first-round bye with 21 league points, which is second in the standings. Since the second half began, they have earned 17 league points out of a possible 22.

NEXT TIME OUT: REGULAR SEASON FINALE AT BROWN & #13 YALE
The ECAC Hockey regular season will come to an end next weekend with a trip to Brown and Yale on tap. In the first matchup between Colgate and these two schools, the Raiders won both games, including a convincing 4-1 win over the Bulldogs on home ice and it was the last weekend sweep by Colgate. Yale is up first and the Bulldogs are having a tough stretch with just one win in their last six games after going unbeaten in six games prior to the lull. Even with the problems, they are still ranked in the top-20. Brown is coming off a weekend sweep at the hands of RPI and Union and the Bears are at Princeton and Quinnipiac this week. They have been up-and-down all season as they had a four-game unbeaten streak prior to the two losses.

LAST TIME OUT: TOUGH LOSSES ON THE ROAD IN NEW ENGLAND
During the longest road trip of the ECAC Hockey season, the Raiders dropped a 4-1 decision to Harvard on Friday night and then turned in a great effort against No. 17 Dartmouth, but the Big Green came out with the 5-4 win. At Harvard, the teams entered the second period scoreless and then the Crimson tallied three goals in the frame and earned a 4-1 win. Against Dartmouth, there were three lead changes and four ties. Colgate had a 4-3 third-period lead, but the Big Green scored two goals in a four-minute span to earn the victory.

COLGATE HOCKEY ON TWITTER
Colgate men’s hockey is now on Twitter. Fans can follow along for behind the scenes photos and facts, while also getting game day updates. Search for the Twitter handle @Colgate_Hockey and follow the Raider23s today.

GOULAKOS RETURNS TO THE ICE
Sophomore Spiro Goulakos missed the previous five games before the Dartmouth game on Saturday night. He made his first appearence since being diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma. He was given clearance from his doctors to continue to play after chemotherapy treatments. The defenseman logged good minutes against the Big Green, but didn’t record any points in his return.

BOURDON CLOSE TO MILESTONE
The senior forward currently has 96 points in 144 career games after tallying 10 points in the last 12 games. He has scored 41 goals and has handed out 55 assists in his career. Bourdon will look to become the 51st player to reach 100 points in his career. He continues to get closer after an assist this weekend at Dartmouth.

NOT ROOKIES ANYMORE
The eight skaters in the rookie class have been thrown into the fire with all eight seeing significant minutes this year. Spencer Finney has become the starting netminder and has started the last 17 of the last 18 games between the pipes. The skaters have done their part as five of them are in the top-10 in scoring among rookies in ECAC Hockey. Tylor Spink leads the way with 27 points, which is tied for fifth in the nation among first-year players. Mike Borkowski has come on lately with five points in his last seven games, while Darcy Murphy has 10 goals on the year.

WILSON STEPPING UP
Sophomore Joe Wilson has been able to turn it on lately and is has recroded a point in six of the last seven games for a total of six points. He has three goals and three assists, including a score at Dartmouth that knotted the game for the third time. He has posted points in nine of his last 13 games and has 22 points for third on the team. He is one point away from last season’s production. He has not missed a beat after playing with two of the best players in the nation last year. Wilson has eight goals and 14 assists.

SCORING SOURCES
Colgate has 12 skaters with 10 or more points this season and recently the Raiders have gotten goals from multiple sources. There are 10 players that have scored five or more goals. Last season, a total of seven skaters had five or more goals. The last multi-goal game from a Colgate player was against Sacred Heart on Jan. 5. The Raiders had a streak of nine-straight goals from nine different players. The streak was from the Clarkson game on Feb. 1 through the Princeton contest on Feb. 8.

STILL AT THE TOP
After scoring five goals in the two games this past weekend, the Raiders didn’t drop as the top scoring team in ECAC Hockey. They are only one of two teams in the league that average over three goals a game. Colgate is averaging 3.2 goals per contest, while St. Lawrence is second at 3.00. The Raiders have scored 96 goals this year, which is six more than the Saints, which are in second place in the league in the category.

