Beauts Re-Sign Taylor Accursi

0

BROOKLYN – In the first move to build their roster for 2020-21, the Buffalo Beauts have re-signed Taylor Accursi, the club’s leading scorer this past season.

“Buffalo and the Beauts have been really good to me for the past three years, so it made sense to come back and have fun playing in a great league, surrounded by outstanding players, teammates and especially our fans,” said Accursi. “Having the opportunity to once again represent something so much bigger than myself made it an easy decision to return to the NWHL and continue the growth of women’s hockey.”

Accursi scored 16 goals and added 9 assists for 25 points in 24 regular season games in 2019-20. Her 16 goals were tied for fourth in the NWHL. Her four-goal game in the Labatt Blue NWHL Buffalo Believes Classic outdoor game against the Riveters highlighted a season in which she had two separate five-game point streaks. For her outstanding play, Accursi was honored with her first selection to play in the NWHL All-Star Game.

With 26 goals, 16 assists and 42 points in her career, Accursi is tied with Corinne Buie and Kourtney Kunichika for most points in Beauts history. Accursi first burst onto the NWHL scene three years ago with five goals in her first three games. She led the league in power play goals in 2017-18.

The Ancaster, Ontario native played collegiately at Mercyhurst from 2013-2017. As a senior, she scored 9 goals, finished second on the team in scoring that year with 23 points and led the Lakers with a +13.

Eichel To Donate Protective Masks To Local Hospitals

0

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo Sabres forward Jack Eichel has purchased 5,000 personal protective equipment (PPE) masks from hockey equipment manufacturer Bauer that will be distributed to various hospitals throughout Western New York.

“I am so thankful to all those medical professionals that are on the front lines taking care of our community in the battle against this virus,” Eichel said. “The dedication to Western New York that they continue to show is incredible. I am happy to work with my friends at Bauer to purchase these masks. Hopefully, they will help play a part in keeping our hospital workers safer and healthier.”

“We’re all on the same team in helping our medical professionals get the necessary protective equipment they need to help in the fight against COVID-19,” said Mary-Kay Messier, VP of Global Marketing, Bauer Hockey. “Nurses, doctors and so many others are risking their own health to save the lives of others. These are the true heroes of coronavirus. Our team was eager to step up and do what we can, just like Jack is stepping up to help his community in Buffalo. We’re grateful for this partnership with Jack and the Buffalo Sabres, and we hope others continue to help because we all need to support our families, friends and neighbors right now.”

Bauer Hockey and Cascade Lacrosse, both owned by Peak Achievement Athletics, switched from manufacturing sports equipment to producing medical facemasks at the Bauer Innovation Center in Blainville, Quebec, and the Cascade facility in Liverpool, New York. After receiving more requests for products than production could support, the companies made the medical mask design and supplier information available to the public to encourage other manufacturing companies to support production.

NHL & NHLPA To Provide Families Free OnLine Access To Future Goals Program

Online educational hockey-themed resource focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills now available to parents.

NEW YORK / TORONTO – The National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) and the National Hockey League (NHL), who both remain committed to supporting their fans and families during this ever-changing and difficult time, will now be providing free remote access to Hockey ScholarTM — the hockey-themed STEM curriculum for elementary and middle-school-aged students, powered by EVERFI and part of the NHL & NHLPA Future Goals™ Program.

For the first time since its launch in 2014, the Hockey Scholar program, which consists of 12 learning modules, will be available for both teachers and parents to access. Up until now, the program has only been available through educational institutions and educators. Amid school closures, many parents are challenged with educating their children while they’re away from the classroom and this expanded access to the Hockey Scholar program provides families with educational resources to support them.

Along with increased online access to Future Goals educational resources, a few select players from around the NHL will be playing a role in helping teachers, parents, and students connect and interact with the online Future Goals materials.

Students who complete the Future Goals – Hockey Scholar program will not only gain an understanding of foundational STEM concepts; they’ll also be introduced to careers in hockey related to STEM. The NHL, NHLPA and EVERFI understand that hockey has always been more than a game – it’s a community built around sport and these online tools will allow families to remain connected to the hockey community during this unprecedented time.

Examples of activities within the Future Goals – Hockey Scholar program include:

Exploring the engineering behind equipment such as skates, sticks, and goalie pads.

Calculating the surface area and volume of the ice.

Reviewing the different states of matter (solid, liquid, and gas).

Analysis of geometric constructions and how angles are a key component of the game.

Examination of mass, velocity, and kinetic energy premised on player speed and game dynamics.

Since 2014, over 3.1 million students have participated in the Future Goals program accounting for more than 6.5 million hours of learning. Students who participated in the program saw their STEM skills increase by 82 percent while 93 percent of teachers who incorporated it into their students’ coursework said they would recommend the program to fellow teachers.

