0

Ott named ECAC West Rookie of the Year, Tardelli, Brittany Lucky earn
conference honors

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Three SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey players have earned
All-ECAC West honors for the 2013-14 season. Freshman forward Jordan Ott
(Hilton, N.Y./Rochester Edge) was voted the conference’s Rookie of the
Year as well as being named to the second and all-rookie teams. Senior
captain Brittany Lucky (Kanata, Ontario/Ottawa Senators) garnered
honorable mention status, while freshman goaltender Abby Tardelli
(Potsdam, N.Y./North Country Ice Storm) earned a spot on the conference’s
all-rookie team.

Ott got off to a torrid pace with two points in the season opener and
never slowed down. She had 12 multiple point games and two hat tricks en
route to a Bears’ single-season record 36 points. She also set Potsdam
single-season marks in goals (22) and power-play goals (9). Ott is sixth
in the nation in scoring, second among rookies, with 1.50 points-per-game.
She is also second nationally in goals-per-game (0.92) and power-play
goals.

Lucky is fourth on the team in scoring this year with three goals and
Bears’ record 22 assists for 25 points. The senior’s average of 1.00
points-per-game is fourth best in the nation among defenseman and her 0.88
assists-per-game place her eighth in the NCAA. Lucky leads the ECAC West
in conference assists (16) and power-play points (11) and is second in
scoring by defenseman (2g, 16a, 18pts). She is fourth on Potsdam’s
all-time scoring list with 15 goals and 44 assists for 59 points in 100
games.

Tardelli put up strong numbers in her rookie season with the Bears. On
Nov. 2, the Potsdam native got the start in between the pipes in her
hometown as the College re-opened newly renovated Maxcy Ice Arena. She
stopped all 20 shots she faced in 31:15 against Saint Michael’s despite
getting a no-decision. She then earned her first collegiate win and
shutout on Dec. 6, blanking the very same Purple Knights 2-0 with 19
saves. She finished the regular season with a 2-5 record in six starts, a
3.79 goals-against-average and a .892 save percentage.

The Bears (12-9-4, 7-5-4 ECAC West) return to the postseason for the third
straight year this weekend when they head back to the Utica Auditorium to
face Utica College in the first round of the playoffs. The teams square
off at noon on Sunday, March 2, with a trip to the ECAC West semifinals at

Elmira College junior defensemen Brooke Wilgosh (Regina, Saskatchewan) was selected Defensive Player of the Year and Potsdam State freshman forward Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y.) was voted Rookie of the Year. The voting for the ECAC Women’s West All-Conference Teams and major award winners was completed by the head coaches within the ECAC Women’s West.

Offensively, Wilgosh leads the conference in defenseman scoring, netting seven goals and handing out 19 assists for 26 points during the regular season. She was named the ECAC Women’s West Player of the Week on Nov. 20, after collecting five points in a weekend sweep of SUNY Potsdam.

Ott led the Potsdam Bears to a 12-9-4 overall record and 7-5-4 conference mark to secure the No. 5 seed in the ECAC Women’s West Tournament. Ott was named ECAC Women’s West Rookie of the Week eight times this season.

Houle earned his sixth Coach of the Year honor after guiding the Cardinals to a share of the ECAC Women’s West regular season crown with a 15-1 conference record and a 23-1-1 overall record. In his eleven seasons behind the bench, Houle has compiled a 256-42-20 record and owns an .836 winning percentage, which ranks first among all active women’s coaches. During his tenure, Plattsburgh has qualified for the NCAA Tournament nine times, while winning eight conference regular-season titles and three ECAC Women’s West Tournament Championships.

The 2014 ECAC Women’s West Hockey Tournament begins on Saturday March 1 and concludes Sunday, March 9. RIT Men Close Out Ritter Arena TONIGHT (March 1)

0
The RIT men’s hockey team wraps up the regular season with a home-and-home series against Atlantic Hockey Association rival Canisius on Friday and Saturday, with both games getting underway at 7:05 p.m. Friday’s game is at the Buffalo State Ice Arena and Saturday’s game will be the final contest in the 46-year history of Ritter Arena.

