Amanda Boulier scored the three-goal hat trick while teammates Haylea Schmid and Allie Thunstrom each added two goals apiece to lead the Minnesota Whitecaps to a 9-3 win over the Buffalo Beauts Sunday afternoon. It was the Beauts final regular season game, as well as home game, for their 2019-20 NWHL season.

For the hometown crowd on hand at the Northtown Center, the first period of the game proved to be quite entertaining. They saw the Beauts take a quick 1-0 lead just :59 into the period on a goal by Cassidy MacPherson.

Following another quick goal, this one by Minnesota’s Jonna Curtis to tie the game, 1-1, the Beauts once again took the lead at the 6:30 mark of the first period. The goal was credited to Marie-Jo Pelletier.

But that lead disappeared just a couple of minutes later when Boulier scored the first of her three goals. The 2-2 deadlock lasted into the second period.

The wheels then fell off the Beauts wagon in the second period after the Whitecaps scored six straight goals to take a commanding 8-2 lead.  Minnesota continued to build on their lead added another goal in the third stanza to lead 9-2.

The Beauts rounded out the scoring with a third, and final, goal at the 10:15 mark by Becki Bowering to make the final, 9-3.

GAME NOTES: Minnesota outshot Buffalo for the game, 36-20…Lauren Barnes had a three-point game with three assists for the Whitecaps…the three stars of the game all went to Whitecaps including 3rd star, Schmid; 2nd star, Thunstrom; 1st star, Boulier.

Clarkson Men Blank Dartmouth On Senior Night

0

With a strong push over the final 40 minutes, Clarkson was able to pull away from Dartmouth for a 4-0 victory on Senior Night at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights, who improved to 16-4 in ECAC Hockey for its most wins in league play since the 1998-99 campaign, have secured at least 2nd place in the conference standings and can finish first with a weekend sweep in Central NY next weekend. Clarkson plays at Colgate on Friday and then closes out the regular season at current ECAC Hockey front-runner Cornell on Saturday.

Ranked 5/6th in the national polls, Clarkson has skated to its most overall wins since the 1996-97 season with a 23-7-2 record.

Postgame audio Head Coach Casey Jones

Clarkson’s Class of 2020 enjoyed their night at Cheel. Goaltender Frank Marotte (Longueuil. QUE) posted 27 saves for his fourth shutout as a Golden Knight, right wing Haralds Egle (Liepaja, Latvia) scored twice for his third career multiple-goal outing and left wing Captain Devin Brosseau (St. Lambert, QUE) recorded two assists.

Junior center Zack Tsekos (Montreal, QUE) and sophomore defenseman Brian Hurley (Dellwood, MN) scored the other goals for the Green and Gold.

Clarkson started out slow as the Big Green enjoyed an 8-2 shot advantage before the Knights went on the first power play of the game at 12:31 of the first period. Although the Knights did not score, they did start to build some momentum.

Clarkson, which held a 19-5 shot advantage in the middle frame broke the scoreless deadlock early in the second period. Brosseau won a faceoff in the Dartmouth zone and passed off to Egle, who scored in front at 4:17 for the only goal the Green and Gold would need.

With three third-period tallies, the Knights put the game away.

Early in the final frame, sophomore Jamie Collins (Fergus, ONT) forced a turnover behind the Dartmouth net and fed a pass out to Hurley, who connected on a one-timer from the right circle at 3:24 for his third goal of the season.

At 13:39, Tsekos scored off a rush after sophomore Chris Klack (Georgetown, ONT) won a puck along the left boards in the neutral zone. Hurley also assisted.

Egle closed out the win with his second goal of the night and team-leading 14th of the year with 1:54 remaining. Brosseau and classmate, defenseman Shane Kuzmeski (Grayslake, IL) assisted.

Clarkson outshot the Big Green 32-27, including a 25-15 margin over the final 40 minutes.

Both teams were scoreless on the power play, the Knights 0-of-4 and Dartmouth 0-of-3.

Koz’s Men’s College Hockey Saturday Night Re-Cap

Clarence native Zach Remers scored halfway through the third period to give Buffalo State a 2-1 victory over Cortland and a tie for third place in SUNYAC with Brockport, who lost to Geneseo. Since both teams have the same number of wins, the Bengals win the third tiebreaker of common opponents starting at the top of the standings based on their 4-2 win over Geneseo in November.
Buffalo State will host sixth-seed Potsdam while Brockport hosts fifth-seed Plattsburgh Wednesday night in the first round of the playoffs.
Gordie Helmuth and freshman Tyson Gilmour each netted a pair of goals in the Knights 6-4 win. It marks Gilmour’s first two-goal game as a collegian.
Fredonia’s season comes to a close despite a late run with points in five of their last eight conference games.