FINISHING STRONG
The Raiders continue to play well in the final two periods as they are outscoring opponents by a plus-15.  The third period has been especially good with a plus-10 with a 35-25 advantage and the Raiders are 9-0-2 when leading after two frames. Colgate has had 70 of its 96 goals come in the second and third periods. The Raiders have held teams scoreless in the third period in 13 games this year and are 8-3-2 in those games.

SCOUTING THE DUTCHMEN
Union enters the weekend with a 15-10-5 overall record and an 8-6-4 conference mark after sweeping Yale and Brown last weekend. The sweep ended a short three-game unbeaten streak. Despite the slow second half, the Dutchmen are still in the running for a first-round bye as they are tied for second with St. Lawrence with 20 points. The last time Union was on the road, the Dutchmen didn’t fair too well as they were swept at Clarskon and St. Lawrence.

The visitors from Schenectady have a great power play with 35 goals on 140 chances to lead ECAC Hockey with a 25-percent efficiency. Wayne Simpson, Daniel Carr and Greg Coburn each have five power play goals to lead the way. Simpson is the team’s leader in goals and points with 13 and 29, respectively. Kyle Bodie is one of the top assist-getters in the conference with 21 on the season and he has three power play goals and two shorthanded goals. Carr has been great in his junior season with 11 goals and assists for 22 points. Shayne Gostisbehere missed four games with the team to be at the World Junior Championships in Russia and he has five goals and 12 helpers for 17 points.

In net, Troy Grosenick has been the starter in 24 games this year and has a 11-7-5 record. He has one shutout and has a 2.18 goals against average with a .922 save percentage. Colin Stevens has seen time as well with two shutouts in 10 games played with six starts.

SERIES HISTORY
The Raiders and Union have matched up 61 times prior to this weekend and Colgate has had the advantage in the series with a 37-22-2 advantage since the first meeting back in 1928-29. The two teams faced each other in the playoffs the last two seasons. Colgate eliminated Union in 2011 by winning a best-of-three series in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Hockey Tourament, while the Dutchmen knocked out the Raiders in the ECAC Hockey Semifinals in Atlantic City. Union has won the last four meetings, but Colgate has dominated at home with a 22-3-1 record at Starr Rink against the Dutchmen.

SCOUTING THE ENGINEERS
With the exception of top-ranked Quinnipiac, Rensselaer is the hottest team in the league as the Engineers have jumped all the way to second place with an 8-2-0 record in their last 10 ECAC Hockey games. They have a total of 21 points and have been on a six-game win streak and have been dominant with five of the six wins coming by three or more goals, including a 6-2 win at Clarkson and a 5-1 victory over Brown last weekend.

Jacob Laliberte and Matt Neal lead the way for Rensselaer with 25 points apiece. Laliberte has nine goals and 16 helpers, while Neal leads the team in assists with 18 on the year. Ryan Haggerty is the goal scorer for the Engineers with 12 on the year, while Nick Bailen has 10 on the year and both Haggerty and Bailen have 24 points. Six of Bailen’s 10 goals have come on the power play, which leads the team, and Laliberte has five of his own.

In net, rookie Jason Kasdorf has taken over the top netminder spot and has 15 starts and two shutouts. He has a 10-2-2 mark and is tops in the league in save percentage at .942 and is close to the top in goals against average at 1.52. He has allowed just 23 goals in over 900 minutes played and hasn’t allowed more than three during the Engineers’ winning streak.

SERIES HISTORY
Rensselaer and Colgate will be playing for the 119th time on Saturday night since 1915-16 and this series is the oldest in Raiders hockey history as it stretches 97 years. Colgate has played more games against Clarkson and Cornell, but those two series began in 1927. Colgate’s first ever game was against the Engineers in 1915-16 with the Raiders winning 6-1. It was the only game of the season. With Rensselaer’s 2-1 win in Troy earlier this season, the Engineers lead the series, 58-56-3, however, since 2003-04 the Raiders hold a 19-8-1 advantage.