M and E Engineering and Salvatore’s Old Fashioned Pizzeria are Saturday’s game sponsors. On Saturday, RIT Athletics, in conjunction with the RIT men’s hockey team will conduct a free sweepstakes for a chance to shoot three pucks into the net through a five-inch opening for a chance to win Free Textbooks for the Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 Semesters courtesy of Barnes and Noble Bookstore @ RIT (maximum value, $1,000 for registered classes). The odds of winning depend on the number of qualified entries received and successful completion of the Barnes and Noble @ RIT shootout.

Saturday will be the final RIT men’s hockey game at historic Ritter Arena, as the team moves into the Gene Polisseni Center in time for the 2014-15 season. Since moving to Division I in 2005, RIT is 85-47-18 at the 2,100-seat arena and 68-25-15 against AHA foes at home. Ritter Arena has been the home of the Tigers for 46 years and was the site of countless ECAC West Championship games, AHA Quarterfinal games, and the 1989 and 2001 NCAA Division III National Championship games.

RIT currently has 19 points in AHA play, which puts them in a tie for tenth place with American International. Canisius is tied for sixth in the league standings with 25 points. If the season ended before this weekend’s games, RIT would travel to Canisius for a first round series.

On Saturday, RIT will honor seniors Nolan Descoteaux (Dallas, TX/South Shore Kings), Mike Colavecchia (Maple, Ontario/Lindsay Muskies), Eliot Raibl (Vancouver, British Columbia/Quesnel Millionaires), Ben Lynch (Blaine, MN/Lincoln Stars),Adam Mitchell (Crofton, MD/Baystate Breakers), and Greg Noyes (Lucan, Ontario/Salmon Arm Silverbacks). This group has helped lead RIT to a 63-60-24 record in four seasons. As freshmen and sophomores, this group helped lead RIT to back-to-back Atlantic Hockey Association Championship games and the 2011 Vermont Catamount Cup Championship. Last year, RIT defeated national power Michigan. The group has combined for 146 goals, 243 assists, and 389 points in 771 games played.

RIT split a two-game series at Air Force last weekend, falling by a score of 4-3 on Friday, while rallying to win by a score of 3-2on Saturday. On Friday, Ben Lynch (Blaine, MN/Lincoln Stars) had a goal and an assist. On Saturday, Josh Mitchell (Osoyoos, British Columbia/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) scored the game-winning goal with 9:22 left in regulation, while Mike Rotolo(Rochester, NY/Cedar Rapids Roughriders) made 26 saves. The win on Saturday snapped a nine-game winless streak and was RIT’s first victory in 35 days.

Colavecchia leads the team in scoring with 29 points on 12 goals and 17 assists. Lynch and Dan Schuler (Webster, NY/Powell River Kings) are right behind with 11 goals. Noyes leads all RIT defensemen in scoring with 23 points. In net, Rotolo is 6-7-3 with a 2.99 goals against average and .905 save percentage.

RIT’s power-play is sixth nationally at 22.6 percent. The RIT penalty-killing unit has allowed just five goals over its last 12 games, killing off 51 of its opponents last 56 attempts with the man-advantage (91.1 percent).

Canisius enters the weekend tied for sixth in the AHA standings with 25 points after splitting a home-and-home series against Robert Morris last weekend. Kyle Gibbons leads the team in scoring with 30 points on 13 goals and 17 assists, while Ralph Cuddemi and Patrick Sullivan have 10 goals apiece. Canisius is being outscored by its opponents, 100-91 this season. In net, Tony Capobianco has played 24 games in net for the Golden Griffins, recording an 8-11-2 record with a 3.06 goals against average and .907 save percentage. Keegan Asmundson is 4-6-1 with a 2.45 goals against average and .927 save percentage.