Senior defenseman and co-captain Adam Brubacher tied the game with 47 seconds remaining in regulation and then netted his second of the game 1:06 in overtime to give RIT a 3-2 victory over Niagara and clinch one of the top four seeds in Atlantic Hockey.
That gives the Tigers a first round bye and home ice for the quarterfinal series.

BUFFALO, N.Y— Lila Toczek (Pendleton, NY/Starpoint) celebrated senior day with a pair of goals including the game-winner with just over two minutes remaining to pace Buffalo State to a 4-2 victory over visiting Cortland in today’s season finale.

Toczek opened the scoring with a one-timer off a feed from Carter behind the net just 2:18 into the contest, while Natasha Steinle (Morrison, CO/CIHA) drew the second assist.
Cortland evened the score with the only goal of the season period and then took its first lead of the game four minutes into the final frame.

The Teddy Bears flew when Buffalo’s Kristin Lewicki scored their first goal at 11:16 of the first period. It would be their only goal of a game that saw the Minnesota Whitecaps score four in the third for a 6-1 finish. Taylor Accursi had the assist.

The Minnesota Whitecaps got on the scoreboard just over two minutes into the game on Saturday when Minnesota’s Meghan Lorence got one past Beauts Goalie Tiffany Hus, who was a game-time change after Mariah Fujimagari was sidelined due to an injury. Nina Rodgers and Amanda Boulier had the assists.

The first period ended 2-1 after Minnesota’s Meaghan Pezon put in the second, which was the game-winner.

With no scoring action in the second, it ended 2-1.

Coming into the third, the Beauts were shorthanded but then Minnesota let go and dropped in four more goals in the third. Scoring by Jonna Curtis, Meaghan Pezon, Nina Rodgers, and a last goal by Brooke White-Lancette. Curtis had her 12th of the season and Pezon, the second of the game.

Former Buffalo Beaut Amanda Leville finished the game with 22 saves and her 14th win of the season.

“I am feeling more confident out there,” said Hus. “The whole team had some bad turnovers and then there were the penalities.”

“We just prepare for the next game,” said Hus.

Lewicki recently rejoined the team after playing the majority of the season with the PWHL, made up of many of last year’s NWHL players.

However, after playing with them she decided to return.

“It’s great to be back in Buffalo,” said Lewicki. “They were very welcoming.”

Looking back at her time with the PWHL she found that things were not what she was expecting and she was miss playing and reevaluated her situation.

Lewicki brings her speed and experience to the Buffalo Beauts as they move to the end of the season and looking toward the playoffs.

Coach Pete Perram looks ahead and not behind, but did review today’s game.

“The first period we were strong in the offensive zone but not strong in the defensive zone. Second period worked out better with changes but in the third period, is was plain and simple we gave up a penalty kill goal and that turned it for us.

“We will tighten up. This is a mentally a strong team and we will bounce back. This is not a team that gives up,” said Perram.

“We have the playoffs and every opportunity and that is our focus.

“We go in with same game plan but execute it better.

“This is a team of very skilled hockey players,” said Coach Perram.

When asked about the addition of Lewicki, Coach explained that she is an experienced and  solid player  and on the ice she is in the right spot and has the wheels and good hands.

“She brings a lot to this team.”

The Beauts face Minnesota on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Northtowns before they head on the road for their final two games at the Metropolitan Riveters February 29 and March 1.

Sunday’s game will be Buffalo’s “Hockey Fights Cancer” Day as well as the Buffalo Beauts Photo Day for fans after the game.

Reilly UCHC Goalie of the Week

0

UTICA, NY – Senior goaltender Bria Reilly (Hamden, CT/Brewster Academy) of the Utica College women’s ice hockey team has been named the United Collegiate Hockey Conference Women’s North Goaltender of the Week. The honor was announced by the conference offices in Rochester, NY.

Reilly earns the nod for her performance this past weekend in a pair of UCHC wins.

Reilly turned in two spectacular goaltending performances as she shut out King’s College and Wilkes University in her final regular season home weekend. The senior made twelve saves in an 8-0 win over King’s College, then made 30 saves in a 2-0 win over Wilkes. She now has eleven career shutouts to tie for second all-time at Utica alongside Sarah Detwiler. She is two clean sheets away from tying former NWHL goaltender Keira Goin (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Hotchkiss School) for the career mark at Utica.