Blue Knights shutdown Bears in SUNYAC Quarterfinals

0

GENESEO, N.Y.—SUNY Geneseo (17-8-1) scored five second period goals to
seize control of its SUNYAC Quarterfinal matchup with the SUNY Potsdam
men’s hockey team (9-16-1) and down the Bears 8-0. David Ripple scored
twice for the Ice Knights.

Geneseo was on the defensive early as Colin de Jersey was whistled for a
trip just 39 seconds into the contest. Potsdam fired two shots on goal
before Geneseo successfully killed off the penalty. The Ice Knights then
went on the offensive, outshooting the Bears 10-1 over the rest of the
period. However, Potsdam freshman goaltender Austin Keiser (Dunwoody,
Ga./Boston Bulldogs) was strong over the first 20 minutes, keeping the
contest scoreless heading into the break.

After the teams traded penalties seven seconds apart early in the second
period, the Ice Knights’ Alex Lubczuk scored a four-on-four marker with a
wrap-around move. After the goal, Geneseo continued its momentum with
back-to-back power plays. Potsdam killed the first, but Ripple scored with
three seconds left in the second after his shot deflected off a Bears’
defenseman and past Keiser. At the 9:25 mark, Tyler Brickler struck to
make it a 3-0 Ice Knights’ lead. Potsdam freshman forward Jake Rivera
(Pacific Palisades, Calif./Hartford Wolfpack) had a goal waved off 48
seconds later. Geneseo made the Bears pay 37 seconds after that as Ryan
Donnelly beat Keiser glove-side. Junior goalie Shane Talarico (Greensburg,
Pa./Elmira College) replaced Keiser after the goal. At 16:49, the Ice
Knights went on a five-minute power play and Zachary Vit added a fifth
goal 49 seconds later. Potsdam trailed 5-0 after 40 minutes.

Nate Brown made it 6-0 1:40 into the second period, while still on the
major power play. At the 6:26 mark, Corbin Rosmarin scored another power
play goal. Less than two minutes later, Carson Schell buried the puck off

RUFF RELIEVED OF DUTIES AS SABRES’ HEAD COACH;
ROLSTON NAMED INTERIM COACH

BUFFALO, N.Y. (February 20, 2013) — Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier today announced that Lindy Ruff has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the Buffalo Sabres. Regier also announced that Ron Rolston will serve as the interim head coach of the Sabres, beginning with the team’s game against Toronto tomorrow.

Statement from Sabres owner Terry Pegula:

“The hockey world knows how I and the entire Buffalo Sabres organization feel about Lindy Ruff not only as a coach but also as a person. His long tenure with the Sabres has ended. His qualities have made this decision very difficult. I personally want Lindy to know that he can consider me a friend always.”

Rolston becomes the 16th head coach in franchise history and joins the Sabres after spending the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons as head coach of the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League (AHL). As head coach of the Americans, Rolston compiled a 63-44-17 regular-season record.

Prior to joining the Americans, Rolston spent seven seasons as head coach with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program, where he became the first coach in U.S. history to lead the United States Under-18 team to three gold medals (2005, 2009, 2011) at the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Under-18 Championship, adding a silver medal (2007) in his other appearance as head coach.

In addition to coaching at the Under-18 and Under-17 levels, Rolston also served as head coach for the U.S. National Junior Team at the IIHF U20 World Championship in 2007 and 2009. In 2007, he led Team USA to the bronze medal.

Rolston joined USA Hockey after serving as an assistant coach at four different NCAA Division I hockey programs (Lake Superior State University, 1990-1995; Clarkson University, 1996-1999; Harvard University, 1999-2002; Boston College, 2002-2004) between 1990 and 2004, winning National Championships in 1992 and 1994 with Lake Superior State University.