Families looking for more information on the Future Goals Hockey Scholar program, including how to enroll, can access these details by visiting nhl.com/futuregoals. Families can also follow and join the conversation on social media by searching #HockeyAtHome and #HockeyScholar.

ECHL & Hockey World Mourn The Passing of ECHL Co-Founder Henry Brabham

0

The ECHL and its member teams mourn the loss and express their condolences to the family and friends of League co-founder, and 2008 ECHL Hall of Fame inductee Henry Brabham, who passed away at the age of 90.

“On behalf of June and myself, we extend our deepest condolences to Henry’s wife, Sarah, and his family, as we spent countless hours together working to build the ECHL,” said Commissioner Emeritus, Patrick J. Kelly.  “His vision to form this League has helped advance a lot of people’s careers in professional hockey and he will deeply missed.”

In the summer of 1988, Brabham, along with Bill Coffey, traveled up and down the east coast in search of cities and arenas to host teams for the inaugural season of the ECHL in 1988-89. The League’s first season featured five teams, three of which were owned by Brabham, including the legendary Johnstown Chiefs, who were the last original ECHL team to play in their original city. The dedication of the Virginia businessman was crucial to the league surviving to span from coast-to-coast while advancing more than 670 players and countless coaches, on-ice officials and front office personnel to the National Hockey League.

“There is no question in my mind, that without Henry Brabham, there is no ECHL,” said ECHL Commissioner Ryan Crelin. “It is a tremendously sad day for the League as we lose one of our founding members, but this is also an opportunity to be thankful for his commitment to the sport of hockey and his willingness to create the foundation for what the ECHL has become.”

To honor his dedication and foresight in founding the League, the ECHL regular-season championship trophy, the Henry Brabham Cup, is named in his honor.

Brabham was part of the inaugural inductee class into the ECHL Hall of Fame in 2008, along with Patrick J. Kelly, Chris Valicevic and Nick Vitucci.

Trio Named To All-USCHO DIII Teams

0

UTICA, NY – Three members of the Utica College men’s ice hockey team have added yet another set of national honors as part of a busy week of awards. Junior forward Conor Landrigan (New Tripoli, PA/Binghamton Jr. Sens (NAHL)), senior defenseman Daniel Fritz (Harwood, MD/Canisius College (Atlantic Hockey)), and senior goaltender Gianluca Baggetta (Maple, Ontario/North York (OJHL)) have been selected to US College Hockey Online’s All-USCHO Division III teams for the 2019-20 season. The honors were released by the national website based in Minneapolis.

The All-USCHO teams are USCHO’s version of an All-America team, as selected by the website’s staff. All three players are part of the All-USCHO teams for the first time. Landrigan and Fritz were selected to the first team, while Baggetta was an honorable mention pick. The trio led Utica to a program record 25 wins, the UCHC regular season title, and the UCHC tournament title. They were scheduled to play an NCAA Quarterfinal game last Saturday before the cancellation of the tournament.

Landrigan earns the nod after a positively brilliant junior season where he was named the UCHC Co-Player of the Year. He was third in the nation at 1.86 points per game, which stands as a new school record, and did it in just 22 games after missing a lengthy stretch in the first half of the season due to injury. The junior had 41 points on 13 goals and 28 assists. He was 24th in the nation in goals per game(0.59), and finished the year third in assists per game (1.27). Landrigan had the sixth best season in school history in terms of total points, and was three assists away from setting a new single season record at UC.

The Pioneers were 21-0-1 with Landrigan in the lineup this season, and the junior forward went on to record a point in 21 of the 22 games he played. He has an active sixteen game point streak. Landrigan is also a finalist for the Sid Watson National Player of the Year award.

Fritz joins Landrigan on the first team after previously earning UCHC Defensive Player of the Year and All-UCHC First Team honors. The highest scoring defenseman in the nation averaged 1.34 points per game. His points per game average ranked 26th nationally among all skaters. He was third on the squad with 29 points this season, and racked up 11 goals and 28 assists. He was thirteenth nationally with an average of 0.97 assists per game, and ranked ninth in the country with eight power play goals. He led Utica to the sixth best scoring defense mark nationally at just 1.97 goals allowed per game.

Fritz finishes his career tied for the most points ever by a Utica defenseman. In just three seasons, he had 82 points on 20 goals and 62 assists to stand alongside former teammate and 2018 All-American Dalton Carter (Toledo, OH/Northern Cyclones (EHL)) at the top of the college’s career list for points by a blue liner. He has the most career assists of any defenseman to ever play at Utica, and the best points-per-game average of any rearguard to ever wear the blue and orange.

Baggetta joins the fold with his first All-USCHO honor after backstopping Utica through much of its active 20 game winning streak that included an undefeated postseason. The second team All-UCHC pick had the best winning percentage in all of NCAA men’s ice hockey at 90.9 percent, which is also the best winning percentage ever recorded by a Utica starter. The graduate student had a 19-1-2 overall record this season to tie UC’s single season record for goaltending wins, and he was eighteenth in the nation with a goals allowed average of 2.05. He had a save percentage of 92.1 percent.