The playoff-bound Pioneers wrap up the regular season this weekend with conference road games at Elmira and William Smith.

Utica & Oswego Men’s Hockey To Play 2021 Outdoor Game

0

The Utica and Oswego men’s teams will play an outdoor game on Feb. 12, 2021 at the Griffiss Business and Technology Park in Rome, N.Y.

The announcement was made in a press conference at the Adirondack Bank Center at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.

The game will be part of a weekend of premier hockey matchups featuring upstate New York rivals. The Pioneers and Lakers will face off at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 12, while the Utica Comets will take on the Syracuse Crunch on Saturday, Feb. 13 as part of the weekend festivities. The events are being held as part of a larger winter festival that is currently in the works.

This will be Utica’s first true outdoor game appearance, and will be the second special event game for the Pioneers. Both have featured UC and Oswego. The two teams faced off as part of the Frozen Dome Classic at Syracuse University’s Carrier Dome in 2014. That game still holds the NCAA Division III attendance record at 7,047.

Next year’s event will present a new opportunity to reset that record, with the Comets announcing they anticipate making nearly 16,000 seats available for the weekend’s events in a temporary venue to be constructed on the Griffiss Business and Technology Park grounds.

“We’re really excited to be one of the few Division III teams to be able to participate in an outdoor game,” Utica coach Gary Heenan said in a statement. “For it to take place down the road in Rome, which has a rich hockey tradition and is the hometown of some of our guys, is going to be extra special. We’re also excited to have Oswego as our opponent. It’s always a good game whenever our teams meet and there is certainly some extra hype around this game.”

Tickets will be $10 general admission. Fans can reserve their tickets through the Adirondack Bank Center box office in person or by calling (315) 790-9070.

COMETS ANNOUNCE 2021 AIS EMPIRE STATE CLASSIC

Utica, N.Y. – Utica Comets President Robert Esche, in conjunction with Howard Zemsky, chair of the Empire State Development Board of Directors, announced that the Comets will host the 2021 AIS Empire State Classic Outdoor Game at the Griffiss Business & Technology Park on the afternoon of Saturday, February 13, against the Syracuse Crunch. This will be the first ever outdoor game for the Utica Comets and the first American Hockey League (AHL) game played outdoors in Oneida County.

The 2021 AIS Empire State Classic is part of a larger Winter Festival that will build on the 25th anniversary of the Griffiss Local Development Corporation. The Winter Festival as a whole will celebrate the best of Oneida County, and feature a number of interactive exhibits, events and cutting-edge demonstrations. Esche explained that the exact location of the event is still to be determined, as three sites within Griffiss are currently being considered. Mohawk Valley Garden is currently working with a number of companies on orchestrating the plans for the buildout of the stadium, which will include approximately 16,000 fixed seats, a full sheet of NHL-caliber ice, portable video boards, and more.

Assured Information Security (AIS) is a cyber and information security firm founded and headquartered in Rome, New York, and maintains operating locations throughout the United States. AIS provides government and commercial customers with industry leading cyber security capabilities and services such as research, development, consulting, testing, forensics, remediation and training. “We are extremely thankful to all who are involved in making this a reality and for giving us the opportunity to be the title sponsor of the Empire State Classic,” said Dan Kalil, Vice President of Commercial Operations for AIS. “It’s going to be a great experience for the city of Rome and our region and further highlight the area’s growth, successes and opportunities.”

The 2021 AIS Empire State Classic will build upon the 7-year rivalry between the Comets and Crunch – a rivalry that has culminated each year with the awarding of the Galaxy Cup. This will be the 11th outdoor game for the American Hockey League (AHL) and the third in the state of New York. The Crunch hosted the first outdoor game in AHL history back in 2010 at the NYS Fairgrounds.

“I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of an outdoor game before and I remember what an incredible experience it was for the entire community. It is exciting to be a part of making history and I know that our fans will make this event something truly special,” commented Comets Head Coach Trent Cull. “With the game being played at Griffiss, there’s a direct link between our Purple Heart organization and our area’s military history, but also an opportunity to look ahead at all of the great work they’re doing on the base now as tech leaders.”

“The Comets staff is dedicated to making the 2021 AIS Empire State Classic the event our area has ever seen,” said Esche. “We plan to put on a truly once-in-a-lifetime, immersive experience for all ages, that our area will embrace and celebrate for years to come.”