RIT and Canisius have enjoyed a long rivalry, as both members of the ECAC West Conference and as AHA schools. RIT is 55-19-1 all-time against the Golden Griffins and 16-9-0 since the start of the 2005-06 season. Canisius has won the last four meetings against RIT, including a 5-2 contest in Buffalo on Nov. 19. Dan Schuler (Webster, NY/Powell River Kings) scored both RIT goals,2:02 apart in the first period, while Todd Skirving (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Sioux Falls Stampede) dished out a pair of assists.

THIS WEEK: SENIOR WEEKEND AT STARR
The Raiders will be in action for the final time in the regular season this weekend as Colgate hosts Harvard and Dartmouth. Both schools are tied for 10th in ECAC Hockey with 14 points, but are still alive in the hunt for a home playoff series in the first round of the conference tournament. The Crimson are coming off a weekend sweep by Yale and Brown at home, while the Big Green earned three league points with a win over the Bears and a tie versus the Bulldogs.

NEXT UP: A WEEK OFF BEFORE QUARTERFINALS
Colgate is set to take a week off after this weekend as the Raiders earned a first-round bye in the ECAC Hockey Tournament. Colgate’s possible opponent will not be determined until the first round is over due to the re-seeding of teams after the opening series. The Raiders face the second-lowest seed to advance in the quarterfinals. Tickets are on sale now for the weekend of March 14-16.

NOW IN BOTH POLLS
The Raiders joined both polls for the first time this season as Colgate is ranked 15th in the USA Hockey/USA Hockey Magazine National Poll. The Raiders are in the USCHO National Poll for the third-straight week at No. 16, which is a season high. Colgate is one of five teams in the league that are ranked, joining Union, Quinnipiac, Cornell and Yale.

SENIOR NIGHT SATURDAY
Colgate will honor two of its seniors on Saturday night as they will be playing in their final regular season game at Starr Rink. Eric Mihalik and Mike McCann have made significant contributions to the program since arriving on campus. Mihalik ranks 10th all-time in wins with 31 in his career and has played in 82 career games, which is fifth all-time. He currently ranks fourth in goals against average at 2.85 and his .901 save percentage is in the top-10. McCann has appeared in 138 games for the Raiders entering the weekend. He has 29 career points on 15 goals and 14 helpers. His seven goals this year are a career best.

LEAGUE VICTORIES
This year has been one of the most successful conference years under head coach Don Vaughan. The Raiders have 12 wins in ECAC Hockey with a 7-2-2 mark in the second half of the season. The 12 victories in league is the most since Colgate had 14 in 2005-06. The Raiders won their second Cleary Cup title that year and made the final four of the conference tournament.

BYE CLINCHED
Colgate has earned a first-round bye in the upcoming ECAC Hockey Tournament for the second time in the last three seasons. The Raiders can finish between the second and fourth spots in the standings after this weekend. Union has already clinched the Cleary Cup for regular season champions. The Raiders will not know their opponent until the conclusion of all four first round series as the league reseeds.

SPINK TWINS TAKE TURNS
Friday night at Princeton it was Tyson Spink and then on Saturday it was Tylor Spink at Quinnipiac that led the Raiders to each win. Tyson tallied his first career multi-goal game with a hat trick at Hobey Baker Rink with one of the goals coming on the power play. Tylor had two assists against the Tigers, but turned in his best performance against Quinnipiac with two goals, including the gamewinner.

SECOND HALF SUCCESS
The Raiders have enjoyed success in the second half of the season with a 9-2-3 record to get them in the top-20 in the country. It has not come easy with many games against ranked opponents. However, this team is 5-1-2 against top-20 teams in 2014. The Raiders have averaged 3.5 goals per game during the second half and are allowing just under two per game.

THE IMPORTANT FIRST GOAL
Colgate scored the first goal in both games last weekend and has done it in 17 games this year. The Raiders have won 12 of those games and tied three. In 15 of the 16 wins, Colgate has had the lead or has been tied after the first period. The Raiders are 15-1-4 with the lead or tied after 20 minutes. The lone come-from-behind win was again Union on Nov. 8when the Raiders scored three in the final period to win 5-3 on the road.