Baggetta finishes his career with 41 career victories, and seven career shutouts. He is third in career wins, and tied for the lead in career shutouts alongside assistant coach Adam Dekker. With his career finalized, he has set new program standards for career save percentage (93.0 percent), and career goals allowed average (1.87). He was the 2018-19 UCHC Goaltender of the Year and is a two-time All-Conference pick.

Landrigan & Fritz Earn All-American Honors

0

UTICA, NY – Two members of the Utica College men’s ice hockey team can now officially add the title of All-American to their long list of accolades. Junior forward Conor Landrigan (New Tripoli, PA/Binghamton Jr. Sens (NAHL)) and senior defenseman Daniel Fritz (Harwood, MD/Canisius College (Atlantic Hockey)) have been chosen to the 2019-20 American Hockey Coaches’ Association/CCM Division III All-America Teams. The prestigious awards were announced by the national association representing hockey coaches at all levels.

Fritz was chosen to the East region first team, and becomes the second Utica defenseman to ever earn All-America honors. Landrigan is the first player in program history to be named an All-American as a junior, as he reached the East region second team. The pair are the seventh and eighth All-Americans in program history, joining Jimmy Sokol, Tim Coffman, Trever Hertz, Louis Educate, Dalton Carter (Toledo, OH/Northern Cyclones (EHL)), and Roman Ammirato (Williamstown, NJ/Union College (ECAC)).

The team compiled a historic season with Fritz and Landrigan leading the way. Utica climbed up to a third place ranking in the USCHO Poll, and the top spot in the NCAA Pairwise rankings by the end of the season. The team won a school-record 25 games, and capped the year on a program-best 20 game winning streak on their way to the UCHC regular season and tournament titles. The 20 game streak was the longest in NCAA men’s hockey this season. They were scheduled to play their first NCAA tournament game since 2013 after earning the top overall seed.

Fritz finishes off his college career with first team honors after previously earning UCHC Defensive Player of the Year and All-USCHO first team honors. The highest scoring defenseman in the nation set the pace with an average of 1.34 points per game. His points per game average ranked 26th nationally among all skaters. He was third on the squad with 29 points this season, and racked up 11 goals and 28 assists. He was thirteenth in the country with an average of 0.97 assists per game, and ranked ninth in the nation with eight power play goals. He led Utica to the sixth best scoring defense mark nationally at just 1.97 goals allowed per game. He finishes his career tied for the most points ever by a Utica defenseman. In just three seasons, he had 82 points on 20 goals and 62 assists to stand alongside former teammate and 2018 All-American Dalton Carter (Toledo, OH/Northern Cyclones (EHL)) at the top of the college’s career list for points by a blue liner. He has the most career assists and the highest points per game average of any defenseman to ever play for UC.

Landrigan earns second team honors after an excellent year where he was named the UCHC Co-Player of the Year and an All-USCHO first team selection. The junior was third in the nation at 1.86 points per game, which stands as a new school record. The junior had 41 points on 13 goals and 28 assists in just 22 appearances. He was 24th in the nation in goals per game(0.59), and finished the year third in assists per game (1.27). Landrigan had the sixth best season in school history in terms of total points, and was three assists away from setting a new single season record at Utica. The Pioneers were 21-0-1 with Landrigan in the lineup this season, and the junior forward went on to record a point in 21 of the 22 games he played. He was also on the short list of finalists for the Sid Watson National Player of the Year award.

Fritz is one of four seniors on this year’s squad. That group combined their efforts to never finish lower than first in the UCHC or ECAC West standings during their four year career, and the quartet were also responsible for helping Utica to four straight conference final appearances and two tournament crowns. Landrigan returns along with the majority of this year’s roster for a promising 2020-21 season.

CORTLAND, N.Y.—The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announced its top honors for men’s hockey and a pair of Bengals claimed awards as Nikita Kozyrev (Tallinn, Estonia) was tabbed Rookie of the Year and Emil Norrman (Kungsbacka, Sweden) garnered Co-Goalie of the Year honors.

Kozyrev, a freshman forward from Estonia majoring in business, led the Bengals in scoring with 32 points on nine goals and 23 assists in 26 games, including 24 points (five goals and 19 assists) in 16 conference games. His 32 points ranks tied for third in the nation among all freshmen, and is the most points in a single season by any Bengal player since 2008-09.

He finished fourth in the league with a 2.30 goals against average and won six games including a 31-save shutout victory over Brockport.

Norrman is the third Bengal to earn Goalie of the Year honors in the past four seasons, joining Ian Sylves and Mike DeLavergne.

Buffalo State finished the season 12-12-2 overall and qualified for the SUNYAC playoffs for the 10th-consecutive season.
