HANOVER, N.H. – Three players recorded multiple assists and sophomore Owen Savory made 37 saves to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Dartmouth College, on Saturday night at Thompson Arena. With the win, the Engineers improve to 17-15-2 overall (13-8-1 ECAC Hockey) and clinch the fourth seed and a bye in the ECAC Hockey Playoffs. The Big Green drop to 13-12-4 on the season (10-10-2 ECAC Hockey).

After a scoreless first period that included a total of 12 shots, RPI exploded for three goals in the second period to open up a 3-0 lead.

Senior Patrick Polino got things started with a rocket from the blue line at 9:33 of the frame. Taking a feed from freshman Cory Babichuk, Polino stepped up and buried his 11th goal of the season. A secondary helper went to classmate Will Reilly.

RPI doubled the lead at 14:00 even, when freshman Tristan Ashbrook converted a on a 2-on-1 rush with Reilly. Babichuk got the play started, sending the puck up the Reilly, who skated up the right side. He sent a low shot off the right pad of Dartmouth senior goaltender Adrian Clark that caromed right to Ashbrook for the tap-in – his ninth goal of the season.

Senior Todd Burgess then made it 3-0 just 28 seconds later, corralling his own rebound after taking a backhand feed from sophomore defenseman Kyle Hallbauer and netted an acrobatic goal for his team-leading 14th of the season. Sophomore Ture Linden picked up the first of his two assist on the night.

Dartmouth got on the board at 18:57 of the second, when Drew O’Connor potted number 21 on the season, from Daniel Warpecha and Brock Paul.

A back-and-forth saw the Engineers kill off an early penalty, before the Big Green lifted Clark for an extra skater with over five minutes to play.

Senior Jake Marrello capitalized by netting his seventh goal of the year 15:35, with the lone assist going to Linden, giving him eight in the last six games.

Savory (13-9-2) had eight stops in the first period, 16 in the second and 13 in the third. Clark (13-11-4) turned away 23 in the contest, including 12 in the second period, before giving way to Dean Shatzer over the final 2:13 of the contest.

RPI finished 0 for 5 on the man advantage, while Dartmouth was 0 for 6. The Engineers’ four-game winning streak is its first since the 2012-13 season – the last time they earned a first round bye, finishing second in the league.

The Engineers are idle until March 13-15, when they host an ECAC Hockey Quarterfinal series at the Houston Field House. Dartmouth welcomes Princeton to town for a best-of-three series next weekend.

ROCHESTER, N.Y.-William Smith College sophomore goalie Amanda Aalto made a career-high 50 saves and first-year Julianna Gong had three points as the Herons defeated Nazareth 3-1 in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference quarterfinal at Bill Gray’s IcePlex this afternoon. With the win, William Smith is 18-8-0 this season. The 18 wins match the Herons’ single-season record.

Gong scored twice and had an assist for William Smith. Fellow first-year Mia LaPlante added a goal and an assist in the victory.

Mikaila Rubin scored for the Golden Flyers (18-5-3). Adrianna Brehm made 18 saves in just under 59 minutes of work.

Gong opened the scoring at the 10:28 mark of the first period. She one-timed a crossing pass from LaPlante past Brehm for her 14th goal of the season. Four minutes later, Gong returned the favor, setting up LaPlante’s 11th goal of the season. LaPlante wristed a shot from the slot into the back of the net.

Makenna Wiljanen had Nazareth’s best scoring chance of the first period. She blasted a shot from the point through traffic, but Aalto made the save.

Nazareth came out of the first intermission and took control of the game, outshooting William Smith 21-4 in the second period. At the 1:15 mark of the period, Rubin made it a one-goal game with her second goal of the season. She snapped a shot from the right faceoff circle past Aalto. Nikolle Van Stralen and Stephanie Kubis were credited with assists on the goal. The Golden Flyers pressed for the equalizer but were unable to sneak a shot past Aalto. Jessica Kolberg fired a shot from the point off the left goal post. With five minutes left in the period, Hailey Redders had a shot stopped by Aalto’s right leg pad.

The Golden Flyers continued to apply pressure in the offensive zone in the third period, but Aalto was up to the task, stopping all 18 shots she faced in the frame. Just over a minute into the period, Abbey Luth wristed a shot on cage that was gloved by Aalto. With 1:23 left in regulation, Nazareth lifted Brehm in favor of the extra attacker. The Golden Flyers could only muster one shot with the extra skater.

Gong iced the game for William Smith with an empty net goal with 15 seconds remaining in regulation. Her clearing attempt trickled the length of the rink into the vacant cage. It was her 15th goal of the season.

Nazareth finished the game with a 51-21 edge in shots on goal. The Golden Flyers were 0-5 on the power play and the Herons were 0-2 with the extra attacker.

This is the second straight year that William Smith has ended Nazareth’s season in the UCHC tournament after the Golden Flyers took the regular season series.

The Herons will be back in action next weekend, March 7-8, for the semifinal round of the UCHC tournament. Location and time of game was not known at the time of publication.

CORNELL CLINCHES THIRD STRAIGHT CLEARY CUP

By Warren Kozireski —

Seventh ranked Clarkson traveled to second ranked Cornell Saturday night, but the Big Red one night earlier clinched the regular season ECAC title with a 5-0 shutout of St. Lawrence while the Golden Knights needed a late goal to tie Colgate 1-1.