DOMINATING CLASS
The sophomore class continues to put up numbers and it continued last weekend as the Class of 2016 tallied eight of the nine goals in the two wins with five coming from the Spink twins. Overall the class has 59 of the 94 scored by the Raiders, which is 63 percent of the scoring output on the team. They have 89 assists for a total of 148 points. That number is 60 percent of the points scored this season. The top five scorers for Colgate are sophomores and all have over 20 points. The top line of the Spinks and Kyle Baun have accounted for 77 point this year.

SCOUTING THE CRIMSON
Harvard is coming off a weekend sweep at the hands of Yale and Brown at home. The Crimson lost to the Bulldogs by a 5-2 score and then was shutout by the Bears at 2-0. Harvard had built momentum into the weekend with a four-game unbeaten streak. The Crimson had wins over Clarkson and St. Lawrence on the road during the streak and a 6-2 win in the consolation game of the Beanpot Tournament against Boston University. Harvard is still alive for a home playoff series with a 5-11-4 conference mark and a 9-14-4 overall record.

The Crimson’s roster is loaded with NHL draft picks with nine of them, which is the most among ECAC Hockey teams. Jimmy Vesey leads the way with 22 points on 13 goals and nine assists. Five of his 13 goals have been gamewinners and four have come on the power play. Kyle Criscuolo is tied with Vesey for the team lead in power play goals and has 19 points on 11 goals and eight assists. Sean Malone has 18 points on five goals and 13 helpers as a rookie. The power play has had its struggles this season with only 16 goals in 110 chances for a 14.5 percent efficiency.

In goal, Harvard has had two capable netminders all season in Steve Michalek and Raphael Girard. Michalek has played in 15 games and has a 2.41 goals against average and a .922 save percentage. Girard has great conference numbers with a 1.99 GAA and a .938 save percentage. Both lead the league.

SERIES HISTORY
Colgate and Harvard will be facing each other for the 78th time since the first meeting back in 1960-61, which was the opening season of ECAC Hockey. The Crimson hold a 47-23-7 advantage in the series, but the matchup has been even as of late with Colgate having a slim series lead at 5-4-3 margin in the last 12 meetings. The two teams have played 11 overtime contests with Harvard owning a 4-1-6 record in those games.

SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN
Dartmouth had a rough start to the season with eight-straight losses and had a winless streak of five games in January, but the Big Green has seen success as of late. Dartmouth is riding a four-game unbeaten streak into the weekend. The Big Green beat Brown and tied Yale at home in its last two games. The tie with the Elis helped Colgate secure a first-round bye in the ECAC Hockey Tournament. Defense has been an issue as Dartmouth has allowed around 3.5 goals per game this season. With the recent success, the Big Green is 10th in the standings with 14 points and is three points back of hosting a first-round series.

Eric Neiley leads the way with 22 points on 12 goals and 10 assists. He has four power play goals, which is tied with Brandon McNally for tops on the team. McNally has 17 points for second on the team with five goals and a team high 12 helpers. Rookie Grant Opperman has been a bright spot with 15 points on eight goals and seven assists. Dartmouth has missed its top scorer from a season ago in seven of its games as Tyler Sikura has nine points in 18 games played. He had the gamewinner on Friday night against Brown in the 2-1 win.

In goal, Charles Grant has played in 18 games and has a 6-9-3 record. He has a 3.24 goals against average and a .901 save percentage. Grant has been in goal every night of the unbeaten streak and has allowed more than one goal only once.

SERIES HISTORY
The Dartmouth-Colgate series is one of the most competitive in the country with the Big Green leading the series at 45-43-5. The series has gone to overtime 14 times with Colgate holding a 5-4-5 advantage after the 14th time in 2011. Colgate earned a 4-1 win in January at Thompson Arena.  These two teams played the longest game in Colgate history as it was just over 121 minutes long with Kyle Wilson ’06 scoring the gamewinner in 2003 in a 4-3 win. The series began in 1928-29 with Dartmouth winning 9-1 in Hamilton.