Esche also announced that the night prior, on February 12, the Utica College Men’s Hockey team will face off in an outdoor game against their rivals, SUNY Oswego.

“This is an unbelievable opportunity for Utica College as a whole,” said Head Coach Gary Heenan. “The guys dream about playing in an outdoor game and to have it right here in our backyard is just awesome.”

Deposits are being accepted now at the Comets Box Office to secure spots for the 2021 AIS Empire State Classic. For just $25 per seat, fans can lock in their place at what is sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime event for all of New York State. The exact seat selection process will take place later this year; Season Ticket Members will have first selection, in priority order of when the deposit was received, followed by the general public in that same chronological format. Fans are encouraged to take advantage of early sales, as Esche explained that the event is expected to sell out in advance of the game.

Koz’s Friday Night Men’s College Hockey Wrap-Up

By Warren Kozireski —

Niagara junior Eric Cooley had a career-best three assist effort to lead the Purple Eagles to a 4-1 win at RIT for a crucial two points in their effort to secure a first round home playoff series. The Purps got depth scoring from Jared Brandt (3), Jon Hill (2) and Lancaster’s Ryan Cook (3) in addition to Ben Sokay netting his second-on-the-team ninth.

Sophomore Chandler Judd scored his first collegiate goal with 89 seconds remaining in regulation as Fredonia defeated Cortland 3-2 to keep their conference playoff hopes alive. The Blue Devils are one point behind Plattsburgh and Potsdam for the final spot, but five teams are within two points of each other for that same position with the season finale tomorrow.
Nazareth senior defenseman Sean Hallice scored his first collegiate goal in his 76th career game–the game-winner about midway through the third period as the Golden Flyers upset 13th nationally ranked Wilkes. With Neumann’s overtime loss to Manhattanville, Naz is two points ahead for fifth place in NCHC and will play either Elmira or Stevenson in the first round of the playoffs depending on Saturday’s results.

From New Mexico To New York, Williamsville’s Graziano Back “Home”

0

By Warren Kozireski —

If former Nichols School (Buffalo) goaltender Josh Graziano saved the clothing swag from every team he has played for since his 2014-15 season with the Buffalo Jr. Sabres Bantam Major team, he won’t need to buy anything to wear for a while.

12 teams in six years with the Buffalo Saints, Coulee Region Chill (NAHL), USNTDP Juniors, U.S. National U17 and U18, three teams in three different leagues two seasons ago in Madison (USHL), Brooks (AJHL) and Brantford (OJHL) before the New Mexico Wolves (NAHL) at the start of this season before he got a call to join Union College in December.

“Starting off with the New Mexico franchise was a big undertaking and then to have the opportunity to join this college in the middle of the season that I couldn’t say no to and I’m glad that I made that decision,” Graziano said in late January.

“When we started talking, they explained the scenario that they had a goalie that got hurt and we need to bring a guy in at the halfway point and right now you’re that guy. They came out to see me play and came to the perfect game because I had a 50-save shutout. Then I went n my visit and really liked what the school had to offer and was happy to join.”

The 6’3”, 201lb. Williamsville native has played in four games this season with the Statesmen. His first collegiate appearance came over the last 7:33 of Union’s 5-0 loss at Yale.

In his second appearance against Harvard, he allowed a goal during a five-on-three power play, but the coaches were impressed with his resolve after that.

“I like how he responded from it, Union head coach Rick Bennett said. “I thought he did an excellent job of competing after it instead of getting down. I thought he did a really good job of competing.”

“I think any time there is an opportunity to come into a game; maybe it’s not the best opportunity, but for me I try to look at it like I have nothing to lose to go out there and do the best I can,” Graziano said.

He made his first start Feb.1 against Dartmouth and earned his first win allowing three goals on 19 shots in the 4-3 victory.

The Union coaching staff seems to be easing him into the pace and speed of Division I hockey as the team won just seven of their first 30 games this season and will be on the road for the first round of the ECAC playoffs and look to see what they have heading into the offseason and planning for 2020-21.

Graziano is taking the greyhound bus hockey career tour he took to get to Schenectady all in stride and jokes about all the team colors and equipment he has donned, but sees every stop as a building block.

“I should be renting it month by month at this point. I like to joke that in my two-and-a-half-year junior career I got to travel North America. But ultimately every place I was able to play added a different element to my game that I’m happy to have and to go through that adversity like I did last year getting traded twice moving around between teams and leagues.

“Having to go through all that and having the success personally this year I’ve been really happy and that Union is a place that I can spend the next three-and-a-half years and grow here.”
