The Iroquois Varsity Boys Hockey team lost twice during the games over the Christmas holidays. They lost 6-1 to St. Joe’s on December 22nd and to the Cheektowaga Warriors 4-2 on December 28th. The December 28th game against Cheektowaga started strong with the Chiefs jumping out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Sasha Hawkins and Andrew Takac, with assists from Mark Morganti and Patrick Stenzel. The Warriors then showed why they are undefeated this season as they continued to apply pressure and eventually scored 4 goals over the next two periods for the win. Chiefs goalie Robert Bauer was outstanding in the game, making many spectacular saves to keep his team in the game as long as possible.

The next Chiefs game is Friday, January 3rd in Jamestown.

Then, with the U.S. on the power play, Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass.) beat a Canadian defender off the wall and dished the puck to Stack at the edge of the crease. Stack gathered the puck, deked and scored at 3:23to increase Team USA’s advantage to 2-0.

Bozek pushed the U.S. lead to 3-0 with a power-play marker of her own with 16:54 gone in the middle stanza. After Stack won an offensive-zone faceoff, Bozek sent a slap-shot from the point through traffic and under Lacasse’s glove.

Natalie Spooner scored on a two-on-one late in the second frame before Brianne Jenner connected on a shorthanded rush to cut the U.S. lead to 3-2 early in the third, but the Americans held onto the one-goal edge thanks to several tremendous stops by goaltender Molly Schaus (Natick, Mass.).

Schaus finished with 25 saves in the contest.

The Canisius College hockey team fell to 10th-ranked UMass Lowell on Saturday in the first game of the Catamount Cup in Vermont, 5-2. The loss drops the Griffs to 5-9-1 on the season, while the nationally-ranked River Hawks improve to 12-5-0.

“We have a lot of positives that we can build on from this game,” said Canisius head coachDave Smith. “Lowell was just a little more consistent in its effort and capitalized on a couple of our mistakes. We were close with our play but we didn’t write the story that we were hoping for. Our effort was there against one of the nation’s top teams but we just need to play our best hockey for a complete 60 minutes.”

Senior Taylor Law (Markham, Ontario) and junior Cody Freeman (Toronto, Ontario)both scored for the Griffs in the defeat.

Senior Tony Capobianco (Mississauga, Ontario) recorded 32 saves on the night to anchor the defense.

Canisius opened the scoring thanks to Law’s second goal of the season. The senior, making his first appearance since October, redirected the puck into the back on the power play 6:56 into the contest for the early Griffs lead. Sophomore Stephen Miller (Boxborough, Mass.) and senior Patrick Sullivan (Derby, N.Y.) each registered assists on the extra-man tally.

UMass Lowell responded though with two goals in the opening period to take a 2-1 lead into the break. Joe Pendenza took the puck to the net off a rush and finished with 8:21 remaining to tie the contest. A.J. White then gave the River Hawks the lead with three minutes left when his shot hit the post but deflected off Capobianco and into the net.

The River Hawks then extended their lead to two when Christian Folin scored 9:38 into the second frame, blasting a shot into the net from the point on the power play.

Canisius answered right back when Freeman scored his second goal of the season just 71 seconds later. Senior Duncan McKellar (Phoenix, Ariz.) sent a shot toward goal from the blue line. His shot was blocked but senior Kyle Gibbons (Westlake, Ohio) found the loose puck in the low slot and knocked it toward goal, where Freeman was waiting to tap it in.

UMass Lowell, however, would seal the victory with two goals just 79 seconds apart late in the second frame. Josh Holmstrom redirected a puck in for the 4-2 lead with 2:53 remaining in the period before Ryan McGrath scored on a breakaway with 1:34 left for the 5-2 final score.

The River Hawks finished the game with a 37-23 advantage in shots in the game with both teams scoring one power-play goal (four attempts for Canisius and three for UMass Lowell).

Connor Hellebuyck recorded 21 saves to earn the victory in net.