Hobart Defeats Nazareth; Advances to Semi-Final

0

The Hobart College hockey team took a 2-1 lead in the first period and held on to defeat sixth-seeded Nazareth College by that score in an ECAC West quarterfinal played tonight at The Cooler. The No. 3 seed Statesmen improve to 14-8-1 overall and advance to the semifinals.

Hobart will face No. 2 seeded Elmira in a semifinal game at the Soaring Eagles’ Murray Athletic Center on Saturday, March 1, at 7 p.m. It will be the third time in nine days that Elmira and Hobart will face off.

It was the fourth meeting between the Statesmen and the Golden Flyers this season. Hobart finishes the year with a 2-1-1 advantage in those meetings. Nazareth finished its season with an 8-16-2 overall record.

Five different Statesmen earned a point in the win. Sophomore goalie Lino Chimienti (Montreal, Quebec) topped his career-high in saves set in last Saturday’s win over Elmira, turning aside 45 shots in all 60 minutes in goal tonight.

The Statesmen jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 34 seconds into the first period. Junior Ian Coleman sent a pass ahead to classmate Tommaso Traversa (Torino, Italy) who was streaking in. Traversa laid out to tip a pass to senior Tommy Fiorentino (New Hartford, N.Y.) who slid his shot underneath Nazareth’s goalie, Ed Zdolshek. It was Fiorentino’s eighth tally this year. First-year Nick Bingaman (Bedford, N.Y.) made it 2-0 with 1:07 left in the opening period. After a Golden Flyers turnover at center ice, junior Ryan Michel (Camillus, N.Y.) sent a pass to Bingaman who had a one-on-one with Zdolshek and lifted a shot over his shoulder. It was Bingaman’s sixth goal this year and proved to be the game-winning goal.

Don Oliveri put Nazareth on the scoreboard with just nine seconds left in the first. Chris Murray won a faceoff for the Golden Flyers in their offensive end and Oliveri collected the puck and immediately fired into the top right corner of the goal.

The second and third periods proved scoreless. The Golden Flyers controlled a lot of the momentum in the middle period out-shooting the Statesmen 21-13, but the Hobart defense held strong. Nazareth also held a 13-8 edge in shots in the third period. It seemed the Golden Flyers may have scored the game-tying goal with 6:18 left in the third, but it was called off because a rebound was kicked across the line by one of the Nazareth players. With just over five minutes remaining, Oliveri came inches away from scoring again as he blasted a shot off the right post.

The Statesmen penalty kill unit came through in a big way, killing all five Nazareth power plays, including one with 3:23 to go in the final period. The Golden Flyers pulled Zdolshek twice in the final minutes, but were unable to capitalize with the extra skater. Zdolshek finished with 32 saves in 59:10 in goal for Nazareth.

Nazareth finished with a 46-34 edge in total shots. The Statesmen went 0-for-2 on the power play.

O’Neill has played in 71 career games and has logged eight goals and 33 assists for 41 career points. He was selected the All-ECAC West Co-Rookie of the Year and earned a spot on the all-rookie team in 2012.

Michel earned second team honors for the second year in a row. He ranks second on the team with 16 assists this season. Michel notched a season-high three helpers in two games this year, a 7-4 win at Cortland and in a 5-1 win over Nazareth. He ranks second in the ECAC West and 26th in the country in defenseman scoring. Michel is tied for seventh in the conference in assists and is tied sixth in power-play points (11). Gamache ranks second on the team with 25 points on 10 goals and 15 assists. He ranks second in the ECAC West and is tied for 10th in the nation with seven power-play goals. Gamache ranks in the top 10 in the conference in eight statistical categories. He’s tied for second in power-play points (14), tied for third in short-handed points (4), tied for sixth in short-handed goals (1), tied for seventh in game-winning goals (2), tied for eighth in points, and tied for 10th in goals and assists. Gamache has produced at least one point in 18 games this season and posted two or more points five times. He logged a season-high three points twice, in 5-1 wins over Manhattanville and Nazareth. Gamache notched the game winner in victories over Cortland and Nazareth.