Cornell freshman Ben Berard netted his first collegiate hat trick—two on the power play—one night after being a healthy scratch to lead them to a 5-1 win.

“It feels pretty good; I was excited to be back in the line-up,” Berard said. “After being out of the line-up you always want to come back and have a good game. Coach knew I had two (goals), so he told me to go stand in front of the net and try to bang one in and it worked out.”

Junior goaltender Matthew Galajda entered the contest with 197:27 consecutive minutes of shutout hockey, but that ended at 5:25 of the first for 202:50—the sixth longest in Cornell history.

The team honored seniors Jeff Malott, Yanni Kaldis and Noah Bauld after the game.

The three straight Cleary Cups is also a program first and they become the first ECAC school to accomplish it since Harvard in 1992- 1993, 1994.

“It’s been a hard year; we worked 352 days to get to where we were last year and now the real fun begins with the playoffs and everyone is looking forward to that opportunity,” Cornell head coach Mike Schafer said.

The Big Red earn a week off with the first-round bye and will host the lowest remaining seed after the first round the weekend of March 13-15.

Victor Wins Class A Title In OT

0

By Warren Kozireski —

Cal Lambert scored five minutes into the first overtime period as Victor came two goals down twice and defeated Fairport 5-4 in the Class A Section V hockey final.
Fairport opened a 2-0 lead in the first period on even strength goals by Caleb Kaiser and Mitchell Zanon five minutes apart.
Victor got on the board with a power play marker by Alex Parton on a backhand off a rebound with assists to Sam Bresson and Jack McCandless at 4:54.
But Fairport regained their two-goal advantage at 10:08 of the second as Travis Knicley roofed his shot from the faceoff circle after a pass by Kaiser.
The Blue Devils pulled to within one again before the period was over as Nick Peluso found a loose puck in the slot from a Bresson shot and scored at 11:53.
In a wild third period, Victor tied the game 3-3 on a power play goal by McCandless after a perfect cross-crease pass from Parton at 5:59.
Fairport regained their one-goal lead with a power play goal of their own at 7:44 on defenseman Nick Krug’s wrister shot from the point that had eyes.
But the Blue Devils continued to pressure and Steven Armstrong retied the game 4-4 as he pounced on a rebound in the slot. Victor survived a Fairport power play over the final 90 seconds of regulation to send the game into overtime.
Victor had an overtime power play and had one chance dribble just wide of the net before Fairport failed to convert a two-on-one shorthanded break before Cal Lambert found a loose puck at the side of the Fairport net after a goal-mouth scramble and knocked it in for the game-winner with assist from Armstrong and Colin McNamara.
“I saw it on the goal-line and I was able to put it in,” Lambert said. “Probably one of the craziest games that I’ve been a part of; just having faith in my teammates going into the locker room down 2-0, but knowing that we were going to win the game and not having any doubt in our mind.
“When you trust your teammates, you know the puck is going to end up in the back of the net.”
“It’s all a blur after that puck went in the net,” Armstrong said.
Victor advances to the State Regional round where they will play the Section III winner of Syracuse City versus West Genesee on Sat. March 7 at 5pm at RIT.

Webster-Thomas Wins Seventh Section V Hockey Title

BY WARREN KOZIRESKI —

Webster-Thomas spotted Canandaigua a 2-0 first period lead before scoring once in the second and three more times in the third period to win their second consecutive and seventh overall Section V Class B hockey championship 4-2.
Canandaigua senior Carter McWilliams scored on a wrister from just inside the blueline that he put just under the crossbar 3:46 into the contest and Lucas Schwartz followed 78 seconds later with a goal on an assist from Dominick Spychalski to stake the Braves to a 2-0 lead on just three first period shots.
“It was a rough moment, but we knew it was coming and we were just ready to go back in the second and third stronger than ever,” sophomore Liam Forsyth said.
Thomas closed to within one with a power play goal by Forsyth, who put his wrist shot from the right faceoff circle over the left shoulder of the goaltender at 8:03 of the second period.
“Everyone was screaming to shoot and I saw that corner and it went in lucky enough,” Forsythe said. “We just needed to get one through him and then we were just going to pepper him left and right.”
The Titans converted another power play to tie the game at 5:30 of the third period as Cullen Hennessy chipped the puck over the keeper from the side of the net with an assist from Zack Wolfe.
Thomas then scored twice 46 seconds apart to take the lead for good.
Brandon Gierczak scored what would prove to be the game-winner on a slapshot from the faceoff circle at 7:28 before Jack Stappenbeck knocked in the rebound from his own shot at 8:14 with an assist from Forsyth.
“It’s incredible; there is no other feeling like it,” Most Valuable Player Gierczak said. “It was a little frustrating and it was kind of quiet for a little bit (in the first period locker room), but we just started talking and said we just had to keep it going and we knew that eventually we would pop a couple in and it happened.”
“Winning at any level…is fun and team spots are great because it’s bringing a bunch of people together for a common goal,” Webster-Thomas head coach David Evans said. “This is one of our accomplishments and we want to continue to move forward as we progress to Regionals. It’s hard to win one, but when you try to win it back-to-back everyone is gunning for you. We got some bounces and some timely plays, so we’re thankful that we’re moving on.”
Thomas will play the winner of the Section X final between Ogdensburg and Norwood/Norfolk in the state regional round Sat. March 7 at 3pm at RIT.