The Buffalo Sabres  announced that Janice Cavaretta has been named as the 2013 recipient of the J. Michael Duffett Memorial Award, presented each year to the coach or administrator whose contributions to amateur hockey in Western New York “best exemplify the knowledge, teaching, love of the game and gentle humanity of Mike.”  The award was  presented to Cavaretta at the Dec. 19 Sabres game against the Boston Bruins.

Cavaretta will be the first woman to receive the award in its 30 years of existence.  She has been heavily involved with various youth hockey programs in the area including serving as USA Hockey Associate Registrar and the Western Section Administrator, Qualifying Games Coordinator and Credential Review Chair for more than 10 years. Additionally, she was the Executive Director of the Western New York Amateur Hockey League for 14 years. She is currently an assistant coach in the Buffalo Regals organization.
A graduate of USA Hockey’s Coaching Education Program at Colorado College, Cavaretta achieved Master’s Level 5 Accreditation in the prestigious program. As a player growing up, she captained numerous teams in addition to winning state and national titles at all age levels.
Cavaretta says she is grateful for the magnitude of support that her father, Tony Rozek Sr., provided over her hockey career both on and off the ice.  “He was with me for many of my early years and was very influential in my career playing, coaching and also on the administrative side,” Cavaretta explained.  “I would have never continued if it was not for him.”
J. Michael Duffett was a student of the game and a coach with the Buffalo Bisons and the Amherst Hockey Association. A standout player at Nichols School and Clarkson University, Duffett was working in the Sabres hockey department under Scotty Bowman and Roger Neilson at the time of his death after a battle with cancer. In 1984, the Buffalo Sabres established the J. Michael Duffett Award in his memory.

U.S. National Junior Team Loses to Sweden, 4-2,
In Pre-Tournament Game
Hartman and O’Regan Score
ANGELHOLM, Sweden – The U.S. National Junior Team lost to Sweden, 4-2, tonight in pre-tournament action at Lindab Arena. Ryan Hartman (West Dundee, Ill.) and Dan O’Regan (Needham, Mass./Boston University) supplied the U.S. goals.

Team USA is holding training camp for the 2014 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in Angelholm until Dec. 23. The U.S. has a final pre-tournament game Sunday (Dec. 22) vs. Finland. Tournament play in Malmo, Sweden, begins Dec. 26.

“There was a lot to like in how we played tonight,” said Don Lucia, head coach of the U.S. National Junior Team. “I thought we had vast improvement in our game since we last played. I thought we played with very good energy, especially after the first period. We got pucks in deep and a lot of good looks. Unfortunately, it was one of those nights where their goalie made some outstanding saves. Five-on-five, we scored a couple good deflection goals. The minus was that we gave up two power-play goals.”
During a power play at 6:54 of the first period, Sweden’s Andreas Johnson one-timed a shot from the left slot high into the net for a 1-0 advantage.

Sweden doubled its lead with 21 seconds left in the opening frame when Alexander Wennberg swatted a high rebound into the goal from the edge of the crease.

Neither team scored in the second period, though USA doubled Sweden in shots on goal, 12-6, for a two-period shot advantage of 23-12.

Hartman cut the U.S. deficit in half at 1:43 of the third period. Ian McCoshen (Hudson, Wis./Boston College) stopped a Sweden clearing attempt and wristed a shot that Hartman tipped out of midair in the low slot.

Sebastian Collberg reclaimed Sweden’s two-goal lead by speeding through the right circle and firing a hard wrist shot into the near top corner.

While on the power play, Sweden buried a rebound at 17:25 to gain a 4-1 advantage.

Team USA capped the scoring at 19:04 when O’Regan redirected a left point shot by Jaccob Slavin(Erie, Colo./Colorado College). Riley Barber (Pittsburgh, Pa./Miami Univ.) also assisted.

Anthony Stolarz (Edison, N.J.) made 19 saves in the loss. His counterpart, Oscar Dansk, stopped 36 shots.

Team USA is back on the ice Sunday (Dec. 22) when it takes on Finland in the pre-tournament finale in Angelholm, Sweden. Game time is 1:30 p.m. (7:30 a.m. ET).