Gamache has played in 49 career games, posting 18 goals and 21 assists for 39 points. He is currently tied for 10th on the Hobart list for power-play goals in a season.

Belizario posted five goals and 10 assists for 15 points in his rookie season. He logged a season-high three points on three assists in a 5-2 win at Salve Regina and scored the game-winning goal in a 4-1 victory at Nichols. Belizario was tabbed the ECAC West Rookie of the Week once this season. He is tied for third in the league in defensemen scoring and tied for fourth in first-year scoring. Belizario plays a key role in the Statesmen defensive unit that earned a 5-0 shutout of Manhattanville to start the year and is limiting opponents to 2.84 goals per game. He was named to the Buck Supply Winter Classic All-Tournament Team earlier this year.

Third-seeded Hobart will be in action tonight, Feb. 26 when it hosts No. 6 seed Nazareth in an ECAC West tournament quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Fans who can’t make it to The Cooler can follow the action online with Live Stats.

St. Joe’s 4 – Bishop Timon-St. Jude 2
After a shaky start to the season led to a 6-10 record, head coach Rich Crozier rallied his St. Joe’s squad in the face of adversity. Their journey back to the top of the Monsignor Martin Association concluded with a gritty, hard-fought 4-2 victory over Bishop Timon-St. Jude.
St. Joe’s goaltender and championship MVP Peter Chopra was phenomenal in net for the Marauders, stopping 29 of 31 Timon shots in the win. Dominic Perna led all scorers in the game with two goals and an assist. Connor McKenna and Nicholas Zenger also scored as St. Joe’s beat Timon for the second straight year in the Monsignor Martin championship.“This one’s a little bit different from last year,” Crozier said. “Obviously we’re playing some great hockey at the right time. There was certainly a lot of pressure last year to win it. This year, we felt that we needed to peak at the right time, and thankfully for our sake that happened.”Jack Robinson and Justin Blake scored for the Tigers in the loss. Most notably, St. Joe’s was able to keep Section VI’s leading scorer, Timon forward Connor Fields, off the scoresheet.“They’re a great team,” Crozier said in reference to Timon. “We needed to change some things up. I’m just proud of these boys that they bought into it. As a couple of coaches alluded to, we’ve been fortunate enough over the last year or two that we’ve been able to just put a system together and flex our muscles.“The plan was to stop certain players on their team, and the fact that after 15 minutes they hadn’t scored on us, that was a relief and certainly it started to build even more momentum for us to believe we could do this.”Chopra’s play in net led the way for the Marauders, and the goaltender was awarded the team’s hard hat after the game for the effort exerted in limiting the Timon attack. Crozier was quick to credit Chopra for keeping the team in the game.“Here’s a kid that had a devastating loss last year in the championship, 3-2 in overtime. It’s a tough way to lose a game, and you know he had something to prove. Peter’s been fantastic; he was outstanding against Canisius [in the semifinals], and then today as well. He was the MVP, in my opinion.”Having senior leadership from players like Perna was a huge boon for Crozier’s squad as they turned their season around.“Dom’s a unique talent, and we’re very fortunate to have him. I would agree that we leaned on our senior leadership, and then a couple of those younger guys that were here last year.”St. Joe’s will now travel to Long Island to compete in the NY State Catholic high school hockey championship. The Marauders will take on St. Anthony’s at Nassau Coliseum on March 1 at 6:15 p.m.

Williamsville East 3 – Kenmore East 2
For the third time in four seasons, the Williamsville East Flames and Kenmore East Bulldogs met in the Federation small school championship. After winning in 2011 and losing in 2012, Williamsville East found the perseverance to defeat the Kenmore East Bulldogs this time around by a score of 3-2.
Senior captain Jason Cohen led the Flames with two points in the game, including the game-winning goal in the third period.“Coach [Mike Torrillo] always just says get it to the net, we do that all the time in practice. I just saw it there, I actually tried to get it to my buddy [Alex] Finley up in front, but the puck was just laying there. I was having a pretty bad game, so I just redeemed myself and kept going at it, and it crossed the line. It was the best feeling in the world.”Cohen has been a member of all of the last four Williamsville East teams to appear in the championship game. This win was his second with the Flames, the other being a win over Kenmore East back in 2011. Cohen and the Flames lost to Kenmore East and West Seneca West in 2012 and 2013, respectively.“First year we won, it was the best year of my life. Second year we came back against these guys, and they took it to us pretty hard [Kenmore East won that game by a score of 9-2]. The third year was a nail-biter. But I love the team this year, we all have good chemistry and work for each other, and it was nice to get the win.”The game began at a rapid pace, with Williamsville East’s Mike Mostowy and Kenmore East’s David Christopher trading goals in the game’s first four minutes. That tie would last until 23 seconds into the second period, as Trevor Pray gave the Bulldogs their only lead of the game.Dylan Cicero beat Kenmore East goaltender Luke Stewart at the 8:25 mark of the second period with assists from Cohen and Matt Steffan, and then Cohen’s third-period goal proved to be the one to clinch the championship.

Niagara-Wheatfield 3 – Williamsville North 2
Before the year, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons set out to do what no Section VI team had done before: win three consecutive championships. It took three goals for the Falcons to win that third championship over the Williamsville North Spartans by a score of 3-2.Justin Durkee, the Falcons’ leading scorer, provided the game-winning goal at 8:49 of the second period. Domenic Senese and James Stenzel led all Niagara-Wheatfield scorers with a goal and an assist each.Williamsville North got on the board early with two goals in the first 1:46 of play on Falcons goaltender Nate Sommers. Zach Kurbiel got the scoring started 59 seconds into the first period, followed by Brian Couto just 47 seconds later on a long shot from the point that made its way through a maze of players in front. After the quick start, Niagara-Wheatfield head coach Rick Wrazin had to help his team wipe the slate clean and play a much better game over the final 43 minutes of regulation.“It wasn’t the way we wanted to start the game, that’s for sure,” Wrazin said. “I can’t say enough of how I proud I am [of the team] for coming back after dropping two. You see a lot of good teams, in a game like that, have that kind of start and end up giving it away. They hung in there, they came back.”While the Falcons were held scoreless most of the first, they controlled much of the possession through the period. Niagara-Wheatfield finally got on the board with 1:01 left in the first period on a goal by Senese. The second period was where the game was won by the Falcons. Just over six minutes into the period, Stenzel beat Spartans goaltender Matthew Ladd assisted by Senese and Dakota Becker. At the 8:49 mark of the second, it was Durkee who found the puck to the right of Ladd and buried the rebound for the eventual game-winning goal.Durkee, who was also named MVP of the game, was at a loss for words talking about the feelings of scoring the championship-winning goal.“It feels good, I don’t really know how to explain it,” he said. “I just remember [forward Matt] Paonessa was in the corner, and they were all over him for that shift. He just passed it in front, and I was stunned at first when I got it, but eventually I put it in. He’s unbelievable at passing so I knew I was going to get it.”Wrazin acknowledged that the secondary scoring was necessary to pull out the win against a great team like Williamsville North.“For us, we counted on our one line most of the year, so it’s great to see it spreading around in the playoffs. We knew we had guys that could do it; they were squeezing the stick a little bit earlier in the season. When it comes time for the playoffs, everyone’s got to play the same way and they got back to playing hockey the right way and now the points and the goals are coming for them.”The three-time defending champions were elated that they met the lofty goals set before the offseason. The win against Williamsville North represented a tremendous accomplishment for the Niagara-Wheatfield program.“We had the goal of the ‘threepeat’ from the start, but we didn’t say it,” said Wrazin. “We said early on it was our goal to win the third, and then we decided we weren’t going to talk about it again. We knew we wanted it, and I can’t say enough how proud I am of them for bearing down at the end of the season.”
